Here is one of my favorites sources of English language information about Moscow and Russia in general.

http://www.moscowtimes.ru

Daily access should be free. Archives are for charge, however.

An alternative source of information about Russia would be

www.exile.ru

Happy reading!

I, too, was just thinking about this topic yesterday.  I like this site given below because one can focus on the regional and area events as they unfold.  This will give one a better sense of what neighborhood you might be entering.

http://map.rin.ru/index_e.html

Just click on the region or city and news events are given for the area in lower lefthand corner of page.

The State Department also issues advice and warnings to travelers which is quite helpful.

и взыщете Меня и найдете, если взыщете Меня всем сердцем вашим.

The Passport Magazine

http://www.passportmagazine.ru/

is one of my favorites. I have a honor to know the editor in person.

Probably every expat who works or visits Moscow often reads this beautifully made magazine. Is it usually offered free of charge at the airports, hotels, office buildings, etc.

Good choices all, especially the St. Petersburg Times  http://www.sptimes.ru, a paper I consider to be the last independent voice in Russia.. and they don't charge  for digging through the archives.  My guess is since this is an English-Language paper the Powers the Be figure most Russians can't read it..  I use this paper extensively in my English classes.   The editor is a gutsy individual and is not afraid to show Russia as it really is.

While I don't usually recommend blogs, this one http://russophobe.blogspot.com/  is another  pull-no-punches  source of information on what is really going on around here.  Articles about Russia from many different sources along with the opinion of the author (who has no great love for Russia, it must be noted)

Best advice:  Like everything else, get your information from as many different sources as possible and come to your own conclusions.

Whilst owned by Gazprom, (and therefore under Kremlin 'guidance'), this is still a useful news source if one is circumspect about it.

My favourite Russian weather site, with a great list of locations, and up to 11 days forecast.  The best in my opinion.

Forgive Please . Is not Kommersant owned by Boris Beresovsky ?

Olga Privet! actually he sold it in 2005.

Berezovsky sacked Kommersant's director-general, Andrei Vassiliev, and editor-in-chief,Alexander Stukalin, on 14 July 2005 in a move widely seen as preparation for the 2008 Russian presidential elections.

In January 2005 it published blank pages as a protest at a court ruling ordering it to publish a denial of a story about a crisis at Alfa Bank. The sole article in the paper was this one, publish upside down, on the front page. The headline of the article was "Full Plaintiff" (полный истец) which has little meaning, but rhymes with a Russian swear word, meaning "complete disaster" (пиздец).

London-resident Berezovsky sold the Kommersant publishing house to an old friend and business partner, Georgian fruit canner and opposition television station owner Badri Patarkatsishvili, who was already chairman of the Kommersant company's board.
In August 2006, Patarkatsishvili sold his 100% stake in the Kommersant publishing house to Alisher Usmanov, head of Gazprom's Gazprominvestholding subsidiary. Uzbekistan-born Usmanov, thought to have close ties with the Kremlin, had paid about $200 million for the publishing house and splashed out a further $30 million in November 2006 buying the Gazeta.ru web news portal from Sekret Firmy Publishing.

I subscribe to the Moscow Times and I read it every night. There is a lot of good information in their articles. Fair and balanced ? I don't know, but it is interesting.

As soon as Marina arrived in America, I made sure to subscribe to the newspaper: "B HOBOM CBETE". It is published/mailed from New York City once a week. My wife enjoys reading this publication VERY much. I think it is the Russian version of the American publication "National Enquirer".  :)

Here's a useful bilingual resource for Russian-Western international couples on strong relationship building, http://A Happy Life with a Russian Wife http://www.happyinterfamily.com
There should be The Statue of Responsibility erected beside the Statue of Liberty
