The pan flute in Alturas reminded me of Rumanian Georghe Zamfir:

And the pan flute reminded me of another ethnic instrument, the ancient Sardinian launeddas, the triple reed pipes (2 five-holed chanters of different lengths and 1 drone).

They are played using circular breathing, and can go on for HOURS :( ;D.

Alone I go with my sorrow
Alone goes my sentence
To run is my destiny
To escape the law
Lost in the heart of the great Babylon
They call me
clandestine
For not having any papers

To a city of the north
I went to work
I left my life
Between Ceuta and
Gibraltar
I’m a line in the sea
A ghost in the city
My life is forbidden
So says the authority

Alone I go with my sorrow
Alone goes my sentence
To run is my destiny
For having no papers
Lost
in the heart
Of the great Babylon
They call me clandestine
I’m the lawbreaker
Mano negra clandestine
Peruan clandestine
African clandestine
Marihuana illegal

Alone I go with my sorrow
Alone
goes my sentence
To run is my destiny
To escape the law
Lost in the heart of the great Babylon
They call me
clandestine
For not having any papers

Actually I do like their music Sandro.. it gets me deep in my soul.. can't listen to it all the time of course.. Manu has the same sort of message but is less confrontational musically.. wonder if you will like Clandestino

Agreeable, but rather 'light' on the musical side, and I don't mean volume. You see, good music requires BOTH repetition and variation, if you only get one of the two, it becomes boring, at least to me: I cannot stand Rap, for instance, I find it excruciatingly monotonous :(.

But again, my point is that you are probably paying more attention to the lyrics - and their political message - than to the musical aspects as I do (melody, harmony, rhythm, tempo, etc. etc.)

Try this one from Cafe Tacuba..
Much kinder to my ears - more varied ;) - and I think I recognised some Mozart in its first 10 seconds, possibly the ouverture of one of his operas, I think Lucio Silla ::), but I'll have to check.

By the way Cafe Tacuba is a resturant in Mexico City.  It has been in the same spot since 1912 and is a great place for a romantic dinner.  Poets, artists and musicians have been hanging out there for decades.  I have eaten there many times.  The food is excellent though a tiny bit traditional for my taste.

Abrázame y muérdeme
Llévate contigo mís heridas
aviéntame y déjame
Mientras yo contemplo tu partida
En espera de que vuelvas y tal vez vuelvas por mí

Hold me and bite me
Take my wounds with you
shove me and leave me
While I contemplate your departure
Waiting for you to come back and perhaps come back for me

Y ya te vas qué me dirás, dirás
Qué poco sabes tú decir

And you're leaving now; what will you say to me, say [to me]
You know so little to say

Despídete, ya no estarás
Al menos ten conmigo esa bondad
Te extrañaré no mentiré
Me duele que no estés y tú te vas

Say goodbye, you will no longer be here
Show me at least that much kindness
I will miss you; I won't lie
Your not being here hurts me and you're leaving

Tie me up and bite me
Take my wounds with you
Whisper into me and bark at me
Scream until I can no longer hear anything [else]
Just look at how I stay behind here waiting for you not to be here
Waiting for you to come back and perhaps come back for me
Waiting for you to come back and perhaps come back for me

CONTAMINATIONS

Mixing aspects of classical music with jazz may produce some interesting results. Let's consider rhythm:

Quote
"Take Five" is a classic jazz piece first recorded by the Dave Brubeck Quartet and released on its 1959 album Time Out. It became the first million-selling jazz single on the Billboard Hot 100 charts in 1961, at a time when rock music was in fashion.
“Take Five” became Brubeck’s best known and signature tune, although it was composed by Paul Desmond, the group's saxophonist. It became famous for its distinctive, catchy saxophone melody and use of an unusual five beat quintuple time, from which its name is derived. [1]The track also features Eugene Wright on bass and Joe Morello on drums.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Take_Five

The rhythm is in 5/8, but this wasn't Brubeck's only experiment with unusual rhythm patterns:

9/8, probably inspired by the 3rd movement (Rondo alla Turca) of Mozart's Piano sonata no. 11  in A major KV 881, in 6/8:

And, in 7/8, but less inspiring:

And how about the classical elegance of:

A revisitation of a Bach's prelude:
