Guys - I was ONLY joking about her looking like me. I hope not!

She takes after her mom in most ways - and Olya is terrific with her. She's 2-1/2 now and she speaks Russian and English alike - knows both alphabets - and is adorable - but she really doesn't look like me (heavens NO).

Mischief,

I couldn't agree more! This is a picture of my son Kalvin. He's 8 (boy, how time flies) taken at Donetsk Airport after 28.5 hours of travel Dec.26th 2005. It was the first time he has ever seen snow, so of course we had to have a snowball fight..... Especially after I got hit in the back of the head with a snowball!:) It was an amazing and humbling experience for him to go to Ukraine! He got meet is future step mom and sister. Together we were able to celebrate the holidays with her family and Ukrainian traditions! He will never forget it.

Anyway, congratulations to all the parents! I love being a father!!!!

Have to say we all have some beautiful children. Never had the opp to raise a girl so I envy those of you that get to scare the begeebees out of those eventual 16 yr old boys that come knockin on your door.  That's our future were raising up. Keep them safe  and remember to instill in them that there is right and wrong. Our values become their values. Give them the opportunity to know God and how to honor Him.

I wish that were true Bruno, unfortunately it is not & we can never have children, at least not my children. It is the one bump in our relationship & the one I feared & thought we had settled before we married. Unfortunately she sees all these pictures & her hormones start giving way to common sense & the reality of our situation.

Tis' someting I must deal with someday I know but at present we are at a stalemate. The problem also arises that she did not inform her Mother of this fact & everytime she visits or calls she wants to know when we are going to give her a Grandchild. Very sticky situation.:(

Our only option is Artificial Insemination & that is from what we have learned very unreliable here & much more costly than I can afford. So we are stuck with the situation as is & hopefully her hormones will stop shouting at her in the next couple of years & things will settle down. That or I'll wind up at the same hitchin' post as Jack, which is also a possibility.

My girlfriend had to go through IVF treatment in MOscow, I believe it cost her 2 K per try, she had to give up after 3 attempts, but she was on russian income. If you are in Tver' may be you could consider visit to Moscow.

Wild Orchid...We did look into that but at 2K per try it is out of our league at present. I do live in Tver but I also live on a Russian income. I am not rich & have unlimited resources like others hereabouts & my wife deffinitely did not marry me for my money. Maybein the futureshould things workout but right now, no chance.

Ken Richard and Bruno,

Thanks for the kind comments.  Tamara is a mixture.  My eye color her mum's eye shape.  My bad temper, her mum's long legs ;)

At times she is a little angel. At others (like ALL of last night!) -  a fractious banshee

It's like rafting you have to go with the flow....

Vaughn Lenara is beautiful!  How are you coping with the boys??? :P

Richard

IVF is no easy option.  Some of my friends have been forced this way (A consequence of starting a family late in life)  It is an emotional roller coaster with NO guarantee of success.  In your situation adoption might be an easier option.  I will not say more on a public forum.  Good Luck which ever choice you make.

Thanks Leslie...I have no problem with adoption at all & would be more than willing to take on a homeless waif. Unfortunately my wife doesn't feel the same. As she is perfectly capable of bearing a child she wants her own. It is deffinitely a sticky situation. So far it hasn't been even close to a deal breaker but that is not to say that that trend will continue. For now I just grin & bear it & hope for the best.

And yes I can well imagine the emotional rollercoaster of the IVF process & with no guarrantees & repeat visits I can just see the costs skyrocketing. If I was a rich man I would be willing to go for it, but being as I ain't, it makes things difficult.

Maybe I need to take up a collection!!!;)

Thanks for all the compliments about Lenara. It's been a pleasure to help raise her the past 3 years as she's extremely low-maintenance, and an honor student. She's had trouble making many American friends, and usually her night out will be with a more than a dozen Russian/Armenian/Moldovan kids of both genders - they fill an entire row at the moviehouse, and several tables at Chi-Chi's afterwards. Many of these kids looked forward to becoming teenagers in the FSU - and for one reason or another, wound up in North Carolina - where, apparently, there are no venues for them to dance - they organize their own parties and dance to reggaeton.

Because my first wife could not bear children, we decided to adopt, and ended up with two healthy daughters, 4 years apart. Adoption's not for everyone - we had to think long and hard about all aspects. In 1983 we visited an orphanage in the Houston area - that visit sealed it - we did not see how we could survive without blessing ourselves with one of these children. Even back then, I liked things Russian, so we named our first daughter Lara, who's now almost 20. She's half English, and half Norwegian, and as it turns out she looks alot like my 3 sisters. Lara and I are as close as a father and daughter can be. Here's my firstborn, my Lara....

I think this is what it is all about, Happy families and beautiful children. I especially like seeing the photos of the little one.  i do not have any little ones at the moment but Yulia and i are working on it :D But I do have two sons from my previous marriage. Being the proud Papa that I am, I wanted in to include my " monkeys".  The guy in the middle is not me, he is the hunting guide. I took the photo.

All the children are very cute and I have one question.

Is it really possible for a child from the FSU to be an honor roll student with a language barrier?

I have a reason for asking this based on my step son's experiences in the US. I don't think some teachers have the time or motivation to try to teach someone who is not completely passive andmalleable. Maybe I am wrong.

If the kid isn't getting it it is either a communication problem or the teacher not being willing to rethink their teaching method for the child. The ESL teachers I am sure are trying but the teachers in regular non ESL classes seem not to have the time.

SoC,

Admittedly our experience is different as Sergei is only in kindergarten this year but his teacher has told us already that he's at the top of his class in math and social studies. She also told us that his English is better than many of the kids who were born here.

With your boy being a teenager some of the issues could well be caused by this. I'd advise to talk to the teacher(s) and/or guidance councilor about this as soon as you can.

As a teacher, by high school we have figured out one thing:  The Kids that are going to do well, are going to do well because they put forth the effore (regardless of intelligence), and those that do poorly are going to do poorly either through a combination of lack of effort and parental non-involvment (and when I mean non involment I dont mean showing up at the school and bitching, I mean helping the kid with homework and making sure they are doing whats needed), or being quite literally retarded (or dyslexic or something as that happens occasionally.  There are two theories on this, the Bush Administration theory of no child left behind, and my theory of leave dumbasses in remedial classes (aka behind).  Our education system is utterly devestated (due to liberals mostly) because they are trying to make everyone equal when there is NO ONE equal.  Most teachers teach to the middle intelligence kids in the class meaning that the intelligent kids are bored, unchalleneged and utterly unmotivated (its why our country is in a massive crash and burn educationally), and the dumb kids are not getting the attention they need either (chances are their parents only care enough to annoy the school but not enough to get off their asses and turn off the TV to teach Jr. how to read).  Sorry enough of my rant.

Ahhh, seeing pictures of these cute kid's sure bring back such pleasant memories. My three children are all grown and on their own now. Had my first child, a son, when I was 19, my baby Rachel is soon to be 21. After thirty two years of raising children it's time to now spoil the grand kids and what's so cool about grand kid's is you can send them home when your thru playing with them.

But I do have one dependent female (Sasha) and male (Maximus) living with me and when I arrive home daily I am attacked.

Yes, it is possible. How was your step-son doing back home? May be your expectations of him are too high? Not every sudent in US is an honor student, it goes for locals as well.

I hear you, son of Clyde - we had difficulties like this during the first year, with regular courses (non-ESL) posing greater challenges with language for which Lenara was not prepared. I urged her to read, read, read, even books that may have been below her age-level. It helped immensely. Often she'll author rough drafts, and I'll make grammatical corrections - but (here's the key) I coach her on the corrections rather than simply let her turn in the corrected versions. She's not been adequately challenged here in math and science, so she's excelling in those areas - but anything requiring free thought, critique or interpretation of meaning - we get together and I tutor her. I have no doubt that Maryland academic standards are far higher than where we reside - and your son is still weathering the initial adjustment - don't expect miracle report cards just yet - but he will catch on in short order. Stay involved consistently, without being the pain-in-the-ass Papa that we're usually perceived to be. Three teenagers in our household is a force stronger than gravity - and all females, to boot. Well, this is the assigment for which I dutifully volunteered, no complaints, but I do need an occasional cobweb-shaker stroll down the lane....

There are many gaps to fill in. Lenara will use a word like "eloquent" properly, and then a moment later will ask me what a "barrel" is. So it's as if she's learing the advanced American language without the elementary foundation that homegrown children tend to have in their arsenal.

Maryland academic standards are very low.  65% of all high school students state wide (not just the city) failed a basic English test.  As a nation our standards are so low it is sickening.  Math and Science are the subjects hardest hit with poor academics as we are at LEAST 3 years behind where most other nations are in terms of advancement.  Sure the numbers LOOK good, but its all falsified to keep the $$$ rolling in to schools.  So many schools offer tests, retests, make up work, extra credit, that by the time a respectable grade comes back, it is virtually worthless because you dont have to know anything to aquire it.  I have professors that literally give the questions and answers to tests and quizzes because the kids refuse to study, or put forth an iota of effort.  The colleges arent even allowing people to fail anymore except in some extreme circumstances and its damn sad that many of us are "educated" idiots.

I learned far more once I was out of the school system. I only did poorly in one college class, probably because it was over my head at the time. I would take classes just to see how challenging they were and I discovered that Spanish was not for me. It is much easier to learn languages with someone to help you that you can practice with. I think with some help I may be able to learn Russian because I hear it spoken daily at my house. I feel very sorry for many students in Baltimore. Daknack, you are right on the money on this one. There is very little encouragement from the teachers unless you are a very gifted student.

My wife and her son have been here two years.  Son of Clyde asked about the language barrier and grades.  Our now 17 year old did not do well in the first semester due to the language barrier, spring semester.  The ESL teacher is good and he was and is committed to learning the language and being an integrated citizen.  They both don't want to live in the past and put a lot of effort into learning the language.  They also had about a year of private tutoring before arriving.  This year he is a 4.0 student and was student of the month last month.  Kids pick up a new language quickly, especially if they are smart and motivated.

It's time to move on to children photos.  Katrina is 9 months old.  I really like all the photos in this section.  Children photos are great.  They sure get cute after the first few months.

Here is me with Lily's son Kirill last September - he turned three in August.

At my last visit in February, in front of all the family, he said (in russian, of course) "I go with mom to America!"

We took him with us to the hotel.  When we got there, he asked her "Are we in America yet?"

LOL!!

We get along great!  I have 3 boys and one girl from a previous marriage, so it's nothing new to me.  I took along blocks and cars, and we played together.  At my second visit, when he saw me again, he ran right up to me, and I picked him up and we hugged each other tightly.

Can't wait until they're here, should be in July sometime.

Tim

Richard,

If the pic is more than 800 pixels wide, then it posts as a link instead of an inline photo. You can resize them, if you care to - and catzenmouse *sometimes* offers tutorials for those of us (like me) who are graphics-challenged.

That Works, train them to dust mop the floor while you potty train them, LOL. The Japanese never cease to amaze me!!! Very intuitive folks!!!

Thanks Racer. Actually I could resize it no problem, but nowhere did anything say it had to be 800 pixels or under or I woulda known & then done it. I just thought perhaps I screwed up something, LOL.

Anyway rush down to your local 7-11 & get your Baby Mop today!!!!:D:D

I think we need a version with a couple of tanks on the back. One for soapy water and one for rinse. Might as well get them mopping the kitchen floor too while they are at it! :D

I made this topic a 'Sticky' as I agree with one of the members who said that it is this sort of topic which illustrates why we are all in the 'game.'

I attended a concert the other day in which the main singer made an appeal - and his basic comment was "It's all about the babies!"

This topic shows quite a number of our "babies" - whether adults or not - and how prominent and important they are in our lives.

In all my travels around the world, the one abiding and universal desire expressed by everyone is - they want to build a world that is better for their children than the one they had.

I hope the members continue to contribute to this topic with photos and stories of their loved ones.

Tearaway Toma is now 10 months old.

She does not need a special suit to polish the hardwood floors.  Just an old pair of dungarees.  It is 20 metres from the front to the back of the house, just a couple of minutes crawl for the rugrat sprinter !

This photo is in the same car seat.  One of the few ways of keeping her still.

Mischief,

Daniel has grown !  The second picture is so full of life.

BC,

Kiddy power is amazing!  It is 5.00 am.  Toma is screaming at the top of her lung.  She is impatient and bad tempered - just like her dad who is entertaining thoughts of cooking her!  Then she grins and blows a raspberry at me and I melt....

Ken,

Great photo.  For me growing kids is one of the main reasons for marriage.

Take a look at the photo on the left. This what happens after a few years. The expense of diapers is replaced by prom dresses and 'hey dad, I need a car'. The baby talk is replaced by homework essays on some subject you might remember from years ago, and the 2AM feedings is replaced by where is she it's 1AM? But if you did a good job in parenting, man o man, is it ever worthwhile. I would not have it any other way.

I used to have a T shirt that said in the front "D.A.D. Dads aganist Diapers". In the back it said "It not just a job, it's a doody". LOL.

(note to newer parents..yes, they do grow up VERY quickly. So enjoy every moment) (second note..that smile is from one very proud dad)

I am able to tell all of you, charish every moment, good and bad....they never will come again, and soon that "Baby" will be going out the door with a smile ....waving goodby.

It is refreshing to hear feedback from you because you are female and of a different generation than many of the guys who post here.

I'll jump in. Mamma D has been posting for years on the old St. Johns list. She is an AW married to an AM for MANY years - and with a son who married a RW and brought over her son. You will almost NEVER hear her refer to them as anything other than her "daughter" and "grandson." The pride with which she speaks of her family is remarkable - and I have enjoyed Mamma D's perspective and wit for years.

I am very grateful she has elected to offer her perspectives and experience with us here at RWD. She is a gem.

Indeed I am an American Women with a husbantd of 57 years....Yea same man.... Ain't he good lookin'?

I have two natural born sons.... and many more "of the heart" and proud of them all! :).

Papa was a career Air Force Sargent.....We moved many times and lived and made friends all over the world. I saw Europe right after the World war II.. bombed and burned.....and the people picking up the pieces of not only their lives, but of their counties too. I felt the pride of an American and volunteered at the childrens Hospital in Manchester.UK

My son has asked if I would like to re-visit. NO way, the people I knew and loved, are all gone now and my memories are in tact. The horror of war and hate, the joy of good friends and seeing them move ahead, they are my reality.

I know, that if we do not find a way to make piece, and insert some tolerance into our lives .... we will only create pain and sorrow.

The young ones... the children that come here and become American Russians ... are the hope of the future in bridging our two cultures and moving toward better thing.

Do not be afraid to love these kids.. and give them the best future you can....This is my message, do not be afraid....

Momma D and I have exchanged a couple of PMs regarding these kids; her "grandkids", and "my kids", I say "my kids" because I couldn't be more proud of them if they were my own. I'm sure she feels the same way.  These young people are as much a part of the family as any blood relative, and we are damned lucky to have them with us.

Give them to me at birth, to about seven years old.......What a joy they are  :)
First, sweet bundles to enjoy rocking at nap and bedtime, and then as toddlers... still rocking, adding stories from books and beginning to learn to count, and read small books....taking walks and examining nature, the wonder of flowers and tree bark, and the changing of colors in the fall. Watching Mrs. Robin build her nest, and then watching for signs of the little ones....so many new things... :) introducing music into young lives...watching mamma Squirrel teach her babies to walk a telephone line and get upside down....not once, but twice!

The remorse of sending them off to school... and later when you know you did your job well... let them try their wings, but keep an eye on them....they are not sufficient unto themselves.  :o

Bring them back about 14 and .... what a joy they are... Still learning, with the ability to discuss it, and share what they are learning.!  They are now friends, real individuals that can socialize and enjoy a relationship that is growing and deepening.

Have you ever been to the tide pools with a group of teens? or tried to skate on those new roller blades? wow, what a day that was! Or Square danced with a teen square... and brought home more kids than you took....or come home to an empty fridg.  :-\  Only to find you cupboards bulging and fridge in the same condition the next day. Been invited to dinner and a movie, so they could test their manners before they really went on a date.......

Or hauled Judo kids to tournament over 4 states? What a great bunch they were...Been involved in 4H activities? And swelled with pride from watching those skinny kids bring home ribbons they had earned, and supervised killing jars, because other moms were fearful of the chemicals....and having one kid win a full scholarship for entomology....He took National championship ribbons in Chicago that year.....

I would come in from work to so many suprises... once a full course dinner with candles no less! It seemed in those years kids cycled through my hose at regular intervals....

After my sons left home, one the service and the other away to collage, I still had kids. I knew fist.. who was having a baby, who was getting engaged and usually was first to see the ring....They kept me informed!

And I was a working mom.....who lovevs them all ages....birth to 56 just now!   :kissing: :noidea: :clapping: :clapping:

Ken, Ken & Dan.

Thanks for the compliments on the kid. It should be no surprise, as that is what Olga's Mom's gypsy palm-reader predicted - "an extremely beautiful leetel geerl that gypsies will try to steal."

Olga thought for sure it would be a boy, and we both dismissed the palm-reader as old Ukrainian Baba caca, but now we are both believers and I've got Mom running company stock names and lotto numbers by her.

I am constantly on guard for the gypsies. And I've thoroughly briefed our Black Lab on gypsies - showed him some National Geographic photos of gypsies and instructed him to get up off his bed and start barking if he sees any wagons pull up to the house, people wearing bright clothes and scarves, Cher, etc.

Moderator Ken, I've put up the GoEastNow links as you suggested, although "member to member exchange" sounds like some kind of scary gay thing. (I have heard rumors to that effect about this web site on other boards.)

Dan, it was a series of 21 articles I wrote about two years ago, before the baby came (when I had more time). Each article was about a page long and dove-tailed into the next one sequentially, telling a story about what its like being married to a young Russian woman from an isolated (still Communist) city in Ukraine. The pregnancy and child are an underlying and constant theme, as are the cultural differences surrounding them and the marriage. I put the articles up on a number of Internet discussion boards and they were pretty popular. I started putting them up on this board right before I left it whenever that was. But only got only maybe two or three of them up here before we ran into a problem. You may recall. I will consider putting them up again if we can prevent that same problem from recurring. Probably best to take that discussion off-line. Write or call if you think there is potential. Maybe I will finish the story. (The articles stopped short of the birth, because the baby actually came before I could finish writing, and after that I did not have a free minute or hand until recently. A lot of people wrote to me asking me to finish the story, but I never got around to it.)

Doug

For all the Daddy's out there with growing daughters, you can pre-screen who sees them:

Also the purchase of a new shotgun and a new shovel is also advised.  Keeps any would-be suitors 'honest!'

She is just beautiful, Dan.  She looks like you in the first photo and Olya in the second one.  My little "snowflake" turned 30 last week.  I spoke to her for along time about how precious she is to me reminiscing about her birth, the early years (like the stage your daughter is in now) and  how many times during her young life that she made me so proud to be her Dad.  By the end of the conversation, she was crying pretty hard and Dad was a bit misty eyed too.  Enjoy these years, Dan, because in a blink of an eye, she will be 30 like mine!
Thanks for sharing.

We clearly settled on a Russian name (Ekaterina).

And Olya has done a PHENOMENAL job of teaching her Russian language (just as an aside). She moves fluidly back-and-forth between English and Russian - and even acts as interpreter for her older siblings. Pretty cute to watch.

Congrats on your snowflake Dan, very pretty kid. I like the Russian names for girls, though I'm not too sure about Russian names for boys. Well done to your Olya for teaching your daughter Russian, demand for Russian speakers is rising in the business world esp. in the oil and mineral sectors. Being bilingual would definitely be a plus in the future job world apart from the kids being able to communicate with their grandparents and family back home.

I did some work on hand-held voice recognition devices and learned a lot working with the linguists.  Our brains pattern sounds that we hear beginning before birth and cease storing those patterns about 6 or 7 years of age.  Children that are not taught another language but that are exposed to it, i.e. hear it on a regular basis, are able to pick up that language extremely quickly and easily later as adults.

This early pattern imprinting is the reason that Japanese have such difficulty with the "L" in English.  They never hear the sound as youngsters, and the sound never patterns in the brain, hence it's difficult to match later.  Same thing happens to all of us.  Sounds that another language have that we don't hear and pattern when we were very young are difficult to re-create later on.

My oldest son and his wife have regularly spoke Spanish and English with their kids since birth and now my grand kids can carry on a conversation switching between English and Spanish several times in the same sentence!  And all without a discernible accent.

My dad didn't begin learning English until he entered school, 7 years old, 1st grade in northern Montana.  His speech is noticeably different from my aunts and uncles who are younger than he is.

Now that might prove to be a worthwhile topic. Last June as we posted our
coincidental TR's, Ken, you'll recall about how Elvira got a bit teary-eyed at how
"everyone had forgotten" about her when we were left standing on the sidewalk
alone, uninvited to continue the grad celebration....

But that's a whole 'nudder subject - anybody game?

This thread's about the kids.....  and I'd like to see more proud
mamas and papas posting photos.

Wow! That's a BIG improvement, Ken!  I know it changes your feelings about this summer a lot!

Marina feels the same.  She's tired of the "best city in the world" and told me today that we would only stay there a week and then go to the Black Sea.

A bit of a topic drift...so I'll say in terms of children...after her being away for 3 weeks...and our reunion at the black sea...I may be posting a pic in this section come next April or May, 2008  ;D  LOL

Well, it is official..... Our Basil will enter Stanford University in Palo Alto, California this fall....  :) At seventeen YO....! He graduated from our magnet school for International Baccalaureate honors classes 5th out of nearly 600 seniors.

He was accepted by no less than 7 very good schools!  :) He took Stanford because of the top notch Physics department.

He will, like all students at Stanford, enjoy dorm living!  ;) and I am wondering, what he will think of the winter under Palm trees.....

I am wondering, if dorm rooms are any bigger than I remember... and how all the planned supplies will fit!

Mercy, how excited we were when we arrived to discover who we would live with.....Well, my roommate beccame a pediatrician, married to an OB .....They brought out the last plane load of orphans from Saigon.....A very long time ago.... :)

Please, enjoy every moment with those little and bigger ones....They grow too fast and leave too soon.

Vaughn,

What was your not so little dyevushka's feelings about returning to her mother country?  Did it speak to her soul?

If all goes to plan I too will be taking a 16-yo back to her mother country 5 years after she left.  Her mama has had enough of Russia and does not want to return ever, but feels that her children will need the experience to understand their roots.

All kids are so precious... U even give them russian names, uh?
 Did u baptise them?

In our case, Katya (Ekaterina) was "dedicated" in our church. This differs from baptism in that, in our faith, we believe to be baptised, a person must have reached the 'age of accountability' so that they may discern right from wrong. A young child is still learning about right/wrong, and of course, developing their own individual beliefs (albeit HEAVILY influenced by their parents and siblings). The dedication of an infant is more for the parents, friends and family as it represents a commitment to raise the child in a God-fearing and Christ-loving home. The baptism, which will come later, will be HER OWN decision to make a public expression of her faith and beliefs in Christ and commitment to follow His will for her life.

Now, to be clear, my wife and I are not Orthodox. Olya did not throw off any previous faith from Ukraine, only that when she arrived here in the US, we suffered some very difficult circumstances which allowed (forced) both of us to refocus our belief systems, and we centered on a Christian/Protestant faith. Neither of us are particularly dogmatic, though our faith is vibrant and quite alive. We have friends who range from evangelical Christians to Muslims to agnostics and atheists. Olya has often described her religious faith in Ukraine as one which believed that God was there for her - when she needed Him - but that she had, and felt, no obligation or need to "be there for Him." That has now changed, dramatically.

My amazing nephew

JC - what a handsome boy!

Vaughn,

It's about time you print out a bunch of copies of the 10 Rules for dating your daughter. Give it to her so she can pass it out to the boys who are thinking about dating her.

Rule One:
If you pull into my driveway and honk, you'd better be delivering a package, because you're sure not picking anything up.

Rule Two:
You do not touch my daughter in front of me. You may glance at her, so long as you do not peer at anything below her neck. If you cannot keep your eyes or hands off of my daughter's body, I will remove them.

Rule Three:
I am aware that it is considered fashionable for boys of your age to wear their trousers so loosely that they appear to be falling off their hips. Please don't take this as an insult, but you and all of your friends are complete idiots. Still, I want to be fair and open minded about this issue, so I propose his compromise: You may come to the door with your underwear showing and your pants ten sizes too big, and I will not object. However, in order to ensure that your clothes do not, in fact, come off during the course of your date with my daughter, I will take my electric nail gun and fasten your trousers securely in place to your waist.

Rule Four:
I'm sure you've been told that in today's world, sex without utilizing a "barrier method" of some kind can kill you. Let me elaborate: when it comes to sex, I am the barrier, and I will kill you.

Rule Five:
In order for us to get to know each other, you may think we should talk about sports, politics, and other issues of the day. Please do not do this. The only information I require from you is an indication of when you expect to have my daughter safely back at my house, and the only word I need from you on his subject is "early."

Rule Six:
I have no doubt you are a popular fellow, with many opportunities to date other girls. This is fine with me as long as it is okay with my daughter. Otherwise, once you have gone out with my little girl, you will continue to date no one but her until she is finished with you. If you make her cry, I will make you cry.

Rule Seven:
As you stand in my front hallway, waiting for my daughter to appear, and more than an hour goes by, do not sigh and fidget. If you want to be on time for the movie, you should not be dating. My daughter is putting on her makeup, a process that can take longer than painting the Golden Gate Bridge. Instead of just standing there, why don't you do something useful, like changing the oil in my car?

Rule Eight:
The following places are not appropriate for a date with my daughter: Places where there are beds, sofas, or anything softer than a wooden stool. Places where there are no parents, policemen, or nuns within eyesight. Places where there is darkness. Places where there is dancing, holding hands, or happiness. Places where the ambient temperature is warm enough to induce my Daughter to wear shorts, tank tops, midriff T-shirts, or anything other than overalls, a sweater, and a goose down parka zipped up to her throat. Movies with a strong romantic or sexual theme are to be avoided. Movies, which feature chainsaws, are okay. Hockey games are okay. Old folks homes are better.

Rule Nine:
Do not lie to me. I may appear to be a pot-bellied, balding, middle-aged, dim-witted has-been. But on issues relating to my daughter, I am the all-knowing, merciless god of your universe. If I ask you where you are going and with whom, you have one chance to tell me the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. I have a shotgun, a shovel, and five acres behind the house. Do not trifle with me.

Rule Ten:
Be afraid. Be very afraid. It takes very little for me to mistake the sound of your car in the driveway for a chopper coming in over a rice paddy outside of Hanoi. When my Agent Orange starts acting up, the voices in my head frequently tell me to clean the guns as I wait for you to bring my daughter home. As soon as you pull into the driveway you should exit your car with both hands in plain sight. Speak the perimeter password, announce in a clear voice that you have brought my daughter home safely and early, then return to your car - there is no need for you to come inside. The camouflaged face at the window is mine.

What was your not so little dyevushka's feelings about returning to her mother country?  Did it speak to her soul?

Gator, in short, after nearly 90 days in Russia, she was more than ready to come home. In previous summers she
returned with a tiny bit of regret - thinking that life was fairly fun & easy there. Her Mom and I reminded her that
she was "on vacation" - that living and working there is quite a different thing. In her advanced age, she now
realizes all that without prompting - and was anxious to get back to work and school.

Vaughn - she is cute beyond words. I imagine you are going to have your hands more than full in the not-so-distant future - if you don't already.
It's about time you print out a bunch of copies of the 10 Rules for dating your daughter. Give it to her so she can pass it out to the boys who are thinking about dating her.

Two years ago some boy parked and honked the horn in front of our home. You should have seen his
face turn chalk white when Dad emerged to straighten his attitude out.

I'm happy to report she's in control without my having to impose rules. She's very independent and wants no
part of a serious relationship at this point in her life. A police officer buddy of mine, visiting his own MIL,
happened to run into Lenara on the arm of one of Yoshkar Ola's "glamour boys" - a kid with a degree, nice
looking and flamboyant. My buddy thought "Oh no - he's Mafia for sure" and counseled Lenara on my behalf.
The kid spent oodles of money and gave her lots of attention, yet she wasn't fazed one iota. Just another
date to her. Here's a few more photos from her summer, the first one with "the Kid"...

Perhaps out of the ordinary here, the 3rd photo is with her natural Dad, with whose family she maintains
a healthy relationship.

Wants to stay at Stanford forever!
He has to really study! And mom is not there to PUSH!

Is it really possible for a child from the FSU to be an honor roll student with a language barrier?

Yes, my daughter struggled the first couple of years while she was learning English. She started in the fourth grade and by the end of seventh grade the school sent a letter that she is no longer considered an English learner.  Starting with the seventh grade she has had a GPA of no lower than 4.0.  Of course this was about the time I was no longer able to help with homework :).  She finished her sophomore year with a 4.25 GPA with all honors classes.  Her junior year just started and she is eagerly waiting her first progress report to ensure she is still on track because the junior year numbers are what university admissions folks will look at when she pursues her degree.

YES...YES.....AGAIN     YES! ! !

Basil came here at age eleven.....They put him in ESL Classes....one little Russian kid with all those Mexican kids....Result... one little Russian kid learns little English, but a fair amount of Mexican!

Next semester. my son insisted he be mainstreamed. He read Russian books online and did well in math (very well) since math is International....Teacher complained he always had his nose in a book....but did well in math and science! Mother teaching him all Russian studies he would be taking in Russia thanks to internet and suitcases of books)... Spending three hours at the piano...

Seventh grade, the Middle school has it's first Math competitive team... ( Russian two, Chinese one,Korean one and a couple of Mexican kids. Only one American kid!) They went to State and took second place..Thank You.

Next year added a Science team... same kids, plus a few more joined... Dick & Irena are the pushers....Teachers are getting interested, when the kids are competing and coming home in the top three!    Then they added debate..... Did you know that kids are able to think in two languages? They are all very good in English now, and tore the compitition up !

Meanwhile, Basil is still being tutored in Russian studies at home. And read 90 books in Russian and English and did reports on them....including "War and Peace". I still wonder about how that teacher reacted to that one.

Summer came and he wanted to take a summer class at the local Jr. Collage...." Can't be done,     but if he can pass the entrance exam maybe"  ...."OK what time?"
He was there and took the test and did well. Took the Philosophy class and got an "A",   Instructor shakes his head and says..."Man, can that kid write"

Returns to old school in Russia and the kids don't know where he has been... but America? NO WAY.... But there is something different........

Then it came time to move into High School.... There is a school here, where the kids that plan to take The International Bacculuret Honors classes go. They are bussed, and this results in the fact that they lose out on after school things, like sports and club activities. So, the parents have to make up for this lose.

Basil has an American sister, that is also a High School Math teacher.... She is helpful in finding enrichment activities online.

Well, he is still studying Russian studies, Working on his music, ( took gold medals three years in his class of Classical Piano, with a Russian teacher) and holding a 4.+ average in American High school......

Spending summers at ... the  Jr. Collage and the Colorado School of Mines having moved up to Math classes and research teams........

He was accepted by 8 major universities in the Physics, Math and Science fields.. and Carnige-Mellon!  He chose Stanford and has just returned for his second year........ He will be 19 in November.

PROUD OF THIS KID... :)...You bet I am,  and of my other grandkids.... :)
The Math teacher is now a Capt. in the USAF....in intelligence, Her brother is a Marine recruiter ( twice to Iraq, and caught shapnel) The others are still too young to see where they are going....

As you know, we lost the one we raised, two years ago but she was a raising star.

But none of them has worked as hard to get where they are today, as my Russian born grandson.

Your little girls are real dolls!!!

Getting all of your sleep?
Title: Re: children
Post by: Simoni on March 04, 2009, 07:39:11 AM
Not much sleep around here.  Recovery time is when the little girl is asleep, which is between feedings.

The old dog, almost deaf, takes great interest in the little girl, staying by her in whatever room she is in.

The babies sharp loud high cries, unfortunately for dog, are in a range the dog can hear!  So as you can see, the dog sleeps when baby sleeps. ;D

These days will soon pass....and so will the coming months and years.

Saver them while they are here ... for the day will come much to soon when you will fervently wish you could hold .....Just one short moment in your hands.

These are truly gifts from God... Entrusted to us for a short while.

The goal is to have one a little bit  naughty....but not too naughty! An angel in training ... but still a child of this life.....and ours to ho;d and hug....

And one day they will leave with a smile and a wave.....and your heart will forever go with them. May they be strong mature adults contributing to society and their world.

One of the sweetest moments in life, is to rock a sleeping child and feel the warmth of love shared.....

Yes, Mamma D... months and years. In Russia we have saying "Маленькие детки - маленькие бедки" that means "Little children - small troubles"  :) My son will be 17 in March. Even he has never gave me so much troubles and I know he has good friends, every time when he goes to a rock concert that usually finishes very late or fishing with his friends of course I worry.  :)

October is a big month for us.  We celebrated four years together on October 5.

And later this month, our daughter will be eight months old.  That is 2/3 of a year old!

We had a baby sitter for the first time on Oct. 5, and enjoyed a nice dinner and movie.

Mama survived :-)

Jazzy,

From another thread I now understand your delight.  He is a fine wee one, precious indeed.   Enjoy the little prince, because as I mentioned I raised two boys, and they do get bigger.  They become young teenagers, watch the dreadful Jackass movie, and invent their own skits such as this one:

Thanks:) I think he does have my eyes:) that is so sweet that somebody else noted it as well:) I think he looks a lot like me:)It is funny though my other half thinks he looks like him and I see him as little me:))) I guess we look at him through our own perspective:)

He's absolutely gorgeous, Jazzy. And be glad you can each see a little of yourselves, in him. :) We have a two-month old and everyone we meet immediately comments that she looks exactly like dad. My wife is starting to roll her eyes whenever she hears it -- and it's no pleasure for me either, whenever someone says, "she looks just like you!" I can't help it but my mind immediately tries to imagine my daughter with a goatee and a little beer belly.

If it is any consolation to her, groov, tell her they do change over time.  Eventually, they look like themselves. :)

I will place some pictures soon, got to check them on the camera.

Our oldest has started the first phase of school, giving his mother some more time. Teachers of this age are a bit lost as the guy does not have a lot of experience in colouring or drawing (and pretends not to understand what they say) but does know how to count in 3 languages. Apart from that he has an incredible memory managing to repeat a song by hearing it two or three times, or to tell what will happen if the TV program is a re-run.

The youngest is now only starting to say some clear words, but regularly manages to amaze us. Started walking at 14 months, but within three weeks already seemed like he never did anything else. He has the remarkable ability to analyse and copy almost anything from us. Starting with when we show him a diaper, he runs to the changing place and assumes position. Where we to teach his brother stacking cubes for some time, this guy started without us ever remembering to show. Seeing hid brother drink from a cup, he manages to imitate the move. He could open a door, if only he was tall enough to reach the handle... And above all he has quite some physical strength. In the fight for toys with his brother, he often manages to hold on so tight that even we as parents have trouble. If he wats to see something above his head, he can just put his hands on the edge and pull himself up, hanging on his arms only.

The teacher told our oldes was stubborn. I warned her that the youngest, who looks so quiet in comaprison, is probably worse. If he wishes to go somewhere (like climbing op 16 steps of the stairs) the only way to change his mind is to block the entrance. Then if after 30 minutes the entrance is open due to getting something, it takes him 10 seconds to reach it and do what he was planning...

I have a question but I don't want to read all the previous posts and maybe find nothing.
My wife has a 27 year old daughter and I was wondering if anyone knows the visa wait from Russia for her. I saw yesterday from the Phillipines it was 23.5 years   :o

It depends on the Service Center where the petition would be filed. For example, in California SC it will be (in the right column petitions from that date are being in the process now)
I-130Petition for Alien RelativeU.S. citizen filing for an unmarried son or daughter over 2127 september 2007
I-130Petition for Alien RelativePermanent resident filling for an unmarried son or daughter over 217 mei 2010
I-130Petition for Alien RelativeU.S. citizen filing for a married son or daughter over 211 juni 2010
Other SC Processing Dates are to find here http://egov.uscis.gov/cris/processTimesDisplayInit.do (http://egov.uscis.gov/cris/processTimesDisplayInit.do)

After the approval of the I-130, petitions are being send it to the NVC where it will sit until the priority date is current

This table http://www.travel.state.gov/pdf/Cut-off_Dates_worldwide_online.pdf (http://www.travel.state.gov/pdf/Cut-off_Dates_worldwide_online.pdf) shows priority dates  (the date that the petition is properly filed) world wide (Russia stands not apart mentined like China or Phillipines, so i guess it should be included in world wide).
First preference (F1): Unmarried, adult sons and daughters of U.S. citizens (adult means 21 or older.)
Second Preference (2B):  Unmarried adult sons and daughters of permanent residents
Third Preference (F3): Married sons and daughters (any age) of U.S. citizens
So now visas are available for those who filed petitions before 15 February 2006 (first preference), before 1 May 2002 (third preference).
All waiting time sums up. Looks like 9-11 years if i'm not mistaken.

Thanks GQ,

We went over a lot of names..and actually my wife generally preferred western ones and they made up the bulk of her ideas and suggestions..
We did not have a name picked out until we saw her ... we had about 5 front runners and decided she would *fit* one of those  when we saw her first. :)
as far as middle name Ira liked nicole as a name,in general..and it seemed to flow. :)
My wife felt she'd have enough diminutive/sweet Russian nicknames around the house to call her regardless..

Our Erik. He's 3 years and 3 months now.
Today when I told him we're getting a new bathtub (new bathroom in construction), he wanted to go out to the garage and see it. I pulled away a little plastic from the transportation box, so he could have a look. He wanted to look at the big bathtub several times and then he hugged me and said: "Takk, pappa" (thank you dad). That really melts a daddy's heart  :-*

Yes Muzh, it's very important to show affection towards our loved ones. I'm always trying to steal kisses and hugs from Erik. It depends on his mood if he accept it or not and sometimes he smiles and waves his finger and say "not kiss" only hugs  :P

Moderately worried that he will be spoiled though, with things, and in this department my wife is even more liberal than me when he's in the shop and wants something. Hope we will be able later on when he understand the cost of things, to teach him about the cruel reality of wants vs. means.

With your little one Muzh, teach him to use a razor  ;)

Title: Re: children
Post by: Jumper on August 03, 2017, 07:21:54 AM
Thanks all.

Billyb, she's kind of a mix of tomboy princess, she picks all her own cloths to wear (diva about it), loves shoes (at 2 already obsessed with them ,and with  make up )won't let mom choose clothes, even the bantik(bow).lol
That pic is odd in that she picked tennis shoes,  very odd choice for her that day.
The flip side is she loves speed, fast rides at the fair, big slides, and yes motorcycles ,cars, atvs, firetrucks, concrete trucks, etc. She really likes excavators actually ,and keeps track of all the ones she sees, which is funny right?  Overall I hope she finds other interests than motorcycles though, too dangerous.

Pitbull, at this age,i think girls are easier.
Slightly more drama, but overall less rambunctious lol
I think that difficulty flips genders in the teen years. ;)

It is funny that she likes excavators. She may grow out of this phase though. When I was a kid I wanted to save the world the way superman did. I realized my abilities were limited and limited still today as I  have a hard time saving guys from scammers.  If you're ever in the Seattle area and your daughter is still fond of excavators send me a message and I'll let her operate one
