Incidentally, street, strasse, etc. all derive from the Latin designation of a paved road (via strata), so called because it consisted of layers of different materials:

Just caught this Sandro43.   :offtopic:

My, that takes me back to junior school, through which, in the old days, it was not possible to pass without drawing this cross-section in your work-book.  I know it's a European thing (beneath the 55th parallel), but these roads around England lie directly beneath most of our A-class roads (main roads before motorways/interstates/autostrada etc.).

We didn't have basalt though, mostly limestone and millstone grit I suspect.  I guess the photo is Pompeii.  Looks as though they never got the chance to use them.

Incidentally, whats a 'fossa'?  My local Roman road was the magnificent 'Fosse Way' (A37).

Not a coincidence, the same happens almost everywhere Roman Ways were laid out, why waste time designing a different route when the old one served well for centuries ;)?

Furthermore, main roads always attract urbanisation, so what was built initially for Roman military convenience to move soldiers, soon would become a civilian asset to move common people and merchandise.

Yes it is from Pompeii, and they did use it for some time though, since the town was finally annexed by the Romans in 80BC and Vesuvio's eruption was a century later, in 79AD.

Below is a recent photo of Via Appia a few miles SW of Rome, and you can see that its basalt summun dorsum is still in good condition after 2,000+ years.

As I explained earlier, fossa means pit/trench, fosse is a French variant with the same meaning.

So, Mr. JuanQueridoVerde, where did you learn salsa?
I can understand Moon Goddess because I know UA ladies love it and seen them dance to it at every opportunity.
What say you?
I learned salsa with an Asian gal I met at Shooters in the Flats (Cleveland).  If you know swing and chacha,
then salsa is easy.  We learned 20 moves from a couple of Jose DeCamps and Jami Josephson instructional videos.

Whenever we have a RWD social gathering, it would be a joy tio have a danceoff between JohnDearGreen and Muzh.  JDG knows 20 moves and Muzh knows untold number of Latin dances.

JDG, you salsa dance to country music? You can't salsa without trumpets, timbales and maracas.  ;) I suppose country singers have access to a cowbell.

Untold number?  Guess we will have to battle in neutral territory and play some blues music...
But first I will need to lose 10 pounds so I can fit into my tight pants.

I am not certain that the Muzh can fit into his either.  You two guys are married to FSUW and have been consuming copious amounts of smetana, salo and blini. :)

I just ran across one of the best music videos I have ever seen.  It's well worth watching till the end.

A tragic loss indeed.  Her voice was one of the best ever.

I found her song "I Will Always Love You" so haunting.  After hearing it for the first time, it lingered in my mind for weeks.  It is one of my RW's favorite songs.

Music will not stop.  It just gets better and better.  Many giants of music have died much earlier than Whitney, only to have a newcomer take center stage.

Today we have Adele.  Adele's voice is excellent, and while it does not match Whiney's, it comes close.  Add that to her exceptional lyrics, mostly written by herself, and we have "magic."   In contrast  "I Will Always Love You" was a cover.

I suppose being one of the old time classic rock and rollers, I was never a Whitney fan. Obviously, she was talented but just not my genre. I had never even heard of Adele until the Grammys. I was very impressed and want to hear more.

Boy, that was shocking!

I grew up with those songs. I had all their LPs.

RIP Davey Jones.

Dear John Green,
Thank you very much indeed for the song!!!  :)
Yes, I recently turned 30.   With much  fanfare.  ;D      Had a great celebration in this country, and then spent some unforgettable days in GB.

You know, it’s not  a burden, at all,  being a member of the over 30 (40, etc) team  if a woman is ready  to embrace her 30s as well as the new decades when they arrive.

TRUST ME, PLEASE :D
