Sending money FROM Russia to the US
« on: February 24, 2020, 01:53:51 PM »
My brother in law needs to send us some money to buy a car part and send it to him.  What is the best/cheapest way to send money from Russia to the US.  Seems like Western Union wants about 10%

Have you tried 'XOOM'? Click on the link as it is the 'fee determination' section of cost for wire transfer from country to country.

I don't know which part, or how much, there's always the option of being a 'bro' and just buying it and sending him the item - free of charge.

With sanctions on Russia, it may affect some banking business. How about Paypal? If two people have their accounts tied to their own Paypal accounts, sending money to family and friends is free in the US. Don't know if there is an international charge or not.

The largest problem may be getting the part to him in Russia.   Russians are notorious for stopping single shipping containers and holding them for ransom until a bribe is paid to release it.

Better tell your brother-in-law to create WU on-lain account and check how it works without seems. Money transfers from bank account to bank account are for free.

If he has a paper check or can get a money order at a decent price and your bank has an app that would probably be best. With USAA I can deposit up to $10k instantly. Just need a picture of the Check/MO and print it out. Paypal and Google Pay didn't work when I was in Ukraine, Same I'd assume in Russia.

Paper check in Russia?  :P  :cluebat: Unlikely. I will not give any advice for Ukraine because it's different state with different pay system. Sending money for years to Russia via Paypal, it worked ok except unfair currency exchange. Usually transactions depend on amount >>> if it's big enough direct deposit from bank account to bank account might be the cheapest.  A lot of options indeed.  :P

Not sure if there's any difference, but the OP was asking transfer coming from Russia going to the US. Not the other way around. That's why I posted 'XOOM' instead of Paypal (It's a subsidiary of Paypal but geared more for international transfers).

You could try Meest.  Meest does deliver money to both Ukraine and Russia, so they may be able to do so the other way around.  We used to send money this way, back in the day before Western Union and moneygram (which is the best way to send small amounts).  If the part is small, they are also an option to send.

NO problem sending it TO Russia in seconds ( transferwise, revolut, etc., )

Sending money from RU is a pain in the ....

PayPal are bloomin' expensive - as you must have a USD account in Russia getting dollars onto your account means you'd have to have been sent USD

We found the best way was to set up a VPN in the UK - get a UK merchant account credit / debit card machine - and allow the Russian to pay in Roubles on their debit / credit card to the UK ...Would work for the US, too - for regular payments -   but for one off / non-regular transactions - hardly practical - cost 1%

You can transfer USD from a USD account from a RU bank or a Rouble account ... but it's not cheap or instant  - Swift fees ((

Someone suggested xoom .... ?!

They charge 3 percent and one must send USD from Russia - which will be another 'hit' in currency exchange

If someone knows a cheaper / faster ( legal) way to send money from RU to the US or even the UK ... we'd like to know
