Do you have $150,000 just sitting as you wait for a long term investment opportunity?

I searched around and best deal I could find was at Capital One Bank.

You have to use a special code 'save1000' which takes a lot of work to find on the Internet.

Go to capitalone.com/save1000

Open savings account before December 31, 2019 and deposit $150,000.

You will receive a bonus of $1,000.00 if you leave the money intact for 90 days, and earn 1.70% annual interest rate.

Receiving $1000 off $150,000 after 90 days happens at a 2.67% interest rate. Not spectacular but something is better than nothing if one currently has $150,000 stored under their mattress.

Yes, the bonus is at an annualized interest rate of 2.67.
But also get the regular 1.70 interest rate.
So for these first 90 days, the combined earnings rate is 4.47%

Note:  I am not saying this is a great deal for a long term investment.

However, it is about the best thing around for idle cash awaiting further long term investment.

I have already completed this investment; but if anyone knows of something better, please let me know.

Again . . . short term investment with no loss of principal possibilities.

Don't even think of BitCoin and the like.

the current Fed Discount Rate is 2.25% so banks with good credit can do short term borrowing direct from the fed at this rate...
if a depositor puts 1 million into long term savings in a bank, this shows up as deposit reserve that the bank can borrow against from the Fed at the "Discount Window"!
basically the bank can loan the million dollar deposit out to college students at 7.5%
and THEN borrow a half million against the deposit at 2.25% and loan that out as well...
then they can package the loans into a tranche and sell it...
and pay themselves a mega bonus
and by the time it all crashes they sold everything and now own the third largest coffee plantation in Brazil!
I know this dewd, but I won't say his name...

Wife and I celebrated by going to Dentist !!

She has been complaining about bad pain in upper back jaw for some days.
So yesterday, over her resistance, I called to make appointment for her.
Was able to schedule regular cleaning for myself at same time.

This morning she said pain had subsided and wanted to cancel.
But I refused.
X-rays found nothing but Dentist suspected something was wrong with a root canal she had done in Ukraine.
So he referred and scheduled her for visit to Endodontist next week.

I see a bill for about $3,000.00 on the near horizon.

Welcome to the wonderful world of FSUW teeth.

OK Billy B . . . you know what is coming for you.

Oh yes . . . and Merry Orthodox Christmas Day.

I have been getting emails from PayPal for last few weeks wanting me to get their CC.
It has 2% rebates on all purchases and 4% rebates for first 90 days.
So finally got it and now will be our primary card.

Our existing cards are from Chase and Capital One which have 1.5% rebates.

Friend of mine presented his CC which has $50,000 limit to buy new car after he had gotten them down in price to around Dealers Cost + $100.  Note: They still get rebates from manufacturers, so make more than $100.

They refused, as would have to pay Visa something like 3% on $45,000 ($1,350) or so.

This violates the dealer's agreement with Visa (they are not supposed to refuse use of Visa for anything) but actually nothing he could do about it.  They finally agreed to let him put $10,000 on the CC and he gave check for the balance.

I got the Paypal Credit card and they allow me to collect 2% cashback once a month and they put it into the Paypal account for me to use or transfer to the bank. I got the Capital One Quicksilver card and can collect the 1.5% cashback a day or two after every purchase.

Epiphany based on Gregorian calendar, was January 19, 2020

Wife's relative in Ireland, along with his wife, went to Irish Sea in early morning, got naked (no one else was around) and dunked themselves in the frigid water 3 times.

My wife asked if we might do that in a future year.

NOT

Went to Endodontist.

Was a very personable guy and seemed to be very competent 40ish.

He showed the X-rays on large screen and indicated areas around two upper back teeth just in front of wisdom tooth (that had previous root canals in Ukraine) where infection was present.

Said two options:
1) redo root canals, refill, etc.  Around $2,000 for each.
2) pull teeth, put in posts and later glue artificial teeth to posts.  Around $3,500 each.

Pain has subsided now (don't know why, if infection still there), so wife told him she would wait to make decision.

After we left, wife told me she could get posts and teeth for $250 each in Ukraine, so she will do that starting with her usual trip to Ukraine this summer.
However, she said there is a 6 month wait between posts and attaching artificial teeth.

That latter situation will cause a big hassle given her PhD program, winter weather, etc. . . . but I didn't bring that issue up.

And, if pain comes back big time before summer . . . . !! ??

I know an old guy that went to Vietnam and had all his teeth pulled and had his whole mouth replaced with implants within a month and a half. He used Western trained doctors using Western methods and they cater to Westerners on medical tourism who want the job done right and much cheaper than they charge back home. I can't remember what he paid.

Wife and I have been watching "Great Minds of the Western Intellectual Tradition, 3rd Edition" from the Great Courses series.  84 lectures in total and we watch one every few days or so.

Interesting that some of the framework of communism was first laid out (Republic) by Plato 428 - 348 BC.

Then more flesh was provided by Sir Thomas More 1478 - 1535.

More provided his thoughts in a whimsical manner (Utopia) in an attempt to not anger the King.

More was nevertheless executed by Henry VIII, but not for this reason.

Interesting also that some of the framework of capitalism was laid out (Politics) by Plato's student Aristotle 384 - 322 BC.

Quite a comeback by Kansas City.

I had my doubts if they could come back from 10 points down with less than 10 minutes to go; but they did it.

I think you missed the initial slur - that resulted in a return of petulance

No, you missed the initial slur.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi broke congressional tradition by introducing President Donald Trump as only "the president of the United States."

Previous House speakers have introduced the sitting commander in chief by saying they had the "high privilege and distinct honor of presenting to you the president of the United States."

Pelosi gave President George W. Bush the full introduction in the 2007 State of the Union address.

We were discussing this in another thread, but I forgot where.

I did google search and found the method most often recommended was to soak the cleaned fish in milk for 20 minutes. then rinse off and dry.

The casein in milk binds to the fishy smell particles in fish and then is rinsed away.

I tried this today with my portion of haddock and it did work.
Haddock was one of the least fishy tasting anyway, so don't know how this would work with another type.

Wife is not bothered at all by fishy taste of most any type of fish.

Probably got locked. Growing up in the south we had a fish we called Mudfish. It tasted awful to me and I couldn't eat it as a fish but my grandmother would soak it in buttermilk and make patties out of it with onions and cornmeal and it was mildly palatable. It was a carp. We used buttermilk to soak a lot of wild game and it took the gamey taste out of most anything

The History Buffs thread.

Fresh fish doesn't have a fishy smell, but that freshness lasts only hours.

Lemon will also get rid of that smell.
