It does sound as if your wife was charged with a criminal offense.  If that's the case, I think you should find the best lawyer in the area (if it is an impaired driving offense, find a lawyer that specializes in those), pay him/her, and let that lawyer find an interpreter.  If the charge is theft, hire a psychologist for an assessment for post partum depression, with secondary factors of moving to a foreign country, being unemployed, living in relative poverty, etc.  That does have an impact on judges, particularly, I assume, in a more progressive state, such as New York.

She needs to fight to be acquited, if that is possible.  A criminal offense could bar her from citizenship, or at the very least, slow that process considerably.  She would also be barred from entering other countries.  I know as a fact that Canada bars those convicted of impaired driving from entering the country.

After the fall of communism, the biggest mistake Boris Yeltsin's regime made was not to disband the KGB altogether. Instead it changed its name to the FSB and, to many observers, morphed into a gangster organisation, eventually headed by master criminal Vladimir Putin. - Gerard Batten

In the link below is a bunch of NY laws including vehicle and traffic. You might review what you need and see if there was a process not followed correctly by the police leading up to the charge. She may be able to get off on a technicality. A person or their attorney needs to cite to the judge the codes/statutes that were violated. A prosecutor may drop the case before it gets to a judge if he/she realizes you're right and going to win.

Fund the audits, spread the word and educate people, write your politicians and other elected officials. Stay active in the fight to save our country. Over 220 generals and admirals say we are in a fight for our survival like no other time since 1776.

I got this all cleaned up... I actually expect the state police to file charges against a small town cop over this crap .  We got the local DA to look into everything, they forwarded it to the head of the troop B to investigate and I got Senator Kristian Gillibrand office ready to look into shit also... Their office has a special immigrant rights group...
