Russian Visits Down ?
« on: September 28, 2009, 09:44:59 AM »
I am wondering if fewer Americans are going to Russia. I just learned that the American Airlines non-stop flights Chicago Moscow will be cancelled beginning Oct. 1. I also notice that Delta no longer has a direct flight from Atlanta. Same for Aeroflot out of Miami and San Francisco.

Maybe the visa requirements and hotel prices are catching up to them ?

I talked to a Delta Rep a couple of months ago and she told me that all flights to Moscow were going through JFK, and that the flights from Atlanta would resume for a few months starting in Feb/March timeframe.  This was mainly due to lack of folks flying out of Atlanta (which being in Texas was easier and convenient for me)

Back in June I flew Delta direct from JFK to Kiev. Those flights were cancelled until "some time late next year". This time, leaving in a few days, I had to take a one stop through Paris. Airliines dont cancel profitable flights.

My wife just got back from Omsk.

She told me that the British Airways flight out of Miami was about 1/3 empty and coming back was almost 1/2 empty.

She was able to stretch out and sleep going and coming back from Moscow in the center isle seats. :)

Marina has learned quickly to grab ANY 3 empty seats on a flight. 8)

Her airlines (S-7) from DME to Omsk and back, was full (no empty seats).

BTW....At the BA counter, 2 International bags were still checked for free, BUT...The clerk said that will be changing soon (1 bag free)?

Viking.....did you know that aerosvit has direct flights out of JFK-Kiev direct? Prices this fall were in $399-$499 range taxes included. Actually my favorite flight is LA-Kiev with stop in Paris, planes with private TV's surely make that 11 hour flight go faster!!! :D

When I booked my flight a few months ago, I checked into every airline and just about every booking site I could find. Those fares did not exist then. Damn. Those are good rates!

Flights from the east coast of the US to DME are pricing out at 650.00 all in right now.

Wow. I went to Russia at the end of August from Atlanta to Moscow and the plane was packed with people. The same was from Moscow to Atlanta.

My flight to Kiev went from Minneapolis to Atlanta, Atlanta to AMsterdam, Amsterdam to Kiev.  First flight packed, 2nd half full, 3rd a couple of handfuls of people.  That was April, so perhaps not a busy time.  Coming back was Kiev to JFK.  Perhaps 2/3 full.

To bad about the Atlanta to Moscow flight.  Much prefer that over JFK.
