We send flowers on birthdays and gifts for New Year's, but all this totals maybe a few hundred dollars per year.

Usually about $300-$400 a month - but nothing is fixed. Had great success with ikobo.  8)

Right.
Also, give her a dictionary and make her read in english-she will need this language if she wants to live here.
I wont make any more comments about a situation, because I dont want to sound rude :-X
What about how much we spend on my family-about $200-250 annually which is for the Christmas presents-and this is a big family. And they send us the presents too. No more expenses except this. They dont need it,thanks God! :rolleyes2:

DKMM, take a look at the Married thread; who comes first spouse or children.  Here the focus is spouse or her family.  Maybe some commonalities.

There is no debate here, spouse comes first before all other family except kids.  My wife knows it and so do I.  Don't people have these kinds of talks before they get married?  We got all expectations out in the open before I made the commitment.  That should be one of the benefits of marrying a foreigner, you should expect to define what your needs are before getting into the lovey dovey part.

I can't even imagine this problem, my MIL would never accept presents from us.  She scolded my wife for sending a care package that included our pictures (probably worth $50 total) for spending her husband's money. I can't even get my wife to spend money on a hair stylist she's so cheap.
