Making the Journey Easier - Finding a Good Interpreter
« on: July 16, 2008, 02:56:01 PM »
Hello to all! I wanted to post this thread hopefully to be of some value to those seeking their future wife in Ukraine. After many trips the past few years to Ukraine & Russia, one will realize that a big factor in having success is in having a good, honest & reliable interpreter that you can trust. Well, finally I have finally found a wonderful young lady that really gives 110% in assisting you on your journey. Her name is Mila (Lyudmila Lobunko), an interpreter from Kharkov (mila-interpreter.com). Her services were excellent and beyond my expectations, and in the end we have also become great friends. After reading many of these forum threads, doing much research, and from my own actual experiences, I know that finding a good interpreter can be difficult. I can give you more details if you wish, just PM or email me and I will be happy to share my experiences in more detail with you. In any case, do your research, or it will cost you in the end... Wishing the best of success to all!

If you focus on finding a good, honest & reliable FSUW that speaks English well, you won't need to spend so much time searching for an interpreter with these qualities.

Communicating through a terp is often more hassle than it's worth. I'll second Scott's advice on one hand and add that it wouldn't hurt to learn a bit (or more) of their language as well. Continuosuly using a terp typically is time consuming, mood wrecking and ultimately expensive.

The sooner you both can find a common language to communicate in the better off you both will be. Perhaps she knows German and so do you. At least then you'll have a language you both might be able to communicate effectively in.

For many guys starting out in this pursuit they need more than just a translator! They need a cultural guide, Russian psychologist, Girl (or Guy) Friday, nanny and someone to cleanse their thoughts before translating them. That last little tidbit is not to scrub out bad words as much as trying to translate their meaning of their words rather than just a word for word translation like many terps do. Not all are this way but many are. They don't take the time to try and understand exactly what the man meant and translate more his sentences than what he was trying to say.

I see a reason to have terps around but the sooner you can find a common language the better off you'll be. A truly good terp is hard to find. A bad terp can easily kill your relationship.
Take time to learn the language. Even a little can go a long ways...

Get off your butt and go! Don't make excuses why you can't do it, find a way to make it work! Always go with a backup plan too!!!

Good points guys, however for all those guys needing an interpreter, as I said, Mila was excellent for me. Now that you mention it, Mila also brought many of the other qualities you state are important to the table as well. Her English is excellent, but just as important her awareness of the American & Ukraininan cultures, and many of the differences between these cultures is also superb. I also agree, it always better to find a woman with a common language, but judging from my own experiences and from many of the post here on RWD, many guys are faced with language & cultural differences. So better said, Mila is someone whose skills & personality truly go beyond the "typical" interpreter, and her prices are very fair. By the way, my present Ukrainian girlfriend speaks good English, and at some point, if our relations continue, I plan on having Mila give her advanced English lessons to improve my girlfriend's English fluency. Anyway, hopefully my post will be helpful to those who do need an interpreter and even more, i.e. a cultural guide, an adviser, etc...
...One other important note, for those guys who are still living in "Agency Model Girl FantasyLand" and perhaps still believe that 15 to 20 year age gaps are common in Ukraine, Mila will give you a reality check, and solid advice to go with it. I used her interpretation services when meeting many women in Kharkov, and thanks to her awareness, many of the women were uncovered as scammers. Mila's services were truly worth every dime!

After the fall of communism, the biggest mistake Boris Yeltsin's regime made was not to disband the KGB altogether. Instead it changed its name to the FSB and, to many observers, morphed into a gangster organisation, eventually headed by master criminal Vladimir Putin. - Gerard Batten
