Skype issue
« on: October 04, 2010, 08:44:34 AM »
Hi everyone,

I've been communicating with a lady who seems quite nice. I just got her phone number and will call her in the next few days.
She is happy to talk but does not want to skype with me. Is that unusual behaviour or should I still pursue her despite her reluctance to communicate this way? She feels uncomfortable to go to a cafe because of people playing games there and no privacy.

Most women, but not all, have a comp at home or a friend who has one. Maybe she is just not ready yet for a face to face? or maybe she is not for real? Talk a bit on the phone and then see if she is willing to go to a visual conversation.

Lanarus,

I have been hearing such things too. Most women which I have been communicating with wanted privacy. Now I kind of like understand a little what the situation in a is

Viking,

You are right! Had that experience as well. Some women are not ready yet but with some gentle persuasion and patience they will eventually want to.

Aussielion,

You have her telephone number. That is a good start! Phone her and see how she reacts on your voice. Here is what I did. I talked to one FSUW on the phone. It was much fun to hear her wonderful voice (deep Russian accent speaking English, got to love it)))). Over time I gently persuaded her to talk on Skype. I had a webcam and she did not have one at that moment. So I suggested to let her see how it works, she could only see me. She got very excited and did not need any persuasion anymore. She bought her own webcam, same brand as the one I have, and we started chatting on the webcam. This is just an example of how it can go, not particularly how it will go. This is what you could do if she has a computer. Hope things turn out well and good luck!  ;)

I seem to have read this before..oh well.

If she is goind to the internet cafe, think of this picture:
A small cafe-like room packed with tables just enough size to hold a PC. On it are 80% students and teenagers playing games, and 15% older guys checking their busness mail.
5% women wil be attracting attention, and guys might walk by their screen to see what they do... not the best environment to talk comfortably.
No it is not a dog. Its really how I look.  ;)

Aussielion..

just curious, is this the same lady or situation you asked about before?

http://www.russianwomendiscussion.com/index.php?topic=12089.msg238083#msg238083

you have  a couple threads over three months on sort of the same subject-
The cab/driver / tranfer or taxi thing from zap to the dnepro airport also..
same girl?  or another in zap?

seems like  a new one if you just got her number ,, ,

the general jest of it seems you are very cautious ,a good thing,
but I wouldn't  over analyze each detail.

not too many women are going to be fond of hitting a internet cafe for skype with a foregner..
(the english sticks out and everyone will gawk)
and no , not everyone has a computer..or feels comfortable routinely using a friends place.

if you have good communication over the phone its natural to progress it to skype or even mail .ru (which had vid chat)

but there are a lot of variables..
those who have skype or home computer would likely quickly move you towards that as well..

some don't, but might use a friends for a one or two times vid chat with you..
it depends on your level of communication already established, and also on the womans comfort level with her english ,(and with you)

if you just got here number, then by all means use it ,and develope things with at least a few calls??

expecteing her to jump to vid chat might be a bit much if you have never spoken or very recently exchanged even emails..
(while other women might initiat it right off ,everyone is different)

You should get a good "feel" about the general situations from your communication,
something posters here can't have, and can only present generalities..

If a person was to go only off the typical generalities , and look at each and red flag  independently ,verses looking at the  overall context of a situation ,  they would never travel..

i'm not saying ignore red flags..
i am saying you can't read each one , you have to read any given sitaution as an overall in this endeavor.

A normal girl isn't likely to Skype with a foreign fiancée sitting in the internet cafe.

AJ and Nat,

Should i then consider myself lucky? I have had at least half the women on internet and then on Skype. Just finished a conversation. Seems also that internet is running slow. Bad Karma for webcam...

if they went to an internet cafe,to vid chat with you,
yeah your probably fairly lucky.
add in *if* they might have limited english ,even more lucky

if they had computers at home ,a good grasp of english ,
then  pretty normal for any correspondence or phone relationship to
naturally progress to that?
:)

it's why i mentioned there are many variables that only aussielion knows at this point.

Some internet cafes are horrible. One that was close to my house was packed full of 10-13 yr old boys playing shooters and screaming so loud, you wouldn't hear yourself think. Imagine the screaming at school for those ages during the break between lessons, multiply the sound by about 20 times (cuz they are dying or pwning other boys playing with them. A 100 lil boys screaming at the top of their lungs. Wonderful surrounding :P
Another cafe i went to was a lot more quiet, cuz they didnt have any games, but in all of them everyone can see what it is you are doing. Talking english can be hard enough if you are alone, let alone surrounded by a 100 people judging your crappy accent and grammar

Aloe!

I feel the migrane approaching… lol
Might be great to pull one on them by beating them in their own game. Ask the teenagers how to play, beat them and maybe they will be quiet… ;)

Your underestimating the magic an accent can have. According to you it is crappy, for me (and maybe others) it was bliss. One woman had such a deep accent she could never loose it, just perfect. I told her about it and it made her blush.

I think you underestimate the difficulty of those games. You can't beat someone who devotes all their free time to playing it. I mean, you can't just hand someone a rifle in real life and expect them to pwn a marine or something, can you? Same in games, people who play it all the time have their muscle memory trained to perfection (yes it takes muscle memory to play games on a keyboard), plus they know the tricks of the game and are a lot more alert than some noob who just started playing and can't even tell from which direction they are being shot at, and what to do.

There is a very different outlook on accents in different countries. In Russia if you speak russian with an accent, generally you get looked at as a second class citizen (unles you are white from a western country of course, but 99.99999999% of people who speak russian with an accent arent "white"). I have not met a single russian person who lived in Russia and liked their accent in a foreign language. It is a point of pride to speak some foreign language without an accent. I hate my own accent, it, what we call, "cuts the ear", as in, such painfully obviously bad pronunciation, that it hurts my own ears haha. Altho multiple americans try to tell me that i speak english without an accent, it is a blatant lie!! (i dont accuse them of lying in their face, i know they are just being nice :P ) According to our phonetist at the university back at home, we dont speak english, we speak garbage. She made it a point to say that every time lol. But she tried to instill british pronunciation in us, i dont like british accent, it sounds weird (thank the movies, im too used to american accent) :P

Hi AJ,

This is a totally different woman. I stopped communicating with that one a while back. Im pretty convinced she was going to play an apartment scheme on me.

This woam makes no such demands on wanting to "share" the responsibilities of my holiday.

Im very happy with her, just was dubious about the skype situation. I just had no perspectives of internet cafes in the ukraine. In Australia, it is all very quiet in these cafes.

Thanks for the peace of mind.

Before I go, please don't hesitate to add me as a friend on VK. More friends the merrier.

My VK name is Roger Bossert. All are welcome.

pwning other boys...Talking english can be hard enough...
Particularly if you use slang which is the result of an originally misspelt word ;D:
Quote
pwned
A corruption of the word "Owned." This originated in an online game called Warcraft, where a map designer misspelled "owned." When the computer beat a player, it was supposed to say, so-and-so "has been owned." Instead, it said, so-and-so "has been pwned." It basically means "to own" or to be dominated by an opponent or situation, especially by some god-like or computer-like force.

Aloe,

I do underestimate the seriousness of games. Never looked at it from that angle. These guys are heavily trained then. I have even heard that they have special competitions where they earn big money.

In high school and college the teachers also taught British English. We were also told to do something about our pronunciation. I do not even dare to say what the teachers called American accent and slang. All kids spoke and like the American way of speaking. I like both accents, have friends from both America and England, thus I do it speak both. I sometimes make mistakes when switching though.  I understand a bit now where you come from.

Sandro43,

I am certainly bookmarking the site. Slang is sometimes so incorporated in the language, I mostly notice when writing that I am using slang.

Yes, while most slang terms are rather ephemeral and confined to spoken language in specific geographical areas, some have had such a long run that they are now a part of 'normal' language in day-to-day usage, like cool (from the hippie 1960s) and guy, the latter probably a NY mob term as popularised in Damon Runyon's short stories, made into a very successful Broadway musical then a movie in 1955 with an all-star cast ;):

I think it's the only movie where Brando staged a singing performance ;D:

Another enjoyable comedy based on a Damon Runyon short story (Madame La Gimp) was Pocketful of Miracles, re-made in 1961 by Frank Capra from his 1933 Lady for a Day and also set in the NY mob scene in Prohibitionist times ;):

In modern computer game developments, terms are going through some evolution.

There for pwned and owned are not synonymous in the game world at this time.
Pwned stands for a single event outcome, like a single battle where the losing party was pwned (lost by considerable difference).
Owned usually has a longer time span, like a series of battles or war. "We pwned you so many times, we totally own you".
No it is not a dog. Its really how I look.  ;)
