I think there is a viable business opportunity here.

A spacecraft that is launched with specific capability to retrieve the pieces of junk floating around up there.
A beautiful woman is pleasant to look at, but it is easier to live with a pleasant acting one.

There are 38 pounds of gold in a cubic mile of sea water. It would be far cheaper
and easier to get the gold out of sea water than junk floating around in orbit. It
would be far easier to find buyers of seawater gold than people or governments
paying for space junk collection.

Fees man fees.

In the big (and some not so big) cities, we have to pay to pee or poop.
In Vienna, you can pee or poop to the music of Mozart.

Each satellite launched would have to pay a fee to some world organization.  These fees (that are left after waste, fraud, etc.) would then pay for my proposed junk collector satellite.

So what?  We did it, China did it, and now Russia.

Russia, backed by China did propose a treaty banning such quite some time ago...  Too bad we didn't hop on that opportunity, instead got all caught up in Star Wars (Strategic Defense Initiative) and now Space Force.

Yeah, trashes space around our planet, making it more dangerous but heck, gotta keep the arms industry busy.  Obviously, future generations (if we still exist by then) will have to clean it up.

So what?

I found it in the news and it's semi topical since this is a FSU forum.
Did you want me to start a Democrats = inflation thread instead?

Nobody is ever going to clean it up. It took Skylab about 6 years to fall out of
orbit. It can't be that much longer for most of the space junk up there now.

You are talking about a 1980's treaty? If it didn't work in the 1980's we
should give up?

It's a $58 million dollar price tag to send a space shuttle into space, not counting
the price of the shuttle. Russia and China won't pay you a single yen or kopeck.

If you picked up 10 pieces of junk each trip, how many trips would it take?
I doubt that you would find that many pieces per trip. The fee to break even
would be $5.8 million per piece you found not counting the price of the Shuttle.

Yeah, it's Yaun and I actually know that. The point is
that neither country cares enough to pay anything.
