Trench you are really an utter ARSE

"By and large" is an OLD ENGLISH sailing term ... meaning having to adjust the sails from tight ( close - hauled ) to easing - loosening - as the conditions change  - in general , overall ...

At least we TRY to help you learn on here - you can be grateful ;)

Not proper English Mobe, any decent English Teacher would correct you on it as it is known as an ambiguous term.

"By and large" is a perfectly acceptable idiom, per the Cambridge Dictionary, among others, and Strunk and White's Elements of Style.

This post was composed without the aid of google.

Not traditionally, its not doubt a recent 'update' to the dictionary. Traditionally it was considered ambigous and poor English. Fundamentally it doesn't make sense, what does 'by' and 'large' mean together in its compostion. Separately their meaing is apparent but together in that phrase its pure gobbly-gook. Meaning has been derided from the term 'by and large' over time but that was originally not termed good English and instead better to use the terms the user was trying to convey.

Elements of Style was first printed in 1918.

"By and large" is used in the Oxford Style Guide, the BBC Style Guide, and the Concise Oxford Companion to Good English.

I would not use the phrase in formal writing, but on a forum, absolutely.  There is nothing wrong with it.

By and large or full and by. Both are nautical terms that are now common English expressions. Only an ignoramous would question this. They have been used since the second half of the 19th century in day to day English.

Trench really why not face your ignorance with the same vigor that you use trying to score some brownie point.

What a cry baby you are. You relentlessly  troll member after member  with your self righteous crap  and when someone ( 2 T in this case)  points it out ( again) you cry the hurt.
There must be at least 100 people here who would agree with all that! :deadhorse: :cluebat:

You accuse Av-- fact is it is the other around !

I have demonstrated you did lie --- and instead of offering up some confirming material  to prove me wrong -- you offer bluster and pulp bs to cover your lie.
That is just one example -- there are many more.

The problem is carrying your BS across many threads that adds nothing to the specific topic-- and even less to the forum as a whole .
The net result =  many bored with threads and ultimately the forum. Wasting time on a cretin like Moby is something most of us do not need.

From telling us Crimea hadn't  'been mapped' to telling us you knew more about mapping software and when I 'wasn't in Crimea', you are a hoot ..

There is another BLATANT LIE  -- 2 in fact

I have never said either of those things  -- I did say you were not there at a time you claimed ie you lied  to attempt to "support"  your story.

What I said (for the record) was something like -"it was not mapped" at the time I was referring to-- which was 2010 in fact. The truly dumb is you wanting to tell me what MY GPS was doing !

At the time and  many times since that "discussion"   you have attempted to distort and misrepresent what I actually said -- because you know you were trapped in a lie-- and all you have done since I made that accusation is try and  distort what it was about -- all that instead of offering one piece of supporting evidence.

Fact is Moby-- there today is your lie telling in plain sight.

Also note --Moby cannot just leave something alone and just shut up-- and stop diverting threads to be about him.

Ri-ight ..So I'll add 'memory loss issues' to your penchant for telling other folks they've not been where they've been

What I said (for the record) was something like -"it was not mapped" at the time I was referring to-- which was 2010 in fact. The truly dumb is you wanting to tell me what MY GPS was doing !

The 'truly dumb' tried to tell the readers that I wasn't in Crimea when I was and 'lectured' someone who licences mapping software ....

The FACT is that telling people they weren't / where they were and what they were / weren't doing is a mite silly - seeing that person IS the person that would know ? .....

A FIB is constantly repeating such nonsense - and compounding it by suggesting Crimea wasn't 'mapped' .. I did suggest OpenStreeMaps would confirm what you refuse to accept

Also note --Moby cannot just leave something alone and just shut up-- and stop diverting threads to be about him.

You are as bad as the person who tells me I've not met Jeremy Clarkson twice and didn't rescue him from the roadside in Pays de Calais when his De Tomaso Pantera broke down whilst dressed as Fred Flintstone .. He tells everyone I'm 'lying' because I can't 'prove' something ( to his satisfaction ) with a photo from nearly 30 years ago ....

I'm 'sorry' ... JayH wants to make stuff up / call people fibbers and be left alone ? !

Newsflash ... if you suggest as such - don't be surprised if it gets mentioned

Moved from Ukrainian Neo Nazi thread

If someone would believe a major Hotel and Casino entrepreneur is a xenophobe, then they would actually believe Ukrainians harbor only a fraction of the anti Semitism of their FSU neighbors. {rolling eyes and shaking head}

My first visit to Russia just after the SU breakup, Russians all knew lots of news was fake. It took Americans another 20 years to realize that. And still today, Westerners fill their ears with what they want to hear eating bon bons, like Trump is a xenophobe. The truth is, the USA desperate for low cost labor. We are experiencing an acute labor shortage, and we have a conman motivating Central Americans to come here quickly on their own dime to work 16 hours a day for peanuts. If they don't come, the resulting wage inflation will make financing our 22 Trillion in debt unaffordable due to higher interest rates. I don't have to give a lecture on Marxian ideology and the commoditization of Labor on a FSU board? Do I?

Internet censorship in Russia

The issue of internet censorship was brought up. I just want to say my experiences in Russia showed me a nation that was very open, but I haven't been the last couple of years. I was in China recently though, and they do block websites. However, its so easy to get around. Just get on Chinese Bing or another Chinese search engine, find a proxy server in Europe and like that you can access all the sites that were blocked. I could livestream my airport lunch in Guǎngzhōu 10 minutes after my plane lanes, so I doubt Russia has censorship that would block anyone with half a brain from livestreaming

Absolutely not the case, now ...

Have 3K followers - you must reveal who you are

New legislation will mean one must register devices connecting to the internet

The 'excuse' is that Big Brother wants to know about 'bad people' ....but you are 'BAD'
if you post something that is critical of govt - without any positivity ...

IF you think I'm joking - a quick check of recent legislation will confirm

if someone challenges the authenticity of your travel experiences
then by all means one should reply with photographic documentation....

if someone were to challenge the veracity of my posts, claiming I had never been to Sevastopol
then I would respond with two images:

1. tallest girl in Sevastopol (who I later married!)
2. the cover of her internal Sevastopol Passport from the time period of when Sevastopol was a closed city

ergo, I've been to Sevastopol, vini vicci, vamanos

msmob,

please, JayH is very emotionally vulnerable right now after his most recent breakup
it would really be ungentlemanly of you to boast of your romantic success at his expense
it's been tough on JayH leaving the outback and making his journey into the white man's world
with nothing but Aboriginal folk tales of the "White Mother" to guide him
you may see his camp fire late at night down by the river next to his van, a sad solitary figure silhouetted against the camp fire...
and faintly...faintly...you may hear that familiar refrain, "waltzing matilda...waltzing matilda..."
aye laddie, it brings a tear to the eye, now doesn't it?

and lastly sir, may I ask that you please refrain from making the rather obvious assumption that since JayH is devoid of female companionship, that he must resort to “handmade” methods of sexual gratification like Bee Farmer!!
that would REALLY be unfair, even if it is undoubtedly true, poor fella...!!!
