Every once in a while, I mention to wife about going to Ukraine to live.

She always reminds me how upset I get at the crappy level of retail service there, so I wouldn't last much more than a couple of months.

Getting good prescription drugs would be a serious problem also.

Wife says that certain services have improved a lot compared to 10+ years ago.
Particularly in banking.  Tellers and branch managers now more customer friendly compared to their prior attitude of . . . we are doing you a favor by even talking to you.

And now there are a lot of private medical clinics . . . for pay of course, that are more attentive than the government clinics.

But in large department stores and grocery stores, still crappy.
e.g. Where can I find a certain type of shirt ?
Clerk:  Look around yourself.

And small shops also.
e.g. I would like just a couple of slices of that ham.
Clerk: I can't be bothered with that.

ya ponelle

cuz i'm autistic, I tend to take things literally....
and in view of "recent events"

moy dadooshka was from Moldavanka in Odessa
i've had almost no contact with the Odesa Jewish community, all 3 of them

I like the Crimean war monument in Sevastopol, that commerates the 500 jewish sailors who died there in the Crimean war
ironically, Jews weren't allowed to live in Sevastopol at the time

in other words, nothin's really changed in RuZZia
just the names and labels

what's interestin, is when I watch Ukrainian TV on Utube
the country that's most often referenced isn't Ukraine or Russia
eta Amerika!!!

if Pootin can pull off a Trump victory again, you can see what's gonna happen to Ukraine
this is why Zelensky is hedging now with territorial concessions to RuZZia bein privately negotiated
cuz he may not have a choice after next month

i'm still waitin for Putin's SURPRIZE
Biden dropping out, really disrupted his plan of attack
and he's been too slow on the "comeback" unless it's gonna happen in the next few weeks

if the Trump Army of "poll watchers" disrupts the election
elon musky, will allow Russians to push for a civil war on "X"

if this is the plan, I really don't see how Maidan can be avoided in the USA
it won't come from Twitter this time, cuz Musky will block that
I guess Facebook will announce the call for "Action"

we're gonna find out, real soon now

PS
How I "negotiated" with RuZZians
I'd fake being the stereotype of a wealthy but naive, dumb American
I'd agree to any price with no pushback and always smile and be pleasant
then on the day of signing the contract, and all parties are assembled
right before they hand me the pen
I'd react to some imaginary "slight" and become angry and indignant
and jump up and walk out
you should see the look on everybody's faces
they'd chase after me, the more I walked, the more discount I got

later, they were really pissed with me, cuz they knew I played them
RuZZians never expect to get played by an American
they don't know I'm a zhid, cuz I don't look like one

most Russian zhids, have a round face
and mine is more angular
and I have light colored hair and blue eyes

a wolf in sheep's clothing

the czarist rules were complicated in regards to the Pale and yvray
for example workin class Jews couldn't live in Kiev, you had to have some kinda top level merchant status, or be a veteran after 25 years of military service
those were the only exceptions

Odessa was "special" cuz empress Catherine needed the zhids to develop the economy of the port city
and russians were too pridorki to do it

if all the jews didn't leave Russia and move to Israel, RuZZia would be kicking ass right now in Ukraine
half the engineers I worked with on Iron Dome in Israel were Russian emigres

I had a "system" for doing bizness in Russia
I had a "Patron" and protector, my goal was to make him a lotta money and be useful
and find ways to make money for myself that didn't come out of his pocket, but somebody else's
this way, I'm ALWAYS worth more alive than dead
I made so much money for RuZZians with bitcoin, it was crazy
and even with "my system" I still almost got myself killed and my wife almost ended up accidentally taking my place

now, i'm just some ole starik, in the USA
I doubt i'm gonna ever see RuZZia again, except in my dreams

I am considering a dacha in Odesa, depending on when and how the war ends. Even with the horrible war in Ukraine right now, personally I am more optimistic for Ukraine’s future than for Belarus unfortunately. Belarus might have one small chance again if ruzzia disintegrates, even if temporarily. Which is unlikely.

well not only to Israel, after all even Sergei Brin is a Russian Jew!
And of course brain drain is not just Jews!

Russia had had brain drain since 1917. Thinking people were always trying to leave.
And whoever stayed Stalin finished off. Stalin basically killed off all independent thinkers
which resulted in majority of russians having a slave mentality. No wonder
Putin's propaganda works so well on majority of the population!

you...????

I feel really sad for the young people in RuZZia and Ukraine and Belarus
it brings me to tears sometimes, cuz I see their faces full of hope for the future
and I know what their future is likely to become

all to please Pootin and the oligarchs
I feel sad, but then I get angry

Not just ruzzians. Stalin purposely killed off the most talented  representatives of other Soviet republics, specifically poets, artists, writers, scientists.
October 29th is coming up - one of the darkest pages in the Soviet history of Belarus. It is called “the night of executed poets”,  when NKVD executed over 130 of Belarus’ most talented sons overnight - carriers of the Belarusian language, culture, national identity.poets, writers, musicians, scientists. This is not the only, just the most tragic instance of cultural genocide. Just looking at Belarusian history from 1795 when most of it was occupied by the Russian empire, I wonder how we even managed to survive as a people.

Yes very true! Well Russians don't even consider Belarussians a nation! And they mostly think of Belorussian language
as the "village" Russian, just like Ukranian language :( великоросы короче :(

Lucky you! I went to Crimea several times in summer while in college with my friends, but have never been to Odessa, always wanted to go!
My son’s nanny is from Odessa, she raised him since he was 3 months old(he is almost 9 now). We have become a family through all these years together. Unfortunately her American husband passed away almost two year ago and she made a decision to return to Odessa in March 2024, she has close  family there. We talk daily and she is coming over to stay with us and vacation together this winter. The plan is for her to purchase a permanent home  and for us a dacha nearby when the war is over.

if those of you who live in the USA can vote early, I'd recommend it, and not vote on election day, Nov 5, if you can help it
make sure yur car has a full tank of gas and ya have some food stockpiled for then

just in case....
it's better to be prepared and not need it
then to need it and not be prepared

there's a chance that Trump will have a second coup on election day
and will try and disrupt voting
remember what Jan 6 looked like
don't get caught in the middle of it. if it does...

I hope we all come out OK, after this is over
even 2tallBeel, if I were a Christian, I'd pray fer him most of all

I wish I was wrong about him
I've given that "boy" every chance to show me I'm wrong about him
but I haven't seen anything to suggest I am

after I saw Auschwitz, I didn't believe in god or that mankind was basically good, like Anne Frank did

Yes unfortunately I agree :(
Here close to Reno there is Virginia City, a small old western town.
back in August a black guy was doing his job getting signatures for something nonpartisan
Some MAGA hat wearing local white folks started telling him they have a hanging tree for people like him.
e recorded the whole thing. Local business owners.

I later looked at yelp for Virginia City business reviews and for YEARS there were reviews of several
businesses in Virginia City which said they were racist and rude to anyone not white.
I am never setting a foot in that place again!
And I was NOT surprised that some of the group of obnoxious rednecks who verbally assaulted that black guy
wore the MAGA hat.

I don't believe in verbally abusing anyone particularly if no antagonism from another party. However, I believe people should be allowed to live in a way they are comfortable with. It's why I made a post a few months ago about wouldn't everyone be happier living in communities they were comfortable in, in theory, rather than necessarily by country destination, etc. So gays innan all gay community, those that want a mixed community in an all mixed community, etc, etc.

I myself am more concerned with how I am getting on thaj being pre-occupied with racial, sexuality and other stuff. Most people I think are probably the same, unless a civil war is at hand they would rather just get on and try and have a life than have that disrupted with a load of antagonism over these issues. While the guy in question possibly didn't know the area he was surveying in and the types of people that lived there and shouldn't have really gotten abuse for being in those parts I would say that I can understand that not all people wish to accept what the government may wish them to accept.

Shadow here is willing to go to Russia to avoid the multi racial community, that's on a backdrop of many in the Netherlands voting for Geert Wilders who is anti-muslim immigration. So he is not alone among Dutch people feeling that way, whether Wilders can do anything without an absolute majority is another matter. In the UK we have a similar situation to the Netherlands, a growing Muslim population and things aren't the way they used to be, there has long been ethnic minority populations since the 1950s but now they seem to be growing in size. Where that will end up who knows, possibly the Muslims may take control of the UK and we'll all have to follow Islam with white people becoming the minority and possibly being treated badly for it. No one seems to want to do anything for fear of being labelled racist and as said above concentrate on their own lives.

Potentially Ukraine could be a pleasant place away from all of that in the future. Maybe or maybe not. I think you are right Krim that not staying in one country permanently might be the right way to go. For me avoiding cold punishing winters would probably be the way to go for me :D We'll see, but I still would not see Russia as the place to be with the current leadership over there, just way too risky that idyllic life there could turn sour at any moment for many reasons.
