Ukraine Customs/Import Restrictions
« Reply #25 on: April 24, 2010, 10:51:29 PM »
Like Makkin says - alot of it is how you resent yourself. I have had no problems at Borispol Airport when entering or leaving, in the last 12 months I have flown in/out 7 times. I also travelled across the border into Poland this year, via international train, the custom checks were none, but the passport and visa checks were very intense.
There is a link to Borispol airport on the information site www.kharkovinfo.com
I know can't buy local currency, from outside of Ukraine, so bring $ dollars. Euros are no good. You can exchange your $ for local money at any exchange or bank - BUT your $ have to be like new, with no marks or folds , because the banks are very fussy about it.
Becareful with using credit cards, its best to use a bank to change , keep away from ATM cash machines.

May'10 - Have just flown back into Ukraine again from visit to UK.
Drive from Borispol to Kharkov now down to 4hr 50 mins, due to road improvements.
No problems at Customs, brought in 4 Apples for friends and family.
Although I have Ukraine Visa, you still need to fill in both parts of Immigration forms for Passport Control, you get this from center pillar in the main building as you walk inside.
Also just visited Kharkov Airport, new expansion coming along great, looks bigger than Borispol building ! , its due for opening late this year/ beginning of next year, ready for Euro 2012 Football.

Ukraine Customs/Import Restrictions

I have been through Borispol 3 times in the last 3 months from the UK and i havnt had any problems. The only time i ever got a question was 2 weeks ago when i was asked where i was staying by immigration control. I told him i did not know the address as i was being met at the airport and he was happy with this. I have taken allot of cash and gifts through. I guess it like people generally say, be natural, act like you know what your doing and they leave you alone.
Why do I always insist on choosing the difficult options?

unless you are bringing ridiculous amounts of stuff then you wont even catch their attention.  I brought 3 iphones and 3 galaxy s4 phones for my "kids"
in addition to my own 3 phones
ALWAYS try to exit when many others are leaving DO NOT LOOK AT THEM and go straight for the door and 9 times out of 10 you will be fine.
Last month my friend and I brought 14 suitcases(aid delivery) and went through without anyone stopping us.
probably helped that my friend was dressed in full army uniform ;)

What kind of tips or info needed???   Don't bring an dope???  :o  :D

Best area to stay is near European Square, Most City ( nice mall) is right there and you are very close to river. Did you get your apt yet, I know of a very good one in area? I like pizza, Felicita is very good. The restaurant on Karl Marksa across from park is cool inside. Passage has good restaurant on near top.

Got an apartment on Kirova, about 2km south of city center.  Very high ratings, 9.9/10.  I hate downtown area, hell, I live in Hesperia, we don't even have one. (unless you count the new Walmart)

I've visited the city there online for the past couple weeks, learn what I can there, just wondered if I could get a few first-hand impressions.

BTW, I was born in LA pre WW2, grew up in Monterey Park when you could read the signs.  Moved out of the city four times, it just kept following me.....

Tanks for your input.

I like to walk around most places.....and not worry about walking all the way back if it is far. What will you do when alone? Sounds like you'll need taxi to get anywhere unless you just want the quiet. You are just far away from river(walking). Hopefully this girl you are meeting is worth your trip and not end up a $$$$ trip. Taxi's, meals and terps can get expensive. I wish you a good time!!
BTW, I too am an angeleno, half hour north of LA.

Isn't Hesperia a street in Apple Valley?  Or am I mistaken?  At one time wasn't it a suburb of Victorville?

I heard they brought that Walmart in there so the women with BaDonkaDonk Butts can walk around.

Hesperia was founded by being the place where Okies ran out of gas and money at the same time during the last depression.  Now it is the place where people can afford to live during THIS depression.
Victorville is a slum, Apple Valley is about as high class as it gets around here.  Hespeia has the good water, AKA hes perrier..

Until a couple years ago, an old car on cinder blocks was known as a lawn ornament.  Now we don't have lawns.  Damn, we need some rain!!

People ragging on my hometown.  :cluebat:  I have not been there in over 5 years (nor lived there in 28 years) so it may be on a downward trend.

John (of Hesperia) I send you a PM the other day, did you get it? I have been to Dnepropetrovsk and can answer any questions you have. It is a nice city and the river front is a nice stroll. The airport is not big, but serviceable. The downtown area is nice and not like US cities. You should enjoy the experience.

Enjoy your trip.
