Russia promises to respond....Lavrov ... The spiral downwards continues ... not good for those with RU / US relatives / friends or loved ones ( potential or otherwise ) and I'm scared it will spread to other western nations ((

USA orders Russia to close it's consulate in SF and other facilities in America. Going to be hard for guys seeking love to get tourist visas to visit their women and for couples to visit Russian orphanages to adopt children. Sex tourists will also be affected and will have to get their sex somewhere else.

I hope that Russia responds by closing one US consulate. Forget about Trump, he's powerless. The United States of Sanctions wants only enemies and minions (the Powers that be, not most folks, mind you).

No, it wasn't. The US started this under Obama by seizing Russian property in USA. Russia waited several months, did nothing, to see if Trump would reverse it, which he didn't as he's politically castrated. So then Russia told the US to cut Down staff at their embassy to the number that is Equal to what the Russian embassy in the US has. If anything, Russia is very careful and proper here. Washington is not.
Russia gave the US more than a month to make the cuts, while the US here gives Russia two (2) days! This is very telling.

1. RU interfered with US elections
2. Obama took away RU playground

3. Congress enacted sanctions because Trump would not man up and accept that RU interfered with elections, even wanted to give RU back their playground
4. RU decreased allowed number of US Embassy folks to equal theirs in US and took away their playground.

5. US responds with this latest action.

Russia invades Ukraine. America applies sanctions. Russia messes with America's elections, America applies sanctions. Russia cuts staff at American Embassies and consulates in Russia, America cuts staff of Russian's at their embassies and consulates. Parity, but Russia will take the bigger financial hit. Russia will most likely have to make the first move to normalize relations.....or they can just say "Screw it, we'll keep doing things that piss off America and finish off Ukraine and help Assad kill more Syrians.

Persons who usually live in Russia, but who can not apply for a visa in the US in a timely manner, can apply in Kiev. Applicants are not required to be residents of Ukraine to obtain a visa at the US Embassy in Kiev, but must physically be in Ukraine at the time of applying for a visa and obtaining a visa, as we can not receive applications from citizens by mail while they are outside Ukraine. All applicants must indicate the local address in Ukraine - the address of the hotel, relatives, office - during the recording for the interview. Please note that the applicant or his representative must pay a visa fee to Raiffeisen Bank in Ukraine prior to the appointment of the visa interview. If the visa is approved, the issuance of a passport is possible only within Ukraine.

This is not 'news' as the option to apply from Ukraine has been available for some considerable time.
Sadly, the 'Moskals' tag means that many Russians will not go to Ukraine ..During our road trip in November - we did a HUGE detour to miss Ukraine - as my 'co-driver' - Russian - was not happy to risk entering Ukraine and traversing.
Whether his fear was justified - or not - he did not want to try ((
