Posting Photos on RWD
« on: May 07, 2007, 09:18:10 AM »
There has been a rash of problems recently arising from posting photos on RWD. The following expands on the RWD Terms of Service to describe the appropriate course of action to posted photos without the person's approval - and to offer suggestions for protection of individual RWD member interests in posting photos (and avatars) in the general forum.

Posting photos of persons without their knowledge (and/or approval):

The RWD Terms of Service includes the following:

Quote
You shall not post any message containing or otherwise use any obscene or offensive language or post anywhere else on or through the International Relations or affiliate site and services any material that is an invitation to fast money making schemes, defamatory, pornographic, racial, abusive or hateful, constitutes junk mail or unauthorized advertising, harassment, invades anyone's privacy, or encourages conduct that would constitute a criminal offense, give rise to civil liability, or otherwise violate any local, state, national, or international law or regulation. You agree to use the services offered by International Relations only for lawful purposes.

Please note, in particular, the language; "shall not post any message...that...invades anyone's privacy,.....or....give rise to civil liability, or otherwise violate any local, state, national, or international law or regulation."

In the case of Trip Reports, we often see photos of people who may, or may not, be aware of photos containing their images being posted at RWD. In the case where someone is aware of the photo and disapproves, they are encouraged to contact RWD and advise of the privacy issue, and the offending photo will be removed promptly.

Please note - RWD will *not* respond to requests/demands to remove photos by proxy. That is, if someone whose image is in the photo wishes that photo's removal, THAT person must make the request/demand to RWD. RWD reserves the right to confirm that ONLY PRINCIPALS AFFECTED are originating the request.

Trip Reports are of great value to others at RWD and the photos naturally bring a 'life' and vitality to the reports which would be diminished without their inclusion.

Please exercise good judgment in your decision to include photos in your Trip Reports, and be sensitive to the feelings of those included in the photos.

Also note, there is a clear distinction between posting photos of people who are known to you and who are included in personal interactions - as contrasted to street scenes of people and sights.

Next - the issue of others copying photos/avatars from RWD and re-posting them elsewhere.

This has not been a big problem, but has the distinct possibility to grow bigger with time. We are checking into numerous technical solutions, but the simplest one remains the one available to us today - and this is, to 'watermark' every photo/avatar that is uploaded to the site.

To watermark a photo is a relatively simple process. I will outline two different processes, starting with the simplest.

RWD already has an automated watermarking process for ALL images uploaded into the Image Gallery. Those images are watermarked with this image . Once the image is loaded into the RWD Gallery, then that image may be included in an RWD post using the "Insert Image" icon .

There are some limitations to this process - particularly when applied to a small avatar image. In that instance, the watermark will sometimes obscure the image itself. This particular watermark is best for images which are between 800 and 100 pixels wide. It will function on images of all sizes/dimensions, but will sometimes be too large or too small for effective display.

Please note - this is NOT the same process as simply uploading an attachment to a posted message.

For those who wish to have more control over the watermark and wish to attach the image to a posted message, one possible solution is to download the software at this URL -- http://www.visualwatermark.com/ (Visual Watermark), and imprint each photo with the following:

* Photo Owner (name and/or email and/or Site Username) - ex. "Dan at RussianWomenDiscussion.com"
* Authorized Website(s) for display of image - ex. "Authorized for publication at RussianWomenDiscussion.com ONLY"
* Disclaimer (optional) - "Image may NOT be posted/distributed/reproduced except as stated."

If you have ANY questions, please post them in the Site Feedback forum.
