Kuna's relating that he sang I've Got You Under My Skin at his wedding (http://www.russianwomendiscussion.com/index.php?topic=9880.msg192369#msg192369) reminded me that I've not mentioned that Cole Porter is my favourite song composer.

I've MIDI-orchestrated (www.floriani.it/ballroom-eng.htm) these 7 songs of his:

Fred Astaire & Ginger Roger's Night and Day number is from the The Gay Divorcee (1934):

A curiosity: in the movie, The Continental is possibly the longest musical number in history, I timed it to a total of 13 minutes IIRC, while Gene Kelly's Singing In The Rain is only 4 minutes.

Hey Eric, you seem to have mellowed out, musically speaking ;D.

On a totally different (set of) note(s), here's a couple of new pieces my choir is preparing now, Medieval music from the Catalunian Llibre Vermell de Montserrat (MS dates from about 1399).

Sandro.. did you happen to catch the lyrics of any of those songs?  Especially the last one?  Wait.. you wouldn't be pullin my leg now would ya?

So.. anyway.. while I had the S and M device applied to my typing fingers preventing me from "speaking" I did have the good fortune of going to see this show with 100,000 of my "best" friends... straight up rock and roll and high volume.. 3rd song is the best IMO

SONGS WITH LYRICS THAT MAKE NO SENSE

The refrain of Las Ketchup's Aserejé includes words that make no sense in Spanish. In 1972 our Adriano Celentano recorded Prisencolinensinainciusol, a song whose pseudo-English lyrics are utterly obscure :D:

The Girl Can't Help It

Eddie Cochran's 20 Flight Rock video is a clip from The Girl Can't Help It,  a 1956 comedy/musical film, starring Jayne Mansfield, Tom Ewell, and Edmond O'Brien (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Girl_Can't_Help_It), a huge hit among us teenagers here because it included some 18 hit songs of the period:

"The Girl Can't Help It" - Little Richard
"Tempo's Tempo" - Nino Tempo
"My Idea of Love" - Johnny Olenn
"I Ain't Gonna Cry No More" - Johnny Olenn
"Ready Teddy" - Little Richard
"She's Got It" - Little Richard
"Cool It Baby" - Eddie Fontaine
"Cinnamon Sinner" - Teddy Randazzo and the Three Chuckles
"Spread the Word" - Abbey Lincoln
"Cry Me a River" - Julie London
"Be-Bop-A-Lula" - Gene Vincent and the Blue Caps
"Twenty Flight Rock" - Eddie Cochran
"Rock Around the Rockpile" - Ray Anthony Orchestra
"Rocking Is Our Business" - The Treniers
"Blue Monday" - Fats Domino
"You'll Never, Never Know" - The Platters
"Every Time You Kiss Me" - Unknown, lip-synched by Jayne Mansfield
"Giddy Up Ding Ding" - Freddy Bell & The Bell-Boys

I already posted many of them, except for these:

My girlfriend sent this to me today. Some unknown person out there shot a portion of the Yoav show we attended in St. Petersburg a few weeks ago and posted it on YouTube. What a thrill it was to receive this and recall what it was like at that very moment, surrounded by a crowd that was 90% women, most of whom were beautiful (of course), while holding my lady in my arms while our bodies moved uncontrollably to the music.  :)

A SHORT HISTORY OF MODERN ITALIAN SONGS
The Cantautori period (Part 1)

I haven't yet posted any 'modern' Italian songs for obvious linguistic considerations, but maybe someone might be interested in this aspect of our pop music.

Up to the end of the 1950s, the roles of song writers and singers was definitely separate, with the latter leaning towards belcanto interpretations and being rewarded by winning our annual Festival della Canzone Italiana at Sanremo (started in 1951) with entries like:

The above winners for 1951 and 1956 will give you an idea of the then prevailing standard.

Then a new phenomenon emerged, that of cantautori (singing authors) who would perform as well as write their songs. In 1958 the competition was won by:

Better known internationally as Volare. However, we were still in a period when melody was paramount, and lyrics took second place.

Then a younger generation came along, possibly influenced by the earlier French authors of the late 1940s-early 1950s, who thought that a song should also tell a modern emotional story and that therefore lyrics should be less 'traditional' than before.

This new wave of cantautori was initially a group of then young men from Genoa, first among them painter Gino Paoli, born in 1934 and still active nowadays at age 75. His hits: Il cielo in una stanza (A skyful in my room, 1959), La gatta (The cat, 1960), Senza fine (Without end, 1961), Sapore di sale (A taste of salt, 1963).
