Earliest we can apply for citizenship for my wife???
« on: February 20, 2010, 01:09:02 PM »
Now that my wife has her 10 year green card, how long until we can apply for her citizenship?    She has been in our country just about six years after comming over on a K-1 visa.   It took a bit over three years here until she had her first green card ie. only a green card holder for two 1 /2 years so far.   Any pointers or suggestions???
Thanks.

About 2.5 years ago.

Permanent residence by marriage states you can apply for naturalization after 3 years of being issued a green card. The 3 years starting with the date on her first Conditional Green Card. As long as she has been married and living with the same US citizen for 3 years.

Go to the USCIS website. It explains it in the section of AOS

But my understanding is that "Anything Goes" does not really mean "anything" if that "anything" violates the TOS.

So she has 1/2 year more until she would have had her three years after green card issue to go to three years which is what we thought.    How hard is the green card application?    Have those of you that submitted it done it yourself or used a lawyer?   Is it that much harder or easier to go through?     Any pointers on the process?    :)

Bruce, I assume you meant "Citizenship" application....  it was simple and straightforward.

We mailed the applications on Nov. 5th, my wife & daughter became naturalized citizens on Feb. 3rd. Your wife
will be offered a Civics booklet with all the answers she needs to know at fingerprint time. There are 100 questions,
and she will have to answer 6 of 10 correctly at her "interview", shortly after which she will receive a date to show
up and take the oath of allegiance.

I know you've had a rough process - take heart - this will be her last contact with USCIS forever.

Good luck,  Vaughn

We are a year and 3 months away from the process.  Actually just getting ready to start on the Removal of Condions here in the next week or so.   I have not done the Citizenshp bit yet but I have looked at what is involved and my wife has looked at the questions they ask.  I don't see any reason you would need a lawyer for it.  Good luck.

Last year my wife did a project for school about the motivations for citizendhip.  It was a fun project and the answers were interesting.  I do think that never having to fool with the USCIS is enough motivation for anyone.  It will be so nice to never have to fill out another form for this.

The citizenship app is fairly simple but you will still need to send the same old documents and have biometrics and passport photos taken.

Took my wife slightly less than 4 years from the date she first entered the US.

I wouldn't use a lawyer unless you need legal advice and. The paperwork is not so complicated.

If i remember correctly----the application "window" open 90 days prior to your GC anniversary date
Nata already has that date circled on the calandar
Experience is what you get when you didn't get what you wanted.
