Hitler was already embroiled in a war with the British.
In June, 1941 the war with Britain had been in a stalemate for almost a year after the RAF had beaten the Luftwaffe by a narrow margin in the summer of 1940, nullifying Goering's assurances of air dominance over the Channel to allow a Nazi invasion.

IMO, it was not in Hitler's psychology to sit back, relax and enjoy his previous accomplishments, he still had grandiose dreams to fulfill ;).

I would say this is accurate, Sandro.

I have a book in my library titled The Unknown Hitler: His Private Life and Fortune

http://www.amazon.ca/Hitler-His-Private-Life-Fortune/dp/0915765632

Caveat: I don't consider it the historical authority regarding Hitler and focuses more on his private life, social, business and rise to power activities leading up to WW2.

However, (although not meant as a psychological workup) it does give some (and not complimentary by any means) insight into how the Hitler history knows came to be from his teenage years through to the war including some fairly interesting images and sketches.

Based on what is revealed about his private life I'd venture regardless of the historical/strategic circumstances leading up to WW2 and the eventual invasion of the USSR, as long as he was in charge, it was inevitable.

As an aside, for anyone who has an historical library this book is a good addition. It's not your run of the mill WW2 history read.

My only critique would be to me the narrative in places reads somewhat like a closing argument in a court case.

Stalin one wised up several weeks into the invasion. His initial orders to the front were to not provoke the invading Germans. As Bo hinted, he felt that he could come to a different outcome with Hitler as if it were all some misunderstanding.

The Nazi forces came a lot closer than 50 miles to Moscow.

The real turning back came not so much as the Battle of Kursk, but much closer to Moscow. The generals who turned back the Nazi tank forces close to Moscow had fallen out of favour with Stalin and as a result were wiped out of history books. Unfortunately, that complicated matters for the soldiers who had served under those generals as supposedly they also had ceased to exist--making it very difficult, and sometimes impossible, for surviving veterans to claim post-war benefits such as housing and pensions.

The Kursk battle, worthy as it was, became the dominating narrative. However in the 1970s the Soviets began to rehabilitate some of those forgotten generals, and still today the history is being rewritten to reflect what really happened.

One of those areas just recently receiving credit for its role in important tank battles is a hilly region between the towns of Klin and Dedenevo (near Dmitrov). The hills follow three strategic rivers: the Ikshey, Volgushev, and the Small Yakhromy. These are part of the great canal system linking the Baltic Sea to Moscow and were the site of very important battles for control of Moscow.

The famous tank battle that was primarily responsible for turning back German forces from Moscow had been banned from official history for decades. In the 1960s it reappeared, but with fake names for the generals and fake names/numbers for the units who fought. I visited there last summer accompanied by a Red Army historian (a Colonel in the Army) and the main monument to commemorate that vital tank battle has been corrected. The false names and Army units have been removed, and one can stand next to it and see where a crew had recently inscribed the names of the correct generals, and the correct Red Army units, on the granite.
