Dears,

this funny test was published by a Russian magazine Kommersant in 2006. It was apparently prepared to distinguish how much a particular respondent bears of what people call Russian culture.

http://www.kommersant.ru/k-vlast/vlast-test.asp

The authors believe that only a person who has lived a long time in Russia, therefore has watched Russian TV, movies, popular songs and books, has heard the most memorable Russian quotes and the ways Russians used to express themselves, could be able to fill in the missing words correctly.

Sorry the most AM would not be able to participate. But I hope the Russian women could amuse trying to answer :) and if they would be extremely kind, patent and take some time, they may try to explain some quotes to their husbands/fiancees :)

There are different levels, correct replies and statistics on the funniest wrong replies :)

Actually looks like a perfect manual for training spies  ;D

Enjoy! ;)

Da, da, Canada; Nyet, nyet, Soviet!

// "kommersant" AUTHORITY "
It is long ago known that Russia cannot live without the migrants, and many migrants do not want or they cannot normally live in Russia. Determining, man for the stay in our country is suitable, migratory service uses powerful bureaucracy. We propose the simpler method of obtaining the answer on this question.

The journal "Kommersant7- authority" prepared to help to the federal migratory service the version of special test program, which was capable of determining the degree of the communion of man of the Russian culture. This test would make it possible to regulate work not only with the aspirants to the citizenship, but also with the million-strong masses of guest workers. Indeed the equipping of simple test- points on the boundary of the country would ensure nedopusk into Russia of people, knowledge, tradition and interests of which they in no way correspond to federal level, but it means, with the high portion of probability they will lead to the sequential conflict.

The proposed product undoubtedly does not pretend to the irreproachable nature and the universal applicability, and proposals for its modification and improvement only are greeted. However, in its present form test it makes possible for those desiring in the individual order to verify, to what extent their readiness to bear the proud title of the citizen of the Russian Federation is justified.

Test consists of the tasks of five levels of complexity (according to the principle "from the simple to the complex"). Passage to the following level is accomplished in the case of correct answer to two thirds and more than questions. With the filling of the form of test it is necessary to use cyrillic alphabet and to soblyudat' the rule of orthography. The difference between the capital and lower-case letters is unessential. Numerals can be indicated both by the words and by the numbers.

We desire success!

The test is actually a test of knowledge of Russian ( or even Soviet ) culture of 70s- 80s - most of questions are citations (with omitted words) from popular books, movies, songs and fairy tales. And even communist propaganda posters. And most people admit it's really tough test - most fails on 2nd or 3rd level.

I agree with you vox11.

For a large part, culture is formed by what we read, see and hear around us every day. Those things that have been subject of the test were exactly heard and pronounced by average Soviets rather often.

I wonder has anyone heard of something similar that would reflect the essence of American culture..

when I returned to Russia in 2000 for the first time since 1979 my dad was still alive and as we were talking I unconciously used certain American/English words like "wow", realtor, deposit, etc. since I didn't even know how to say those in Russian..
My father looked at me with amazement and said: You've been gone for 20 years! how in the world do you know all this new Russian slang??? I found that prety funny.
I also found that a lot of slang that only musicians used in the late 70s, when I was 15, 16 y.o.  words like:
chuvak/chuviha, kachumay, berlyat', surlyat', klevo, pohilyali i t.d. now is used by everyone. Not all the words we used but many...
Used to be that no one around could understand what we were talking about :D

Lily, thank you for this test.
Mama mia, I laughed very much :).
For russians this test is very easy.
But it is so stupid to check emigrants in this way.
They need to know russian language first, only then-Russian culture, if they will have desire.
Such test could be maden only in my wonderful country :))))).
