Now for something just a little bit different!
« on: August 15, 2016, 05:49:21 PM »
Chris Tarrant is a British TV presenter who has made a couple of series of documentaries about some extreme trips, and one of them is his expedition to find the most northerly railway station in the world.  It turns out to be one built by Gazprom, on the extreme northern coast of Siberia.  Here's the story about his trip from Moscow to the edge of the world.

Just a warning for American viewers - some of the humour is distinctly British, and possibly a bit heavy-handed.  :cluebat:  Despite that, persevere to the end - it's an amazing story.

A question for all of you. Instead of a video I get a long vertical black bar. Anybody else see this?
To argue with a man who has renounced the use and authority of reason, and whose philosophy consists in holding humanity in contempt, is like administering medicine to the dead. Thomas Paine - The American Crisis 1776-1783

Yep, I have the vertical bar.  I just thought the posters were from places where weed was legal.   :P

It's a problem with Google Chrome.

I'm getting the same with Chrome and Edge.  Firefox shows a full black square but no video.

Until the chrome problem is fixed, just hit 'Insert Quote' like you are replying to the message and you can see the link.. copy and paste the youtube link into a new browser tab or window and it should work.

I get the vertical bar on civi68's Music Video of the Week thread, and on all the other new threads since I went onto Windows 10.  However, I can see the video itself in my initial post in this thread.  It's very strange!

If you can't see it, but would like to, I would second BC's suggestion.

It seems that videos are now visible again, at least in Opera 39 - which unfortunately adopted the Chromium project in 2013 :( - so they should be visible in Chrome, too.

I am now seeing them as well.  Sandro, I wasn't seeing them in Chrome, Firefox or Edge.

Wonder of wonders - I can now see civi68's music videos again, using Internet Explorer.   Hopefully everyone else's will also now reappear.

Just started to watch the video - Tarrant buys a cup of tea and pays 900 plus roubles [approx 13 usd]   for it ???? !!!

I travelled to Moscow from Sochi and paid 10 times less.May be he was paying for his film crew's teas, too... It's NOT that expensive ...total misrepresentation
Please excuse the Curmudgeon in my posts ..he will be cured by being reunited with his loved one ;)

I watched it when available.  Frozen wasteland.    The destination did not justify the trip.  Nevertheless, it was told in an interesting manner.

I don't believe the narrator is very seasoned, as he said he paid 10 quid for a cup of hot water (the tea bag was free).   He gave the attendant what appeared to be a 500-p note.

He made light of the steerage class car with open sleeping beds (more like hammocks), everyone with their socked feet extended into the aisle as he walked past.  It seemed so bizarre knowing the Russian attitude about feet.

A lot of people died in constructing the railroad, most being political prisoners.

He has done a LOT of these trips, Gator, so he's certainly seasoned.  He also obviously has a very good team of fixers.  He did actually seem quite shocked about the water, but whether or not it was for real, and the attendant was in on the joke, you can't tell.

A lot of people died in constructing the railroad, most being political prisoners.

The east-west route certainly, although not the Gazprom line!  :D
