Volunteer drones in Ukraine spot Russian military camp

More than 100,000 view YouTube clip purporting to document presence of Russian troops

The Daily Beast ezine and the Washington Post newspaper yesterday publish articles about Russia's unremitting invasion of Ukraine. Both talk about a 11-minute video captured by drone aircraft operated by a volunteer pro-Ukraine group, Dnipro-1.

The clip purports to show a Russian military encampment in eastern Ukraine, bolstering claims that Moscow has expanded its military actions there. The video points out T-72 tanks, construction equipment and tents, and notes that activity has increased in the last month.

Drone video appears to show Russian military base in eastern Ukraine
BY CHRISTOPHER MILLER

DONETSK, Ukraine —Ukrainian fighters on Tuesday published a drone video that they claimed shows a Russian military base hidden near the front lines in war-torn eastern Ukraine.

The video, posted to YouTube by the Kiev-backed Dnipro-1 volunteer regiment, shows a large, fortified military encampment spread across a forested area two kilometers south of the village of Sontsevo, in the Donetsk region which is controlled by Russian-backed separatists.

Russia To Build Electrified Railway Line Bypassing Ukraine
By Kukil Bora @KukilBora on June 30 2015 4:28 AM EDT

Russia’s defense ministry and Russian Railways have reached an agreement to
construct a two-way electrified railway line bypassing Ukraine, Russia’s TASS
news agency reported Tuesday, citing a source. The deal was said to be finalized
on June 25.

According to the deal, the railway line will be constructed between Zhuravka, in
the Voronezh region -- less than 20 miles from the Ukraine border -- and Millerovo,
in the Rostov region in Russia. The two cities are currently about two and a half
hours apart on an existing railway line that cuts through parts of eastern Ukraine.

Pro-Russian Rebels Attack Ukrainian Forces Over 100 Times In 24 Hours As East Ukraine War Threatens To Ignite
By Christopher Harress @Charress c.harress@ibtimes.com on June 29 2015 9:22 AM

Pro-Russian rebels have attacked Ukrainian forces more than 100 times since Sunday, according to a report by UNIAN, a pro-Ukrainian English language news service. The attacks, most of which took place over a 6-hour period leading up to midnight on Sunday, have dramatically increased over the last month and are now reaching levels not seen since the Minsk II agreement ceasefire was signed in February, claims UNIAN.

Russians boycott European summit over Finnish blacklist
Russian State Duma Speaker Sergei Naryshkin has been refused entry to attend an OSCE meeting in Finland because he is on a sanctions blacklist for his role in the Ukraine crisis.

Russian State Duma Speaker Sergei Naryshkin, who was among the Russians
barred from traveling to Helsinki this weekend for a parliamentary meeting of
the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, told reporters Thursday
that the Kremlin considers it “unacceptable” to pare down its 15-member delegation.
So Moscow is boycotting the meeting entirely.

Russian opposition activists want foreigners to occupy and rule Russia

As they say, now it's all clear. The democratic coalition of Kasyanov and Navalny RPR-PARNAS showed its true colors and announced the purpose of its existence. As it turns out, the opposition bloc wants foreigners to rule Russia.

Pravda article If you want to read the direct from the Kremlin news read Pravda.

How foreign NGOs destroy Russia
Recently, the Federation Council suggested introducing a "stop-list" for foreign NGOs in Russia that either implement political tasks to the benefit of foreign states or finance Russian NGOs for the same purpose.

Photo from Pravda

The issue of "political NGOs" has become relevant again lately. It was about the story of Dynasty Foundation, which the Russian Justice Ministry labeled as a "foreign agent". In addition, President Putin made a speech in the Public Chamber, where he spoke about political NGOs, separating them from the part of the "third sector" that deals with social problems.

If you read much Pravda you will go nuts. However, you can see the mood that
the Kremlin is trying to foment here. The USA is a natural aggressor and Russia
has been super reasonable, but if the Russian government doesn't act quickly
then all sorts of apocalyptic bad things could happen.

Pravda article two select paragraphs
Who can win World War Three if it can be won at all?

"The Americans have used nuclear weapons twice after they built nuclear bombs in 1945. They had an intention to use nuclear weapons seven times in various regional conflicts. The American concept of a massive nuclear attack remains unchanged. The plan of attack exists to this day, and every US president modifies it to fit circumstances. At the end of 1945, the USA developed a plan to attack 17 cities of the Soviet Union. Today, the Americans have 3,500 targets in Russia.

"Under the Treaty of Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces from 1987, signed by Gorbachev and George H.W. Bush, we destroyed twice as many missiles than the Americans did. We had a romantic period with NATO in late 80s and 90s. There were 18 cooperation programs, we used to be strategic partners. Today, we are strategic adversaries. None of those 18 programs work. It is the USA that stands behind this confrontation. Fifty percent of NATO's funding comes from America. At the same time, NATO is a tool that executes 100 percent of USA's interests. This is very good business."

Something for men looking overseas to keep in mind. Conservative estimates are a 10% yearly increase in HIV cases and 20% increase in related deaths. The actual numbers may be seven times as high, but difficult to assess as Russia does not report or test as thoroughly as other nations.

Putin rumored to be offering $100B deal for Crimea.

I translated the page but it seems to me they are forgiving debt in exchange for Ukraine recognizing Russia owns Crimea.

Germany and France during the Minsk agreement supported regions in the East having self rule, in other words, the right to break up with Ukraine. They are again pressuring the Ukrainian president to make it happen. Germany and France is willing to carve up Ukraine so they can get back to business with Russia. I don't think Russia has to offer Ukraine anything when major nations in Europe are offering Russia Ukrainian land.

Why would Russia deploy bombers in Crimea?

July 24 2015
Quote
Russian defence ministry sources say a squadron of Tupolev Tu-22M3 long-range bombers will be based in Crimea - but experts question the strategic value of such a move for Russia.
Russia's Interfax news agency reported the plan, quoting an unnamed ministry source, though it has not been officially confirmed. Other Russian media also reported it.
Russia has previously pledged to beef up its military forces in Crimea, which has been internationally isolated since Russia annexed it from Ukraine in March 2014.
Western nations imposed sanctions on Russia after the annexation and tightened them over Russian support for armed separatists in eastern Ukraine.

Wrecked Russian submarine found in Swedish waters
Wrecked Russian submarine 'sank in 1916'

This is interesting stuff. If this is the submarine they were chasing last year that's going to cause some embarrassment for the Kremlin.

If it is a WW1 wreck it's still important because if the hatches are sealed and the boat intact (as the article implies) it's an incredible find and goes a long way in showing the Swedes weren't on drugs when they stated they'd caught a glimpse of something down deep.

Either way, kudos to the Swedish Navy for continuing the search until they found what they were looking for.

Brass

Edit to add: It'll be interesting to observe how the Kremlin reacts. If they start demanding that the wreck be designated a war grave and deemed a protected area in accordance with various military remains agreements in place worldwide (which I believe Sweden supports) it'll be more difficult to prove if this is a modern submarine without actually raising it.

If it is a WW1 wreck
The quoted articles states: "the vessel was about 20m (66ft) long and 3.5m wide" - which is rather small, and excludes WWII and later subs (except for midget subs).

The only  WWI Russian subs of that size that I could find (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:World_War_I_submarines_of_Russia):

Left: Delfin (Launched 1902, length: 19.6 m-64 ft, beam: 3.3 m-11 ft) - An unlucky boat, it sank multiple times (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russian_submarine_Delfin), and was eventually scrapped in 1920.

Right: Som Class (length: 20 m-66 ft, beam: 3.5 m-11 ft), it included (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Som-class_submarine):
Som - Сом - Catfish (Launched 1904, ex Fulton - Delivered to Vladivostok 1904; to Black Sea Fleet then to Baltic Fleet 1915; sunk in collision 10 May 1916).
Beluga - Белуга - Beluga    (Launched 1905, Baltic Fleet - Scuttled 25 February 1918 in Tallinn).
Losos - Лосось - Salmon    (Launched 1905, Black Sea Fleet - Scuttled 1919 in Sevastopol).
Peskar - Пескарь - Gudgeon (Launched 1905,  Baltic Fleet - Scuttled 25 February 1918 in Tallinn).
Schuka - Щука - Pike (Launched 1905, Baltic Fleet - Scuttled 25 February 1918 in Tallinn).
Sterlyad - Стерлядь - Sterlet (Launched 1905,  Baltic Fleet - Scuttled 25 February 1918 in Tallinn).
Sudak - Sander (Launched 1907, Black Sea Fleet - Scuttled 1919 in Sevastopol).

Som was originally the Fulton, an experimental submarine that was the prototype for USS Plunger and subsequent Plunger-class submarines. It was sold and delivered to Russia in sections and re-assembled in St. Petersburg.

"In July 2015 it was reported that the wreck of the Som (Сом) had been located in Swedish waters"

So it's actually a US boat ;D.
