Facebook contributes to 1 in 5 American divorces
« on: January 25, 2011, 10:50:48 AM »
Holy chit, I always wondered how many people jumped out of windows because of what they see on facebook.

I think some of this "social networking" is a "social epidemic" being waged on our society.

I don't see much positive out of this new age crap. It takes the human to human element out of life. Not good for a society. Turns people into zombies.

Thoughts?

Are you a facebooker?

Some folks think that the problem is people wasting too much time on internet chat forums.  :whirling:

...and for some, one forum isn't enough.

So true.  I know too many people addicted to Facebook and internet forums that I am afraid they only live "virtual lives".

During the holidays I went to a nice restaurant for dinner with a few friends and we were in one of the smaller dining rooms with maybe only 7 tables.  A group of 8 people came in and 2 couples took a table for 4 and their kids (16-20 ages) took a table next to it for 4.  What really surprised me was that all of the 8 (4+4) was nearly constantly connected to the internet texting...it wasn't just the kids--the parents were just as bad.  Two hour holiday dinner and everybody is texting away and forgetting about the family they are with for over half the time.  Ahhhh.  Modern America. :rolleyes2:

I'm not on facebook and might never join!  As Voyager36 mentioned, I waste enough time on these silly forums...

Now to Facebook and divorce.  In my somewhat small group at work, two coworkers are currently going through divorces after their significant other discovered a long lost love and decided to see if it was still as good as before.  Now for those who think it's something for the younger generation, the ages of the first couple was in the late 40's and with the second couple it's late 50's  :o

Just goes to prove that being faithful for some people is just a matter of not having an opportunity to cheat.

Facebook is akin to a permanent postcard.
Anything posted is there virtually indefinitely.
That is one problem.  One must show extreme care and caution in what one posts.  It can come back to haunt personal and professional life.

A far larger problem is the security risk.
It astounds me how much information people will put online assuming it is somehow harmless.
Posting one's birthday is perhaps the worst possible step.
Providing clues for identity theft is generally unwise.

As far as relationships, it is not only searching for "lost loves," but not thinking rationally about what one posts and whose friend of a friend of a friend may see that and relay it to someone else.  Again, an offhand remark can come back to haunt the poster in ways unforeseen.  Rarely does anyone give it any consideration at all.

When there's a train wreck such as divorce in a relationship, people always tend to blame something or somebody else: the Internet, work, nosy neighbours, soap operas and so on. If they stopped blaming everything around them and tried to take a look at themselves and their own behaviour, may be there would be less divorces.
I use facebook as a system of communication and I have no idea how it can possibly contribute to a divorce. As long as you don't "like" every hot chick and don't publish details of your sex life in your status, I think your marriage is safe.

I agree that personal responsibility is in the end the only thing truly responsible.

But people do overlook what they post on Facebook, viewing it as harmless.  I can vouch that employers search on potential candidates and do indeed judge what they find on Facebook.  I would imagine insecure spouses do the same.  Who knows what they find.

IMO, if facebook is the demise of any marriage, it really wasn't much of a marriage to begin with.

FP,

I would agree as in both of the marriages I mentioned in the earlier post were already in trouble.  So in both cases, FB only facilitated what was probably going to happen anyways (if that's the case then maybe it's not such a bad thing).

Yeah. those are almost the same aversion the Unabomber 'bitched' about.

But I had a Facebook account before. Scrapped it for two reasons.

a) Folks I couldn't care less to correspond with anymore unfortunately didn't exactly share the same feelings I do..
b) I don't have the time to keep it up-to-date....

I can see and understand how people can get hooked on Facebook and Twitter. I am also aware of some loss of privacy. Facebook will never actually 'delete' your account. It is simply on suspended mode once you try to delete it.  :(

Isn't that good? I think it's very good. And it's not Facebook's fault anyway - you can dig the Internet forums and find soooo much about some people, that it's be a real eye-opener ;)

The problem with the Unibomber was not his critique, it was his solution.
