Yaroslavl- September 2010
« on: March 03, 2010, 01:26:23 PM »
Hello All!

For the past 4 years, my wife and I have been pretty successful in finding the time and $$ to return to Russia once a year for a 2-week visit. Since we have seen and done virtually everything there is to see and do in her home town of Saratov, we have for the past 3 years spent at least one week in some other city. We've been to St. Pete, Moscow, and last year we went to Kiev.
We are now planning our 2010 trip. Yesterday we received the March issue of Russian Life. There is a great article about the upcoming celebration (in September) of the 1,000th birthday of Yaroslavl- "It's not often that a world city celebrates its millennial birthday!!"

Well, our choice for this year will be Yaroslavl. How amazing to join this 1,000th birthday celebration at the confluence of the Kotorosl and Volga river. The article states that the City is spending 28 billion rubles on renovations and new construction related to the anniversary of Yaroslavl's birthday.

I do not know, of course, any more than than what I have just read but it seems like a once in a lifetime opportunity, and, for us, it is just down the river from Saratov.

Hopefully some of you will find this interesting, and, if procrastinating fora while, maybe decide on a trip (or an extended trip) this September.

Mark

Mark, lot's of beautiful women in and around Yaroslavl.  I'll be going to Yaroslavl this year but it will be in June so I'll miss the September celebration.

Yaroslavl sit's at the top of the Golden Triangle, with Vladmir and Ivanovo at the bottom corners. During the Soviet times this was referred to as the region of brides due to so many women that worked here as part of the textile industry.   This area of Russia is also known as "Old Russia", even older than Moscow.  Many years ago Yaroslavl was Russia's second largest city.

Oh I'm not going to make it to Sochi 4 yrs from now.
I 'm a summertime tourist.
However, based on the Sochi sites  info..they're building away furiously.
