citizenship for spouse and stepchild

It seems to be normal for the spouse to apply first. My wife got her US citizenshiip in July of 2009. At least I seem to see this a lot, with the wife filing first.
To me it is ironic; my stepson is 19 now, speaks English like a native, but is still a Ukrainian citizen. I am thinking he will decide when the time is right for him. Is it a disadvantage to wait too long? I guess we are not through with USCIS.

Better to apply for citizenship before the renewal of the resident card is due. A $$ logistic.
