New here and worried about war with Russia
« on: January 24, 2022, 03:04:51 AM »
My name's Rick and I've been dating a Russian lady and now I see advice not to travel there.

We are considering meeting in Turkey or Egypt. Any tips on where to meet in February where Russians should still be able to travel even if hostilities break out ?

Have you met her already or is it just online meets so far?
If you haven’t met IRL her then you aren’t really ‘dating’.

It’s not phasing the guys I know that are planning to visit, myself included ...... What’s your girlfriend say?...... The Russians I talk with say it’s a non event and Putin’s claiming on state media that there will be no invasion, it’s just western warmongering, if you can trust his word.

When it says travel advisory...is this advising not to travel or forbidding not to travel?
Besides, you can only travel when you can board a flight anyway.
Where in Russia the lady lives could matter.
I would suggest ...meet in Poland.

I’m not saying he’s a good man or his actions are right..... The Russians I chat with despise Putin and want to see him gone, but they don’t think he’s foolish enough to invade in this climate, Hence him essentially backpedaling on State media and denying any claims he’ll invade, but to save face he’s blaming western warmongering as the cause of the invasion rumors.

Heaven forbid the US have never done such things...

Oh wait, my bad, the US never actually amassed massive numbers of troops along the border. It just bomb and invades any country it wants without hesitation.

Most of the U.s embassy staff in Kiev was pulled over recent events.
They normally have intel the news doesn't, and they dont typically pull personal without good reason.

While I hope there is no invasion,  i wouldn't travel to Russia or Ukraine at this time.
I typically  ignore travel advisories as they are often overly cautious.

You've met several times, so I'd wait a few weeks ,or plan a visit in another country as you mentioned.

There are a lot of different restrictions right now, they change often, so you would need to really check into that.

Personally I'd suggest Austria, or even DR.(or other Caribbean isles.)

Egypt is fundamentally limited to sharm.el.shiek.
Unless you enjoy diving ,or just hanging in a resort or casino or hotel.pool ,its not that good , its extremely limited as far as beach /swimming for *seaside resorts*.

The diving isnt anything like it used to be either.

Cyprus or Turkey could be options

She is russian, so a tourist visa to you maybe a possibility?

If you must meet sooner than later, maybe your best course of action is determine the best place (if outside her country) to do so considering the pandemic restrictions of various destinations that would be relatively convenient for both of you.

Thailand is scheduled to relax its travel restriction beginning February 1st.

I have a friend who goes to Thailand twice a year pre-covid. He was planning to visit again soon, but is holding back till the end of the year...... Supposedly lots of businesses have closed and are now occupied by the homeless..... He said anyone who goes early will probably spend the whole time being accosted by beggars.

Understood and won’t be surprised if true. Such is the global climate with this pandemic. This will likely be, more or less, affecting various destination. Which is why methinks the OP need to exercise his own diligence to fit his/their personal situation.

Thanks for all the responses, guys

My thinking was that flights to ex Soviet nations ( like Poland ) would be the first to be suspended, with Turkey and Egypt being less likely affected.

Cyprus is a good one.

Why do you think this is happening, now ?

I think Pres Putin thinks the west is weak and without Merkel will be at its most split.

Like many Russians, my lady does not feel she can change anything in her nation.

We have met in Thailand and I know a Russian family ( that we met) who have stayed there, with the teenage daughter attending school there.  They seem to live safely and well.

I'm not sure USA or UK or NATO troops can offer anything regarding fighting Russians the Ukrainian army doesn't already know.

Ukraine has a much bigger army than the UK has for a start, and they've been training for this for seven years.

Provided we arm them sufficiently, which we now appear to be doing, then Russia is going to find this a difficult invasion..if it happens...especially, as Russian people in general are  probably not behind a war with Ukraine.

One bad battle, with lots of Russian troops killed, will put Putin in serious trouble.

Just saying it like it is.

That’s exactly right. The US is currently out of war, and it very desperately needs a new one! Pronto Tonto! This administration needs something to disassociate its people from its domestic troubles and pressing problems. for instance mounting opioid deaths, uncontrolled inflation, virus, unabated crimes, etc. A call for a new war can have a momentary reversal impact on the current political attitude in the US today. Especially since this is the midterm election year.

If Russia doesn’t attack, rest assured the neocon will force and instigate one and ensure Kyiv becomes Aleppo II.

This will be carried out, like we always have, under good intention like we’ve done in Iraq, Afghanistan, Syria, Yemen, Libya and in most places of our global community. The fact tens of millions of those countries citizens have paid dearly for our good intentions is really a small price to pay for our war games. Ukrainians will soon be in for a very rude awakening. This war isn’t happening on American, British or Russian soil. Bombs will come raining down on Ukrainian citizens, not Russians, Americans, British, but who the heck really ever cared about that?

Let the band begins to play.

Forgive me, but you may be repeating the same historical mistake that preceded  the 3rd Reich's expansionism in the mid '30's.

You may be misunderstanding the Russian leadership. It is they that are provoking and have now painted themselves into a corner.  They cannot climb down.

A deeply unpopular Putin seeks a distraction and suggests to Russians that Ukraine are 'brothers', while 80 plus percent of it's citizens do not trust him. He needs to prove he is strong and believes the west will do nothing and he will suggest the west are "bad and weak" .  Might I suggest you read the some of the Russian headlines ?

NATO verbally promised no expansion to Shevardnadze when the USSR Foreign Minister and Putin ( a junior KGB officer in E.Germany ) still finds this hard to swallow and suggests aggression on NATO's part.

A neutral would surely see that only his Russia has been invading territory.

Perhaps, you think sitting on your hands and covering your eyes and ears will not effect the US ? You are mistaken.  Inaction to the likes of Putin will simply bring a really large war closer.

Has the US made foreign policy mistakes? By the bucket full, but that does not mean non-interventionism is the correct policy. In fact, it is bringing about the current crisis. What sane leader seeks war and wants to see armed forces coming home in body bags.  BOTH sides have to realise this. Only one does/

I fear you do not understand. A standard theme of Putin's Russia is to claim non Russian territory needs defending to protect Russian citizens. Russians will die. The question is going to be how many, if Putin thinks the west will simply make a lot of noise and  do nothing as you appear to be advocating.

Much too verbose, and the fact it preceded with Hitlerism renders this hardly worth a riposte.

One needs not think long and hard about recent history if one needs to assess exactly which nation had been actively engaged in hegemony the past two to three decades alone.

Worry more about what your own country is doing and have done.

If anything, your response suggests an unwillingness to sees the signs of recent history repeating itself.

Hitler felt humiliated by the outcome of World War I

Hitler felt France and England were subjugating Germany

Hitler used false flags as a pretext to invade

Hitler used civil wars in third nations as a pretext to test military hardware and gain experience.

Hitler annexed former territory under the pretext of protecting ethnic Germans and our forefather's stood idly by

If the mention of the third Reich is the issue, I could have used the Japanese expansionism staring in in Manchuria  or Mussolini in Ethiopia.

I am very sorry that you felt the need to suggest an imagined emotional state, rather than engaging in reasoned debate to what I believed were sound parallels.
