A massive plume of dust from the Sahara Desert has already surged into the Caribbean Sea, and it's expected to reach the Gulf of Mexico and parts of the United States this week.Known as the Saharan Air Layer (SAL), this dry dust plume commonly forms from late spring through early fall and moves into the tropical Atlantic Ocean every three to five days, according to NOAA's Hurricane Research Division (HRD).The densest plume began to emerge off western Africa last weekend and has now traveled over 3,000 miles across the Atlantic Ocean to the eastern Caribbean Sea, covering an area larger than the contiguous United States and western Europe.
You can see in the photo comparison below from Sunday how the dust made for very hazy skies on the eastern Caribbean island of St. Barthelemy.

Why are you including a RU city that has polluted air ( man made ) in a thread about a Saharan dust cloud ?

BTW, when I lived in Cyprus we regularly got 'Saharan' dust and an atmosphere like in your second photo.. If it rains one's car got a coating of fine wet, sand... It's apparently not comfortable for those with breathing disorders and they should stay indoors

Well Mr Moderator...Normally I would put such information in the Climate Change thread. But the Global Warming posts are in Anything Goes...a member only thread.
I now consider such topics [as these] should be available to any random guest---That is... if posts of your ilk haven't run them all off by now.

Information on the news mentioned that this dust storm is the worst in 50 years.

..and ?  The Saharan dust clouds are a natural phenomenon..

WHY include a polluted Russian city ? There's no link in anyway, shape or form ?

I now consider such topics [as these] should be available to any random guest---That is... if posts of your ilk haven't run them all off by now.

Now who's auto-suggesting' ?  What does that even MEAN ?  A poster that might suggest that the current (and much quicker to occur) bout of global warming shouldn't preclude the notion the WE have something to do with it ?

Information on the news mentioned that this dust storm is the worst in 50 years.

Where? The Caribbean, or other parts of the world more used to the phenomenon I posted ?

May be I should start a man-made pollution cities index as I thought this thread was about natural phenomenon ;) ?

Interesting vid, though ((

The dust does not bother me - it brought spectacular sunsets, absolutely spectacular.

What bothers me is a high pressure system stalled over Florida for days.  In the summer such highs normally stall over the Atlantic, with names such as 'Bermuda High.'   The current one is bringing heat, sweltering heat, with no wind.  Did the air stream that brought us the dust, push this High west?  Go home!
