Vkontakte Founder Flees Russia, Claims Persecution

Pavel Durov, the founder of Russia’s largest social networking website, fled the country on Tuesday, a day after he said he was forced out as the company’s CEO for refusing to share users’ personal data with Russian law enforcement agencies.
Durov, who created Vkontakte seven years ago, first announced his intention to leave the company on April 1 but withdrew his resignation letter two days later. On Monday, he announced that he had been fired and that the social network would now fall under “full control” of Kremlin-linked Rosneft CEO Igor Sechin and Vkontakte billionaire shareholder Alisher Usmanov.

The move to oust Durov is widely seen as part of a wider campaign by the Kremlin to tighten its grip on the Internet, and observers said the authorities aimed to “cleanse” the management of Russian Internet companies in the hopes of gaining control of their content....

“I am out of Russia and have no plans to go back,” Durov said Tuesday in an interview with Techcrunch, a news website focused on technology. He said he intended to launch a mobile social network outside Russia.

“Unfortunately, the country is incompatible with Internet business at the moment,” he said ...

I see a new soviet style Russia on the horizen under the control of Putler. By the time the sheep realize they have no more rights, it will be too late for them to complain about it. Your just deserts. Enjoy it!

If any of you guys are communicating with girls from Vkontakte living in Russia and have something bad to say about Putin, it's best you keep your mouth shut. Otherwise, when you visit the girl in Russia, there may be more than one person waiting for you at the airport.
Fund the audits, spread the word and educate people, write your politicians and other elected officials. Stay active in the fight to save our country. Over 220 generals and admirals say we are in a fight for our survival like no other time since 1776.

After talking to a few married guys here and reading the posts of a number of RW I suggest that guys be extremely circumspect about saying anything at all critical of Putin or Russia.

With journalists getting kidnapped or killed in east Ukraine due to the recent crackdown, it's best the guys who are planning trips to east Ukraine keep their mouths shut too.

Even if the ladies are talking bad about Putin or Russia on the phone, it's best guys change the subject and send her an email telling her agents could be listening and not to engage in that talk anymore. Communists have killed and thrown many people in jail in the past. Why take chances now? It was a smart move for Vkontakte founder to get out of town.

I guess this is why the majority of Russian folks are supporting Putin.

If Russia is engaging in NSA style monitoring, emails won't be any different than a phone call. They'll have it all. It no coincidence that Putin was intently interested in Snowden

Yes, spy agencies can monitor emails but I'm not sure if spy agencies can pick up what is said in emails as easily as phone calls. America and probably Russia have computers that can monitor millions of phone calls at a time. The computers listen to conversations and tries to pick up certain words and combination of words. If someone in Afghanistan called a friend and said the words "Obama", "assassinate", and "bombing" in the same sentence, the computer will lock onto that call and record it, then send it to a human to determine what was the meaning of the conversation. The computer isn't worried about cheating spouses and what the latest the town gossip has to say.

Besides those who want to commit terrorism, Russia finds those who bad mouths Russia and Putin threats. They can't go after everybody but they can go after journalists who have the ability to sway the opinions of many and owners of social networks. The owners of social networks may not be a threat but the people who use the sites can be problematic for those who want to spread propaganda and keep the truth hidden. Instead of going after all those people, it's best to force the owners to make new rules by clamping down on hate talk, in this case hate talk about Russia.

If any guy is communicating with a lady in Russia and east Ukraine who constantly bad mouths Putin and Russia, he has to get her to stop even if he agrees with her point of view. He needs to make it clear that it's not good to talk that way over unsecured lines. If Stalin were living in modern times, he'd record everybody's conversation and send his agents to changed the views of those that disagree. I don't think Putin is as bad as Stalin but disagreeing journalists have died in the past in Russia and there's a recent clamp down on free press in east Ukraine.

When I called my fiancée, now wife, often when she was living in Libya, I never once said anything bad about Ghaddafi over the phone. There are some places in the world no good can come about when talking bad about a country and it's leader.

If you are a nobody it is unlikely that an FSB/FBI agent will show up at your doorstop with a gun and badge if you had been criticising the grand poo-ba on the net or phone. Those organizations don't want too much public exposure as to what they are capable of.

You're right Maxx. Chances are nothing will happen to anybody if they criticize Putin but there is a chance. Also, if a guy opens his mouth the wrong way in front of the wrong people while visiting a lady in east Ukraine, his mouth may get ripped off. The FSB and militia isn't the only thing he has to worry about

For individuals, unlike journalists, they don't face much of a danger now. It's after regime change they face the greatest danger. Stuff like this happens all throughout history. People pay the price after regime change if they're deemed to be aligned on the wrong side of the fence. Have you seen the HBO series "Band of Brothers"? In one scene, Americans won control of an Italian city during WWII and the Italian citizens in the city who favored the alliance, rounded all the people who collaborated with or was friendly with German soldiers and cut off their hair in an attempt to label them so they can be identified and live in shame.

With modern technology, it's even easier to identify which people in east Ukraine are or are not pro Russian. Russia is spying on the phone calls over there not only to get a read if they have significant support from east Ukrainians but to learn who the greatest threats to their operation in east Ukraine are. The calls monitored are most likely documented. For now, Russia will focus on their greatest threats. If Russia ends up getting control of east Ukraine, they can issue out a hit list of people that needs to be re-educated on why Russia is the best choice for them. Leaders like Stalin would definitely do this. People believe more citizens died by Stalin's guns than by Hitler's guns. I don't think Putin will go that far but journalists have paid the price for disagreeing with him. Even after this is over, some people will be on a hit list, a list not as long as Stalin's, but there will be a list. Ask the founder of Vkontakte, who just fled Russia if he thinks he's on a permanent hit list. His crime; refusing to share Vkontakte users personal data with Russian law enforcement.

The anti corruption blogger, Alexei Navalny, in the link below should've gotten out of Russia like the Vkontakte founder when he had the chance. Now he's headed to trial and may win an all expense paid trip to prison. He just happens to be Putin's top critic. Do bloggers who praise Putin ever go to jail? We know Russia doesn't discriminate. ::)

Which voice will be crushed next? St. Petersburg Times? I find it hard to believe that Russians will accept Putin's insane move toward a totalitarian state. This will hurt everyone.
