Russian Trolls - Outrageous Responses

I thought it might be comical and fun to find the best troll remarks and post them on the forum:

For those of you who are neophytes, Russia has hired trolls to respond to any news article written in opposition to the current policies of its government.  These comments are supposed to be subtle but are so heavy handed that they are easy to spot.  Reverse comments have risen up that call out the trolls but, since the trolls are on their way to their next article, typically no dialogue ensues.

Here is my favorite Troll Response of the day, written in the Newsweek Article for 'The Ukraine Invasion has Slipped Beyond Putin's Control'.

It was written by Natan Kowalski and is in response to obvious trolling:

"Actually. Our enemies are you. You, who is educated and smart enough to make a difference in your native Russia, but instead whore yourself out for a few hundred rubbles a month spouting propoganda you neither believe nor likely really care about. It's a shame. Russia could be great. People like you could make a difference. Instead, Russia's a shithole and you've chosen to be a whore."

That is the title of an article in which a Russian blogger describes his work in a boiler room that generated pro-kremlin propaganda on various websites:

Russian blogger Marat Burkhard told Radio Free Europe that working in an infamous "troll factory" generating fake internet posts and comments was "Orwellian." "Whatever we're told, that's what we'll write about, no questions asked, and we don't want to know."

... The team of around 300 employees reportedly puts out about 30,000 pro-Kremlin comments a day from fake accounts on Twitter, Facebook and websites like the New York Times.

... he added that the trolling worked: "everyone kind of believes in this truth... it's Orwell."

The Guardian has an interesting article about the organized Russian effort to flood websites with pro-Russian talking points:

Just after 9pm each day, a long line of workers files out of 55 Savushkina Street, a modern four-storey office complex with a small sign outside that reads “Business centre”. Having spent 12 hours in the building, the workers are replaced by another large group, who will work through the night.

The nondescript building has been identified as the headquarters of Russia’s “troll army”, where hundreds of paid bloggers work round the clock to flood Russian internet forums, social networks and the comments sections of western publications with remarks praising the president, Vladimir Putin, and raging at the depravity and injustice of the west.

The details of how this works are interesting. The bloggers are paid in cash and instructed to write personal posts (nothing to do with politics), but they intersperse the pro-Russian talking points they are given among the personal posts.

The trolls used proxy servers in order to hide their location.

According to this blogger he sees how ordinary Russians accept the talking points:

Instructions for the political posts would come in “technical tasks” that the trolls received each morning, while the non-political posts had to be thought up personally.

“The scariest thing is when you talk to your friends and they are repeating the same things you saw in the technical tasks, and you realise that all this is having an effect,” the former worker said.

They've now added departments for people with foreign language and Photoshop skills. Employee turnover is high though. It's hard to get good reliable help that believes in the mission.
