We enjoyed this movie, The Romanovs: An Imperial Family, this weekend. The movie has English subtitles making it convenient for both Russian and English speakers and is about the final 18 months before the family was murdered by the Communists.

This is part 1 of 13. When each segment is completed the next one should load along the right hand column and will play automatically.

The mosfilm website has the ability to filter movies by those that have english subtitles. There are some fantastic russian films on there.
"They fought for their country" - is probably the best war film I have ever seen, bar none. они сражались за родину is the russian title. It's on youtube (posted by mosfilm) with sub-titles I am pretty sure.
My wife's grandfather died in the initial assault by Hitler in 42 - this film gives me some insight into her history and understanding of her family.

This is one of those movies that is very helpful in understanding the Russian side of the Great Patriotic War. Set in Belarus at the very start of the war, BREST FORTRESS is the story of that famous battle.
It is over 2 hours and does have English subtitles. It would easily be one of my top 10 movies of all time.
Often it is not available on YouTube but it is now...until they pull it again.

There is a film in French. With Russian undertiteling, about a minor French nobleman who goes to Russia to meet some MOB woman.
It is a film version of every mistake you can make in this 'adventure'.
In the end there is a happy ending for most concerned.
What is this film called and the IMBD reference?

According to Julia the movie which is in fact a Russian film with both French and Russian dialogue was simply called the Frenchman. It does not show up on the IMDb database.
While quite wealthy after meeting some Russians also traveling by train to meets the woman he gets drunk and they rob in. Another scene has him and his father in law getting drunk in winter as I recall and falling down a snow covered hill.

Lily,
Do you know where I can find any of these? For some reason our small local library has Alexander Nevsky and about once a year I
see it on U.S. TV while surfing. My wife won't watch it anymore.
