If you want to keep your expressions convergent, never allow them a single degree of freedom.

RACHMANINOFF & SCRIABIN
(1873–1943) (1872–1915)

Both great pianists and composers, born within one year of one another and hailed as the musical heirs of Liszt and Chopin, respectively.

Liszt's & Rachmaninoff's hands

Chopin's hands

Liszt and Rachmaninoff had longer fingers than Chopin, and Scriabin is known for having had small hands that could barely grasp a 9th interval on the keyboard. The piano music of first 2 indeed often sounds extrovert and passionate, while the latter 2's sound more introvert and intimate.

However, tonight I heard an early piece by Rachmaninoff (Élégie in E Flat Minor, Op. 3, No. 1) and one by Scriabin that sound just the opposite of what is traditionally believed ;):

Interesting observation, Sandro.

When he first arrived here, I purchased a CD of all Rachmaninoff's recordings, played by Rachmaninoff, for my hubby.  (Most conducted by Stowkowski).  He was shocked at the difference between Richter's interpretation, and that of the composer, and is still awed by the latter, decades later.

Now for something a bit more plebian -

After the fall of communism, the biggest mistake Boris Yeltsin's regime made was not to disband the KGB altogether. Instead it changed its name to the FSB and, to many observers, morphed into a gangster organisation, eventually headed by master criminal Vladimir Putin. - Gerard Batten

"Telstar" is another of my favourites  .  However, if you cross the Atlantic Ocean, Hank Marvin (although obviously biased!), reckons that this one is the greatest of them all:

Getting to the bottom of the barrel, it's probably my memory going.
I think this is considered the most popular pop instrumental.

Antonín Dvořák
(1841–1904)

This Czech composer resided from 1892 to 1897 in New York City, where he was also the director of the National Conservatory of Music. He is mostly known for his Symphony No.9 "From the New World", commissioned by the New York Philharmonic in 1893, but here I want to share one of his several beautiful melodies, from the Allegretto grazioso (3rd movement) of his previous Symphony No.8, a captivating waltz:
