Ukraine World Cup
« Reply #425 on: April 27, 2015, 10:39:01 AM »
They were going to have the world cup in Ukraine and Poland that year so
I took a photo of the new Dnepropetrovsk soccer/football stadium. I didn't
know this was the back until later.

I've ran across these toilets a number of times. I've never had to use
when while suffering Montezuma's revenge but I shudder to think about it.

At least it has a flush button and looks clean, although that hole would require some seriously good aiming!  This is why I recommend getting your defecation out of the way before you leave your apartment or hotel room each day.  You never know WHAT sort of public conveniences may await your urgent distress!  :mooning:

Funny I only seen one of these types of toilets in my travels.
What made it funny, is it was the only one I had to pay for.
It was outside the restaurant, around back, a kind old Babuska
was there tending the door, I think it was 5 grv. :D
Common sense, Is not so common!

Funny I only seen one of these types of toilets in my travels.

You are SO lucky!  I can't remember seeing any that looked anywhere near this clean or well-maintained - they were usually badly stained (yellow, of course), sometimes with part of the porcelain broken, and normally with "doors" that provided no privacy at all!  I couldn't believe that Sochi Railway Station had only this type of toilet for the general (male) public - at least their "invalids" toilet had a standard bowl and seat.

This was at a Pizza place and if you look closely at the photo at the right
it even had a mostly full roll the non-abrasive white toilet paper rather
than being empty or the brown corrugated, solvent impregnated, scouring
USSR paper.

WARNING: Bill attempts to pass along a Russian language hack.

In the old days there used to be a little bubble on the carbonated water to
let you know you were getting carbonated but they mixed things up lately
recently to confuse people or possibly to sell more water when somebody
came home with the wrong thing.

The first bottle is carbonated it says Gasovanya.  Russian is tricky because they
use different symbols for a letter like we do in print or in cursive. The backward
S is a G,

The second bottle is still or no gas.  "He" in Ruskiy doesn't relate to that gas that
makes your voice sound funny after breathing it from balloons. He = Ne and
ne = no or not. So He on a water bottle usually means no gas.

The Magic Closet
« Reply #434 on: April 28, 2015, 08:24:53 AM »
While in Dnpropetrovsk I had a what I call a magic closet.

I would take off my dirty clothes and toss them on the floor in the closet.
Then later I would find them suspended on ropes strung across the room
which also made very effective neck ringers if you are anywhere nears as
tall as I am. Then later I would find those very same clothes pressed and
folded or on hangers in the same closet.

You might ask yourself how is this magic? The answer is that my apartment
didn't have a washer or a dryer in it. It did have an iron.

My GF would take the dirty clothes to her apartment across the city on a minibus
then lug the wet clothes back on another minibus in freezing weather then string
them up on various ropes and devices that she engineered for drying. After that
she would iron and fold or hang up the clothes.

Everything got washed, including the curtains, the bedding and anything else that
stayed in one spot long enough.

If you look through the clothes you can see that I managed to find the smallest and
most sparse evergreen tree to act as our New Year tree.

Trippin in Dnepropetrovsk and finding Taras Shevchenko
« Reply #435 on: April 28, 2015, 08:42:47 AM »
During the day we would walk around the city and see the parks, museums
and do what I call smelling the roses. There was one very cold and windy park
near the river with a giant statue of Taras Shevchenko. If you look at the bottom
left hand corner of the photo you can see me looking up at the statue.

Taras Shevchenko is Ukraine's most famous and one of the most loved
poets. His poems were in Ukrainian, not Russian and many say his poetry captures
the Ukrainian spirit.

The Testament

Dig my grave and raise my barrow
By the Dnieper-side
In Ukraina, my own land,
A fair land and wide.
I will lie and watch the cornfields,
Listen through the years
To the river voices roaring,
Roaring in my ears.

When I hear the call
Of the racing flood,
Loud with hated blood,
I will leave them all,
Fields and hills; and force my way
Right up to the Throne
Where God sits alone;
Clasp His feet and pray…
But till that day
What is God to me?

Bury me, be done with me,
Rise and break your chain,
Water your new liberty
With blood for rain.
Then, in the mighty family
Of all men that are free,
May be sometimes, very softly
You will speak of me?

Taras Shevchenko

One correction - Shevchenko did write poems in Russian, and in Polish, in addition to Ukrainian.  He was a serf, and was sent to St. Petersburg to study by his owner, as he was a talented artist (as in painter).  In St. Petersburg, he met a group of artists who admired his artistic talent, and Karl Bruillov auctioned a painting to buy Shevchenko's freedom.

Initially, Shevchenko's Ukrainian language poetry was written with Latin letters.  After living in St. Petersburg, he started using the Cyrillic alphabet.  His poetry generally is not well translated, and his later poems are very complex.

Google "Shevchenko art Aral", to see his best art, when he was in the army in Aral.  He was sent there as a punishment, and the solitude is evident in all his pieces.  At that time, he was also under surveillance.

After the fall of communism, the biggest mistake Boris Yeltsin's regime made was not to disband the KGB altogether. Instead it changed its name to the FSB and, to many observers, morphed into a gangster organisation, eventually headed by master criminal Vladimir Putin. - Gerard Batten

Moving, spiritual, and very appropriate poetry for today's beleaguered, assaulted, and suffering Ukraina, as it defends itself against the Putinist imperial aggression.

Excellent addition to my trip report. I highly recommend trying to learn something about
the people, places, language, culture and history you visit especially when you are visiting
a girl in her city.

I wrote about the Odessa trip a few years ago. I just hadn't posted
about it here. I thought that maybe putting all the TR's in one spot
would be helpful rather than scattered all over the internet.

The Kiev trip, I hadn't written about before so that's coming out of
the fuzzy/cobweb filled area of my brain.

I deleted all the photos off my hard drive quite some time ago. Unless the photo
of the bikini clad poppa belongs to your Sister, Daughter or Mother the photo must go!

I knew that I was ignoring the little voice in my head, it was talking to
me telling me things weren't ok. I knew it, I was just ignoring it.

After every trip to the FSU I spent quite a bit of time both analyzing
what I did right, what I did wrong and how to improve next time.
The only way to do that was to be brutally honest with myself. I think
the most important thing that I learned in all searching and travels
was learned in this first trip was

To break it off and move on. Sure you might have a lot of\
emotions, desires, efforts and hope tied up in this one girl, but
if it's not there today, it's not going to be there tomorrow. You are
just wasting the time that you could be spending finding your true
love.

Don't waste another minute with little Miss cold heart Hot Nogi/popka

Udachi!

Bill
:clapping:
Bill i think to be persistent and what you are saying in this post are two of the MAIN factors of the success
"Je glissais through the paper wall, an angel in the hand, s taboy. I lay on the floor, surgi des chants de Maldoror, je mix l'intégrale de mes nuits de crystal, i belong to the festival.

I was a California boy back during this trip and was freezing during the
trips to the park by the river. We did visit the zoo, but it was heart breaking
to see. I couldn't bring myself to take any photos of the poor animals there.
They were dirty, and had loaves of bread to eat and skinny. The bears looked
as if their coats were for a larger animal.

The goats looked to be having a good ole time but the rest of the animals looked
very pathetic.

The closer to the river the colder the wind

There is this cute little church that you had to take the bridge to get to.
My fuzzy brain tells me it was called Monastery Island, but Google tells
me it's Monastic Island. Maybe somebody with better recollection can
tell us more about it.

Was founded by Byzantine monks

Here is a photo of the train bridge that crosses the river. I took the photo partially
because of the dichotomy between the freezing weather and the model on the billboard
who is glistening with sweat, plus I like bridges.

If you look on the railing of the bridge you will see padlocks. The Monastery Island
church is a very popular attraction for young couples to get married. The tradition
is that the lovers put their names on the locks then lock them onto the bridge railing
and as long as the lock remains locked the couple will be together.

Then they throw the key into the river. While I was there I didn't see a single forlorn
young man or woman in the water searching for the key.

With New Years arriving we went to the market and gathered a frightening
collection of food. It was frightening because I carried it all over the city of
Dnepropetrovsk. My GF said that the market in Dnepropetrovsk was the
largest in Ukraine. I mentioned that Odessa also had a large market possibly
even larger and I was shut down for mentioning such a falsehood  ;D

While walking through the market my GF would sample, touch and taste nearly
everything. She sampled a half dozen pomegranates before selecting several and
everything was out in the open including raw meat and fish and all of which was
touched by hundreds.

While in the market you pay for each item from each table separately then if you want a
bag to carry it in you must pay for the bag (they call it a packet)

That "tradition" developed from a novel,  Federico Moccia's bestseller Ho Voglia di Te (I Want You).  Putting locks on a bridge in Soviet times would have landed the newlyweds in jail for hooliganism.

Meat handling was a bit scary by Western standards, but the fish was the scariest
by far. It was a limp, fishy smelling, oily, slickery fishy fish. When we took it home
she poured me a piva (beer) pulled out a knife and skinned the rascal right on the
table and took a hunk of it with her knife and made me eat it raw (the piva helped).

For those about to eat something skip the next paragraph.

Yep, I ate about a third of some kind of slightly smoked but raw, chewy
oily fish. Then something inside me started to rumble. I could feel my
bowels turning to apple sauce. I didn't get full blown Montezuma's revenge
just his less violent but still unfriendly cousin.

I had eaten enough in my book to get at least a medal of some sort. I refused to
