Good photo essay of a dead sub

That looks like it has never had any maintenance since it was commissioned!

Yeah--it is the "mighty" Russian military machine that the puny one wants to take on the world with.

The nonsense sold to Russians about capability. Even yesterday 30 plus more Russian regulars were killed  not complying with the "ceasefire". And yes-- they were most probably lost and on vacation near Mauripol-- err that is in Ukraine btw.
Seriously-- the puny one is really likely to get his legs chopped off in the near future.
SLAVA UKRAYINI  ! HEROYAM SLAVA!!!!

Speaking of Russian submarines. The Swedes are apparently closing in on a reportedly damaged Russian submarine which was lurking off of Stockholm...

Moscow is denying it, of course...

Great.  Just what the World needs.  Old submarines with enough nuclear waste on them for probably thousands of dirty bombs, and we've got to trust Russia to properly handle it (at a projected cost of $2.2 Billion).

This reminds me of the 1981 Soviet sub that ran aground in Sweden. History repeats itself.

Proving yet again that Soviets and Russians in general are not very good liars:

"The Captain of U-137 claimed that the gyro compass of the ship did not work properly which had lead the captain to believe he was navigating in waters off Stolpe Banks along the Polish coast and that he was surprised to have found himself on a rock in the Swedish Naval station Karlskrona.

The submarine also carried a man with a considerably higher rank than the Captain and the man presented himself as passenger and navigation expert. The political officer onboard also had his own version and told the Swedish commission that the U-boat thought they were navigating around the island of Bornholm in Denmark!

When the Swedish interrogating officer left the boat he stumbled over rolls of very well made and very detailed Russian charts covering the Navy Station in Karlskrona and the neighbouring waters.

Just the right charts to have onboard when you are sailing in Poland!"

Now will be a very good time for the Swedish navy to run some exercises of dropping live depth charges in the area! :devilish:

I suspect Putin would rather sacrifice the crew of the crippled sub rather than go through the humiliation of admitting it was a Russian sub and asking the Swedes help in salvaging the sub.

Question is: does this Russian sub captain having standing orders to self destruct the sub if discovery by the enemy becomes inevitable?

Of course there are also a couple other possibilities.  Since the reports are based solely on radio signals, it could also be just a Russian provocation to evaluate the response of Sweden.   Also, could be a diversion so that the world is not watching his other nefarious activities somewhere else.

Hopefully the Swedes will make sonar or visual contact soon.

Unlikely. At the end of the day Sweden is not at war with Russia. If they (Swedes) get too close buddy comrade sub commander will probably surface (if he can) and make some excuse along the lines of "We were just sailing along and saw all the commotion, thought we'd drop by and take a look. Oh yeah, we're damaged because your surface skimmers were being aggressive".

Moscow will embellish the lie similar to MH17, NATO freaks out, Swedes stamp their feet, U.S. sends an official diplomatic tsk, tsk, boat and crew are eventually returned to the motherland and the great game continues.

Anyone interested in how the vaunted Russian Sub fleet is getting around these days?  :P ...

I think they are already dead.

I sincerely hope not, otherwise, that's more names added to the list of Russian lives sacrificed in the name of Moscow's imperialist ambitions. :-[

If this is the case...

..."The Svenska Dagbladet newspaper said Sweden had begun a search after a distress signal in Russian was detected on an emergency frequency on Thursday evening.

Encrypted radio traffic from a point in the Stockholm archipelago and Kaliningrad was picked up later as well.

Another signal was intercepted on Friday night and Swedish intelligence was able to pinpoint the locations of the participants. One was in the waters off Stockholm, while the other could be traced to Kaliningrad, the port that is the home of Russia's Baltic Sea fleet"....

...Then Moscow should have put out an immediate request for assistance to the Swedish government.

They can't be, LT, because they aren't even there!  At least, that's what the Russians are saying...

The men on the Kursk lived for as much as 10 days more probable that they lived 4 days in compartments 8 & 9.  They just failed or didn't want to rescue them.  We don't know what damage the sub underwent, but like the Kursk, these are relatively shallow waters.  The Kursk was only 300 feet below the surface.  Presumably the ship donutting around Swedish waters is communicating with or may even be rescuing them.  Correct me if I am wrong, but Victor class submarines are nuclear so abandoning ship with or without the crew would leave nuclear material in sovereign waters.  Some twitter commentators are encouraging the Swedes to send down depth chargers.

Not an act of war to drop depth charges in your own territorial waters so there is nothing the Russians can do if the Swedes decides to try this stunt. This will either force Putin to sacrifice the disabled sub or admit its existence and beg the Swedes to stop.

It's the optics of dropping depth charges on a foreign submarine in distress even if they're in Swedish waters. I'm not saying it's out of the realm of possibly only that it's unlikely. Besides, the Swedes seem to have a adopted more of a rescue operation/intelligence gathering stance than a combat stance with this search.

The Russians are now suggesting it's a Dutch submarine. Give it a few days and they'll be suggesting it was the Americans...

Sweden widens 'foreign activity' hunt off Stockholm

..."Russia's defence ministry denied any "irregular situation" involving its ships. It said a Dutch submarine might have triggered Sweden's alert, after carrying out exercises in the area.

But this theory has been dismissed by the Dutch defence ministry.

"It was definitely not a Dutch submarine," a ministry spokeswoman in The Hague told the BBC."...
