Ukrainians in US
« on: February 26, 2020, 11:38:11 PM »
Interesting article on Ukrainian immigrants in the US. Who knew there is over 1 million?

http://www.ukrweekly.com/uwwp/ukrainians-in-the-united-states-have-reached-1-million/

My son worked with a couple of young men from the Ukraine 2  years ago. One was quite homesick, the other had adapted much better. Son said communication with them was sometimes difficult. One knew a fair amount of English, the homesick one knew hardly any. (I think he hadn't been here long)

Great article. Over 60k Ukrainians in my State. With the immigrants from other FSU nations living in my State, the total should easily be over 100k FSU people living here.

The vast majority of that 1 million are either second wave (1920's to pre War) or third wave (after WWII, mostly DPs) immigrants.  Kateryna Yushchenko, for example, is the daughter of third wave immigrants.  Jack Palance was the son of second wave Ukrainian immigrants.

This post was composed without the aid of google.
After the fall of communism, the biggest mistake Boris Yeltsin's regime made was not to disband the KGB altogether. Instead it changed its name to the FSB and, to many observers, morphed into a gangster organisation, eventually headed by master criminal Vladimir Putin. - Gerard Batten

I am the grandchild of first generation immigrants who came after the Odessa Pogrom...

privileged to know at least one of my Ukrainian born grandparents as a child...
meyn bobe, was not like my friend's and neighbor's grandmothers
mine always dressed in black and preferred to speak Yiddish or Russian to me
especially the older she got...

because of the many valuable things she taught me
I am who I am
and if I'm not...
then why do I look like me?

Strange the chart shows approximately 40% more 4th wave Ukrainian males aged 0-4 arriving to America over females. Does that mean parents with very young male children are more likely to leave Ukraine than parents with very young female children?

Wife has noted some concern from discussions with those living in Ukraine about chance that son will be called into military at some point in the future.

I suspect that does account for some of the statistics.

Don't know why our posts were removed from Grumpy's thread but yeah, you're probably right. If I walk into any store or restaurant, It's almost guaranteed there is at least one person from Slavic decent there.

. . . Slavic decent there.

But surely some of them are indecent.
