Ivano-Frankovsk?
« on: October 07, 2011, 10:41:37 AM »
Wondering if anyone has traveled to, or more particularly flown to, Ivano-Frankovsk, Ukraine.
Have never been to that airport.

If you have anything regarding a heads-up, pointers, etc., it would be appreciated.  Will be going on to Chernovtsy from there.  No flights (other than from Romania via Carpatair) going to Chernovtsy or I would most happily do that instead.  And yes, ruled out a train from Kiev.  I know some folks love it, but it's not for me.  Not up for the 9 hour trip by car either.

Thanks.

Well then! the most obvious choice for you would be to go by BUS!  >:D

Sorry, I don't have any info on flights for you.  The town is (as you know) in the western part of Ukraine which actually is somewhat different than the Eastern part. It's a pretty cool place.  We only drove through it without spending much time there on our honeymoon trip, but I can say there there were lovelies a plenty all over the place.  You'll encounter more folks who speak Ukrainian as well as see religious shrines (not sure what they're called) all over the place - and it seems that those in the west take superstitions much more seriously too.

Wish I had more to tell you about it.  Hopefully others who have spent more time there and have flown there will show up and chime in.  I think you'll definitely enjoy the city though.

XMan, although it's been a few years, I have been able to fly several times from Kiev to Chernovtsy.   Some very memorable flights I might add.  Maybe they have sense cancelled these flights.  What sources are you using to help you determine if their are flights to Chernovsty.

Dropped them in March of this year, it seems.
I used to fly in on a SAAB turboprop and it was fine, actually.
Checked every airline that operates in Ukraine.  Also had a friend in Ukraine call the airport.  Only one flight per day coming in, one leaving, and that is Carpatair.
They are doing a lot of construction at the airport, supposedly hoping to make it an International one.  A little hard for me to believe, having flown in and out of it several times.

Maybe they did stop these flights in March.  Although I will say on all my flights the plane was fairly full.

And someone is thinking about making Chernovsty an International airport?  Hard to believe.

I recall one morning having a 7:15am flight out of Chernovsty to Kiev. Get to the airport at 6:30am.  Mistake.  The front door to the airport was locked, locked until 7am.  At 7am they unlocked the door to let us in, board the flight.  We had to carry our own luggage onto to tarmac and load our luggage onto the plane.

My same experience, regarding the locked airport.
When I landed there last February we de-planed and waited outside for our luggage.  The airport building was locked already (about 10:00 p.m., flight delayed), so I walked around the outside of it (along with the other passengers)hauling my luggage through the ice / snow.  Funny.
So yes, International Airport seems far fetched.  But the flights are, for now, history.  I cannot say my flights were full, but there certainly seemed to be enough passengers to make it worthwhile in September 2010 and February 2011.  But, I haven't seen the books, so who knows.
One REALLY has to want to get to Chernovtsy to make it happen.  Far easier to get to a number of other cities.

Trains, arrange a car/driver or fly through Kyiv.
Pick and choose carefully among the advice offered and consider the source carefully. PM, Skype or email if you care to chat or discuss

Xman,

Very familar with this area. Wifey is from Zaricha and went to University in Ivano and lived in Chernivtsi for a long time.  Just flew into Ivano on August 5th from Kyiv.  Only issue is that there are basically only two flights per day from Kyiv.

I flew out of Chicago and had to wait in Kyiv for about 7 hours for the flight to Ivano - I think it departed at 8:05 PM and got into Ivano at about 10 PM.

Airport in Ivano is very small.  Has a small cafe that is closed in the evening.  Very easy to navigate.

To get to Chernovitsi, you will need to either take a bus or private car. Must pass through Kolomia and then down to Chernovitsi. Kolomia is about 40 minutes from Ivano and then about another 2 hours to Chernovitsi.

Managed a private car, not too bad of a trip (2.5 hours) from I-F to Chernovtsy.
