I have, but over 10 yr ago, about a 2 hr drive west of kyiv
I assume you have a dev there, will she be meeting you at kyiv
or will you go meet her...
"shitomyr" is a gray place, devoid of any human joy...
you would be be much better off staying in kyiv, if possible...
if you are the kind of person who enjoys doing good deeds
there are a couple of orphanages and childrens hospital there
if you are a strong person, go see them...

I've been there, but more than 10 years ago.  It is a pretty city, very typical Ukrainian-Polish style, as historically, it had a strong Polish influence. In pre Revolution times, Zhytomir's university had several world known intellectuals, which is unusual for a city of that size.

I suggest a visit to the Saviour-Transfiguration Cathedral.

shitomyr ghost world

the gray sky rests above
the earth covered in gray snow
the soul of this place is even grayer
what happened here,  that made it this way?
downcast and overcast
why does no one ever smile here?
do you know the reason?

I have spent a fair bit of time in Zhytomir, 5 or so years ago. Katarina . . .

There is an excellent place for coffee opposite a small theater on the road in and out to Kivy, close to the center.

There is a good 'Irish' style café at the end of the main road, close to the government building. I found the city in winter cold and depressing. I felt the city was what was described in 'The Great Divorce'. The hotel that I stayed in was called the Dodo.

About 45 minutes south is another smaller city called Berdichiv. It is interesting a giant Stalin sculpture (I sort of wonder if it is still there). Married in this city was H. de Balzac in the church is St. Barbara, during the Soviet period it was used as a sport gym. Just south is a museum which is the birth place of J. Conrad. Also there is a stunning convent built in the Slavic (Polish) Baroque style. Slowly being restored it is well worth visiting.

Here via Wikipedia is an image of the convent:

Never been there but I disagree with the advice of passing over a girl's home city for Kiev. That is what I have done and its a big mistake. Its right that there is more to do in Kiev but time over again if it was between the attractive city centre of Kiev & girl's gloomy home city I would chose her gloomy home city. Find out all about her in one go, jump that hurdle that needs to be jumped first off rather than it being taken away later on. If you are going to her birthday party you'll get to see her parents most likely and other members of her family & friends, this will be invaluable to having any relationship with her. I would personally take it as a huge gift to be given all this upfront.

I would certainly take flowers and a small inexpensive gift, something she might like, possibly regional to where you live, nothing too tacky either. Her inviting you to her birthday party at such an early stage is something to roll with, whether there is any chemistry there remains to be seen so I wouldn't over egg the situation.

True what Krimster says about Ukraine though, if not been before then her meeting you in Kiev before travelling to her home town is probably a good idea, unless your Russian is real good.

if you're on her home turf, you have the paranoia factor, "what if the neighbors see me, blah, blah..."
plus not a fun time for her, just another day at home, vrs being some place new and more exciting ...

trench

a woman wants to be swept off her feet, you ALWAYS make the grand gesture...

trench,
are you a cynic about love?
did someone break your heart once?
more than once?

Hi Bluesky

'talking to'  ?

Have you video-chatted with her away from the control of some pay by letter site ?

Where are you staying ?  As Krimster says, if you are staying in a smallish regional town and are in an apartment by yourself - not knowing the lingo and your first trip?

I offer you all the down sides as I've 'been there' .

In 2005 I went to Volgograd and stayed close to a lady I had hoped to hit it off with - I didn't know much Russian - but far more than you, I'm guessing and even though V/grad has lots of interesting places to see - there was LOTS of waiting around.

Suggest you download lots of movies  / take DVDs - just in case !

Thank you all Kiev it is.

It will be fun looking forward to it.

My Russian is coming along studying a year now I'm sure it will be better when I get back and I will continue to study daily. It takes years to learn when you do not hear it spoken daily but I'm putting in the work making an effort. I have my own translator who I trust.

Yes it is my first visit Krimster2 and less than 10 years difference in our age.

Yes msmob I have skyped with her thank you for asking.

You never know until you get on the plane and go no matter what website, which social media plateform you meet her on long as you are aware of what has been published on this forum on the negative side of Ukraine, women in Ukraine.

No expectations beyond meeting new people, having fun and celebrating her birthday, meeting up with some other artists there.

Attraction, chemistry is not a choice it is there or it isn't you'll never know via skype, e-mail, chat, viber, what's up, thru a computer screen..face to face in person is the only way to find out for sure.

If it's not there walk away and move forward.

While in Jitomir, visit the Cosmonautics Museum (http://cosmosmuseum.info/). One of the Fathers of Cosmonautics, Korolyov, was born there.

I have been to Jitomir more than once but unfortunately never had time to see it. I was always too busy with customers.
