John's Father in Law
« Reply #1225 on: March 13, 2022, 02:58:43 PM »
My FiL has escaped to Poland.
His wife is already in the US visiting with their daughter ( married to a US citizen). She had gone to visit before the war started.
He had a visa interview scheduled before Covid happened which was kicked down the road several times with the latest slot for sometime later in the year.

Unfortunately he will not be able to apply for a non immigrant visa now as he will be unable to prove he will return to Ukraine now.
His daughter could sponsor an immigrant visa but who knows how long that will take.

Between a rock and a hard place now.

John, how about having him go to Ireland.
Then you or your wife goes to Ireland to transport him.
With the open borders to Northern Ireland and Great Britain, he could be with you.
A beautiful woman is pleasant to look at, but it is easier to live with a pleasant acting one.

Ireland has taken in 5,500 Ukrainian refugees so far.

The UK has taken in 1,000 Ukrainian refugees so far.

The UK Government has asked people here to take Ukrainian refugees into their homes, if they have sufficient space, for a minimum period of 6 months, and so far 20,000 households have said they will take them.

As a thank you the UK Government will be giving those households £350 a month .

Hardly "shunning " Ukrainian refugees.

I like The Guardian. I also like The Telegraph.
After the fall of communism, the biggest mistake Boris Yeltsin's regime made was not to disband the KGB altogether. Instead it changed its name to the FSB and, to many observers, morphed into a gangster organisation, eventually headed by master criminal Vladimir Putin. - Gerard Batten

OK, I need educating.  :-)
But doubt if I will remember the leaning of UK newspapers . . . for more than an hour.

All major USA newspapers are left-wing . . . but not anti-government.
The more government the better.

Even the Wall Street Journal is only middle of the road.  Not pro-business and right leaning as in earlier years.

Right of center newspapers can mostly be found in smaller inland cities.
Look for the Red states.
And even then they must be independent . . . not owned by a chain.

Another Ukrainian woman whose husband is a millionaire (maybe multiple) is now in Ireland.  She was not a very nice person in Ukraine.

She has been complaining about the free accommodations she accepted as not being up to her standards.

A local private school said her child could attend free.
The other Ukrainians known to my wife told her she must pay since she can easily do so.  But she has refused.

Local citizens brought large amounts of food to my wife's relatives when they knew extra people arrived from Ukraine.
But this relative refused the food saying it should go to those who are in much more unfortunate circumstances.

But the millionaire wife took the free food.

Unfortunately, I am not in the UK so he can’t be with us. Even if we were, crossing over the border, while possible, does not offer a long term solution.

4000 Visa's have now been issued by the UK to Ukrainian refugees.

21 children with severe Cancer have now arrived in the UK from Ukraine for treatment .

Really nice to see all the Ukrainians being spoken to in Ukraine are saying thank you so much and how appreciative they are of the support and help being given to them by the UK since before and during the Russian invasion of their country.

We're the Ukrainians second favourite country now for a reason  :)

I’ve been in touch with the US authorities.

No easy answers, unfortunately.
It seems the US is not being particularly flexible in respect of UKR refugees.

Also, what are the Canadians doing?

I suppose they are doing better because I know someone who has just landed there.

Canada hasn't put a limit on the number of refugees it will take.  It is processing them from Warsaw, currently.

For those with family in Canada, the process is fast tracked - as little as a week to get a two year visa.  That's because no economic support is required from the Canadian government of non relative sponsors.  The two year visas will be reconsidered when the time comes.

Something sounds off here.

Did you mean to say 'relative sponsors' rather than 'non relative sponsors?'

Statements of Russian Mothers, Wives and Girlfriends
« Reply #1247 on: March 20, 2022, 09:16:20 AM »
Wife is on websites where there are played telephone calls between Russian soldiers in Ukraine and their supposedly loved ones back in Russia.

When Ukraine captures Russian soldiers, they have them call their Mothers to tell of their situation.

One Russian asks his Mother to contact all the military commanders she can to try to get him back to Russia and for her to go to streets to protest the War.

Mother replies:  "It is too dangerous for me to do.  It would be better for our family if you were dead rather than captured."

In intercepted phone calls between Russian soldiers and their wives/girlfriends, the soldiers tell of breaking into shops and homes and stealing watches, rings, etc.

Some of the wives/girlfriends respond with words such as:  "Great news.  Please send us these items before you are killed."

In another exchange Russian soldier said: I could get you some gold rings but I would have to take them from dead bodies.  Would you accept such?  Woman replies: That is fine, I would wash and disinfect them.

Ukrainian children in Irish schools
« Reply #1248 on: April 01, 2022, 03:19:32 PM »
Wife's relative who escaped to Ireland has two boys, 9 and 7.

In Ukraine, the system is that children have same teacher for grades 1-4 except for English classes.

Unfortunately the 9 year old got stuck with a not-so-good teacher and he has developed a dislike for school.

But now, he is loving school in Ireland.
His mother has been teaching them English intensively for the last couple of years, so he is doing OK in Ireland.
He tells that he understands nothing the teacher says, but he can read the assignments and understands what he is supposed to do.
Of course we know he will start to understand her quickly as children generally do.

The 7 year old has always loved school and he also is doing well in the Irish school.

« Reply #1249 on: April 01, 2022, 03:26:19 PM »
Wife has a couple of older female friends who live in northwestern suburbs of Kyiv.

They had grown tired of living in subways, so a couple of weeks ago said 'the hell with it' and moved back into their apartments.

She talks on Skype and Viber daily with them.

Now they tell how they can see the withdrawing Russian troops are putting young Ukrainian children on the front of their trucks and tanks to discourage Ukrainian military from firing on them.

Russians also putting mines and other explosives in the surrounding woods as they leave and putting explosives in the dead bodies lying in streets.
A beautiful woman is pleasant to look at, but it is easier to live with a pleasant acting one.
