Bizarre activities, most of which took place in Florida
« on: July 28, 2015, 02:31:00 PM »
If you've lived in The Sunshine State you have undoubtedly seen a lot of bizarre activities on the local news. I'll never forget the fellow who died after winning a cockroach eating contest at a local business (I did not make this up).

Here is an example from a thread I created a few weeks ago:

http://www.russianwomendiscussion.com/index.php?topic=19854.0

I can hardly go a week without seeing some Florida incident in the news. The website "The Smoking Gun", which captures bizarre arrests, even has a tag for arrests in Florida. Here is the most recent story:

Quote
Cops: Man Battered Female Relative Over "The Way She Was Cooking Hard Boiled Eggs"

A Florida man is facing a felony charge after allegedly battering a female relative because he “did not agree with the way she was cooking hard boiled eggs,” police report.

Cory Lee Shinkman, 23, was collared last week following a confrontation in the St. Petersburg home he shares with the victim and other family members ...

http://thesmokinggun.com/buster/florida/man-battered-female-relative-over-hard-boiled-eggs-908731

Mr. Shinkman was taken to the Pinellas County jail, which I think is the same jail that the guy in the thread above who attacked the UW on the beach was taken to.  You might be surprised to learn that he has been arrested for battery previously.

I have heard about many causes of violent arguments but this is the first time I've read about one that began over the method of hard-boiling eggs.

Mr. Shinkman is probably a gourmand and has strong feelings about his preferred egg cooking technique. In culinary circles there is some disagreement over the best method. One of the principal areas of disagreement pits those who advocate starting the eggs in cold water and bringing them to a boil with those who advocate starting the eggs in already-simmering water.

If you're interested in this you can read more at this link:

http://www.seriouseats.com/2014/05/the-secrets-to-peeling-hard-boiled-eggs.html

Here is another story from The Sunshine State:

http://thesmokinggun.com/buster/assault/man-busted-for-urinating-on-pregnant-girlfriend-890732

And another story about an unusual domestic disturbance that illustrates why you should tag all your items of personal property with your name so that there won't be any arguments about who they belong to if you split with your significant other:

Not very bizarre but pretty damn cool. Sunken Spanish ship with over one million dollars in gold found. One of twelve ships that were sunk in the voyage when hit by a hurricane. And this is why it's called the Gold Coast. Found in only 15 feet of water right offshore.

That's why we keep all the really bad eggs in the Florida basket.

P.S. - It makes no difference, either cold or boiling water.  The determining factor is how long the eggs have remained at room temperature prior to boiling, or, even, how old they are since they were first laid.

Here is a news story about the guy who died after winning the cockroach eating contest:

Quote
A man who collapsed after winning a cockroach-eating contest last month at a Florida pet store choked to death, according to a Broward County Medical Examiner report released Monday.

Edward Archbold, 32, of West Palm Beach, and several other contestants signed up to eat a variety of insects at Ben Siegel Reptiles in Deerfield Beach on Oct. 6. After eating dozens of giant cockroaches, Archbold was declared the winner of an ivory-ball python.

Earlier in the night, he had also entered a superworm-eating contest ...

. . . how old they are since they were first laid.

And one might wonder how this would apply to you also.

Let me get this straight - you win a contest by munching untold giant cockroaches, and your prize is a snake??????  Why not something useful - like  :usd: for instance?

1. That is correct.

2. It's SouthEast Florida. ;D  If anyone wants to learn more about the region read Tom Wolfe's novel, "Back To Blood". For light beach reading read any of the novels by Carl Hiassen set in SouthEast Florida. You might think Hiassen has an amazing imagination but a lot of the bizarre incidents in his novels are based on things that really happened there.

I always wonder about these stories.  People finding treasure?  Finding old signed copies of the Declaration of Independence?  Rare artifacts from the middle ages thought lost?

I had a buddy years ago who swore this stuff was off the books payoffs to spies.  He swore this stuff was taken from the national archives and the "discoveries" were just planted items to explain the new found riches and basically launder the cash.

Oddly he died in a fiery car crash late at night with no witnesses.  Coincidence?  Probably so.  But, food for thought.  I am not a big conspiracy theory guy, but things like that do excite the imagination.

This one looks pretty legit. Quite a few ships and planes sunk off the coast of Florida. There are still 11 more out there just from this fleet. You want a treasure story that makes your mind spin with conspiracy theories lookup the Father Crespi story.

Mag Lev Trains from Los Angeles to San Francisco;

I've been on the Maglev from Shanghai Airport (Pudong) into the city, during the period when there are no speed restrictions.  Even that short a trip is enough to leave you breathless.  :whew:

This story isn't from Florida. It's from Ohio:

Quote
Phyllis Jefferson Stabbed Boyfriend In Groin For Eating All Her Salsa

Phyllis Jefferson's temper may be as hot as her salsa.

Police in Akron, Ohio, said Jefferson, 50, allegedly stabbed her boyfriend in the groin with a pen Sunday evening after he ate all the salsa in their house, Cleveland.com reports.

Jefferson's boyfriend, Ronnie D. Bucker, 61, told police that he and the accused were arguing about the salsa consumption when she allegedly stabbed him with the pen.

The suspect then walked over to the TV and threatened to knock it on the floor, according to Ohio.com.

When Buckner grabbed the TV, Jefferson allegedly walked to the kitchen to grab a knife and used it to cut him in the stomach.

Jefferson fled the scene while Buckner called 911. Responding officers found him on the floor clutching his stomach, Fox8.com reports
.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2015/03/30/phyllis-jefferson-stabbed_n_6972648.html

Salsa has been more popular than ketchup in the US for more than two decades.

This story is from Florida though:

Quote
Flatulence leads to knife fight, arrest

It started when he farted.

An Immokalee woman who is accused of throwing a kitchen knife at her longtime boyfriend told detectives she became angry when he passed gas in her face while they were watching TV Tuesday night, according to an arrest report.

Deborah Ann Burns, 37, said when she confronted her 53-year-old boyfriend about the flatulence he told her to "shut up." The two began arguing and at some point ended up in the kitchen, deputies reported.

The boyfriend was later found outside the home on the 400 block of Gaunt Street with a small knife wound to his stomach, reports stated
.

http://www.naplesnews.com/tablet-showcase/courts-and-crime/fart-face-leads-knife-fight

There are more details at the links.

Both of these couples have a larger than usual age gap. The couple in the first story has an 11 year age gap and the couple in the second story has a 16 year age gap.

It would probably be OK to pass gas if the age gap were less.

Cops: Woman, 40, Battered Live-In Beau During Beef Over How To Properly Fry Chicken

Meet Bahunti Williams.

According to cops, the Florida woman battered her live-in boyfriend during an argument over how she was frying chicken.

Williams, 40, and Christopher Waters were in their Bradenton apartment Sunday evening when the fried chicken dispute turned violent. Seen above, Williams “punched the victim with a closed fist over the left eye causing the skin to split open,” police reported. She also allegedly scratched Waters’s chest.

When cops arrived at the couple’s residence, Waters--who has been with Williams for nine years--said that he did not want to press charges.

Williams was busted for misdemeanor domestic battery and booked into the Manatee County jail, from which she was released yesterday. Williams’s rap sheet includes two prior domestic battery arrests, though neither resulted in a conviction
.

http://thesmokinggun.com/buster/battery/fried-chicken-battery-098731

Once again the police report doesn't say just what the argument was about. As a longtime fan of fried chicken I'm curious about this.

Here's another domestic fight over eggs:

Quote
Woman Arrested For Battering Live-In Boyfriend With Bowl Of Eggs Following Breakfast Beef

A dispute over the preparation of breakfast ended yesterday morning with a Florida woman under arrest for battering her live-in boyfriend with a bowl of raw eggs, police report.

Destini Oliver, 22, and Lorenzo Dixon, 23, quarreled Sunday in their Palmetto home over Oliver not wanting to cook breakfast, according to a police report.

The dispute turned physical when Oliver, seen above, allegedly “threw a bowl of raw eggs” at Dixon, striking him in the back
.

http://thesmokinggun.com/buster/eggs/woman-arrested-for-egg-battery-786592

Hmmm, a lot of these stories involve arguments over food. I'll bet that food arguments are the number three cause of domestic battery, after sex/cheating and money.

This one at any rate:

Quote
police in Tallahassee, Florida received a 911 call from a Dollar General store reporting that a “black male juvenile” was “destroying” the business.

When officers arrived at the Crawfordville Road store, the suspect was being detained outside the front entrance. Inside, evidence of the boy’s rampage was strewn across the convenience store’s aisles.

For unknown reasons, the child--who did not appear to be in the company of an adult--spent several minutes knocking over displays and pushing merchandise off store shelves. The vandalism ended when the boy was accosted by a young man who pulled him out of the store and held the child until police arrived.

A 3:29 video of the Dollar General vandalism was posted early yesterday to Facebook by a male shopper who recorded part of the boy’s outburst (and who had items thrown at him by the juvenile).

On the video, seen above, the customer provides a profane play-by-play of the destruction, and repeatedly refers to the boy as a “jit,” street slang for an out-of-control youth. “Jit is going ham in dollar store. Believe that,” the man said at one point. “He need his ass whooped,” the narrator later added.

The video can be seen here. You might be surprised at how young he looks.

Not at all. I had a 10 and 13 year attempt to steal my car the other day. We had to run them down and hold them for the police. When the cops showed up they knew them by name. The 13 year old had a record of 23 arrests for crimes such as purse snatching, home burglary, theft and four stolen cars.
