--- Quote from: Boethius on July 04, 2021, 11:12:41 AM ---No, he can't fire anyone.  He can't "fire" elected Duma members, for example.

As powerful as Putin is, he is there at the will of the Russian people.  When/if they tire of him, he will be gone.  Whether that power is manipulated by media vs a vs the population is a different matter.  Putin is no more powerful than an American president, although he certainly doesn't have the same media scrutiny or criticism.

--- End quote ---

He would be there even if the Russians didn't vote for him. He'll be gone when HE wants to be gone. No more powerful than an American president? In his own country he certainly is. Or outside his country when he wants to kill someone he considers a traitor.

Boethius:
We can't know if Putin would be in power if Russians didn't vote for him.  While I am no Putin fan, I don't believe half of the things ascribed to him.

To get back to the topic, Jennifer Patico is a cultural anthropologist.  Here are her articles -

I read the one published December, 2017, and it was very interesting.
