Putin “won the war” after Trump held a multi-hour phone conversation with Putin on February 12 going over the heads of Europe and without consulting Ukraine. The two leaders have proposed to meet in Riyadh for a bilateral negotiation, again without the participation of Kyiv or Brussels and the Trump team has already conceded to two of Putin’s three main demands to end the war.

Zelenskiy was particularly upset, saying in public that the fact that Trump had a phone conversation with Putin before calling him was deeply upsetting for him. Zelenskiy said on February 13 Ukraine would never accept any bilateral agreements cut between the US and Russia on its fate without participating in the talks.

Under the Biden administration, the line was that only Ukraine could decide how and when to end the war, but Trump appears to be taking matters into his own hands and will do a deal over Zelenskiy’s head.

After being blindsided by US President Donald Trump's call with President Putin, European leaders also rallied on February 13 saying that the EU and Ukraine must be included in any negotiations to end the war in Ukraine.

European leaders are afraid of Trump cutting a “quick and dirty” deal to bring the war to an end that will not take Kyiv’s needs into account and leave Europe with the burden of supporting Ukraine in the post war period by itself without US help.

Ukraine and other European countries could then chose to go along with it or chart another course independently.

e.g.  USA could agree to not provide any more assistance to Ukraine in return for access to natural resources in Russia and/or for various reductions in size of Russia nuclear capabilities and the possiblities go on and on.

Then . . . Ukraine and other European countries could decide to fight on against Russia . . . or not.

As a completely separate deal:  Ukraine and USA could come to some agreement for development of Ukraine resources.  This could include USA guarantee of security for these mining operations and could extend to the whole country . . . which obviously would impact what USA would agree to in part 1 above.

Yes, I know Trump has said no USA troops to Ukraine . . . but that can change . . . particularly when it is tied to a resources deal.

The bait is out but Zelensky doesn't seem to be going for it. Instead Zelensky is jigging quite the Cossack dance around any attempts by Trump to get him to the negotiation table. He's making the right move I think in avoiding any attempt to stitch humans Ukraine up with a bad deal. He likely knows it's better for him & Ukraine to avoid peace negotiations and prolong the war. Each day that Zelensky can add to the war now, Russia gets weaker. Before too long it's going to be very apparent that Russia's army has become weak and is out of sufficient Armaments to conduct ang offensive operations in Ukraine again. Weakness in its economy will also become apparent to the outside world.

Zelensky here is doing a fine turn at the Munich Security Conference turning tables on the EU and Eastern Europe that if Ukraine gets sold out to Russia, it will be next:

It's an approach that is likely to strike fear into countries such as Poland, Finland, etc who fear a Russian invasion of their lands themselves.

Considering this further there is more going on that can help Zelensky. If he keeps with the hanging tough line and refuses and peace negotiation one way or another by frustrating the process. Then if the US does pull aid the EU may be in a tricky situation to do the same, if they let Ukraine go it alone and Ukraine falls then the EU are going to have tons of Ukrainians heading into it's lands as Refugees - a MAJOR problem.

So if Zelensky has decided he doesn't care enough to be frightened into a peace deal with Russia because he can jet off to Israel if all goes pear shaped then he can be content to put all on red on a game if Russian Roulette and push on with war even if Ukrainian lines eventually start to crumble. My guess is that the EU/UK at least will end up supporting Ukraine under this situation and Ukraine will probably hold out long enough.

A problem Trump may have looking forward, depending on how Americans perceive him as doing are the US Midterms. If he is seen as doing badly then the House & Senate might go Democrat. That might stifle him for the following two years and that's him then done and probably off to a retirement home. In six months or so time some Congressmen & Senators are going to be focusing on the upcoming midterms on the horizon.

Other issue for Ukraine of course is that a peace treaty where it's open for Russia to invade again is no good fof them. Ukraine would have to keep a large standing army on its border in such a situation and that it cannot do for a long period of time due to it's now once again poor economy. So at the end of the day Ukraine may have little option anyway to fight this one out to the bitter end even without US support. May guess is though that out of the two Russia will likely crack first.

I say good on him for going all the way and saying stuff you to any capitulation to Putler. Russia's war is going nowhere in Ukraine and now as thought the Russian advance around Pokrovsk is running into trouble. Russian troops there are running out of resources and are starting to be pushed back. It will likely take a bit of time for the situation to be fully reversed there in Ukraine's favour it looks like Russia won't have the ability to take Pokrovsk and for them it means it's all over for them. Ukraine just has to hang on in there and give the two fingers up to any Trump/Putler peace deal. The war is now too far along and Russian resources too little for Ukraine's loss of US support to badly effect it enough. So long as Ukraine still has support from the EU/UK they should be fine.

Mainly Ukraine just has to stay entrenched in their positions and that takes less resources to hold those positions and wait for Russia's military and it's economy to crumble before their eyes.

Trump put his foot in it by calling Zelensky a 'Dictator' which showed what his real agenda is. He forgot Putler hadn't had free and fair elections fof over two decades in Russia so Putler can hardly call Zelensky illegitimate especially when the Ukrainian constitution allows for no elections during war time. The UK also had no elections during WWII.

Increasingly now from comments of those in power in Europe they are seeing Trump's as not one to side with but someone to be against. A lot of Europe is now waking up to the fact that their preservation best lies in supporting Ukraine and having Ukraine defend them instead of having to defend themselves.

So it's looking increasingly positive that Europe will go against Trump and will put up the necessary support that Ukraine will need to see the Russian threat off as Russia's economy increasingly weakens and it's Army run out of Armaments on the battlefield.

Most of those precious natural minerals that Trump is after are in Ukrainian territory currently held by Russia. That means either the US has to back Ukraine in continued funding to kick Russia out or some kind of a deal with Russia also. The latter wouldn't make sense to also make a minerals deal with Russia so much. They might but odds are the US will now want Russia to evacuate the Donbass area. Russia won't be happy about that and will probably hold out for as long as they can, maybe up to a year or whenever they see it as the conflict pointlessly going nowhere.

Potentially Trump could see that his attempt to get a peace deal with Putler that does over Ukraine for territory going nowhere. Zelensky held out on minerals to get a better deal then seeing if he struck the right deal, a long term deal he could bring US interests on side, just what interests Trump. Trump will now have a vested interest in making sure that Russia isn't an impediment to US interests in the area in accessing those mineral rights.

Potentially Trump could still make a deal with Putler for US companies to have access to those lands that are in the territory that Russia controls just to get at the minerals but it's messy. Unless the US signs a deal also with Russia then Russia will argue that it doesn't recognise the Ukrainian Minerals deal. Odds are Trump could now be happy to back Ukraine arguing that he has sorted US interests and wait for Russia to get fed up and have to leave in the end through a broken economy and a broken military.

Potentially if there is a peace deal it might just involve Russia quitting those lands in exchange for Ukraine agreeing not to join NATO and possibly the EU as well to save a bit of face for Russia. Something tells me Russia won't be returning anytime soon after all of this lol.

We'll see what happens from here I guess and if Trump really does change his tune at all.
