Leather jackets usually are black for men.  Unless all my friends since birth have been mafia.  I do drive the traditional black Russian mafia automobile.

I was always told it was a dirt thing. Maybe more so in the Provincial cities? Even in summer the ash from the Heating and Hot Water plants can be seen along curbs. Ever try wearing white socks in some Russian cities? They get pretty dirty.
Also, the damn Washers in flats suck and even more suck with white clothing :( Ever notice that the Dryers never get wrinkles out like the ones in the West do? Iron required!

kievstar does have a suspiciously large well of knowledge regarding mafias  :P
but he's totally right: black leather are usual for men in the US.  Probably have been since James Dean, if not before.

I think the answer to this question varies..

For example, I have a close girl friend who gained a lot of weight and is more comfortable wearing black, because she thinks it slims her down.
I have a brother who wears black and hey, he even bought dark color contact lenses, because he thinks it makes him look cool.
Then I have my mum, who just cannot find something more colorful for a woman of her age and size.
And then I think of myself growing up and wearing everything black to defy my teachers at school.

Yes, black is a VERY popular color in FSU.

Speaking about the color. I offer another one for you guys: RED (as a hair color). In his three trip to FSU, my husband always wondered about the redheads. Why so many?

odd question. Black and dark color is practical in the autumn/winter when there is dirt and rain everywhere, i see people in Belgium also all wear mostly black/dark in these seasons. In the summer everyone wears very colorful clothes, both in Russia and Belgium.

Does anyone remember the reason that Jonny Cash always wore all black clothes?

Black does fade out when you wash it many times, especially black socks.  However, if you have all the same black socks, it makes it easy to match them up.

Dunno guys, the excuse to wear black to hide dirt is not valid. It's a fact white and black cars tend to show dirt more than any other color. Dirt is not black. Lint and food stains tend to be other colors too. I have to use my lint remover on my black clothes more than any other color. I think browns and tans are good clothes to hide dirt.

I would agree with Aloe the 10-11 months of the year when it is dark and dreary in Belgium they wear black / gray.  But the rare chance they have more than 2 days in a row without rain they bring out the color.

I saw color all over Ukraine.  But how many people on this forum really have spent 30 days in a row in Ukraine or Russia several times within the  same year.  If you have not, how do you know what they wear by season.  Living in a country and visiting is different.

The choice of colors offered in Russian clothing stores, especially for the winter season, is often quite hideous. Therefore, people with taste, when faced with a choice between hideous pink, hideous green, hideous brown, and basic black, may just go for the latter.  When I lived in Russia, I always tried to buy bright colors and reduce the number of black items in my wardrobe, but still sometimes black was the safest choice.
