What did Russian/Ukrainians use for diapers pre pampers?
« on: February 16, 2011, 03:33:37 PM »
Was discussing this with my wife and another women. Seems diapers were not used for infants, but rather the entire blanket was changed.

What was/is used for 6 months to 1 year olds?

An old way that western parents also used before modern diapers  :) In Russia we  call it подгузник pod-gooz-nik.

You must be careful with pampers, etc.  The wording is not correct.

For instance, when the pampers say 10-12 pounds . . . . they actually will not hold that much poo poo!!

Usually "10-12 pounds" is a baby's weight that indicates the size of pampers :)

Pampers Baby Dry Diapers, Size 1 (8-14 Lbs)
Pampers Baby Dry Diapers, Size 2 (12-18 Lbs)
Pampers Baby Dry Diapers, Size 3 (16-28 Lbs)
Pampers Baby Dry Diapers, Size 4 (22-37 Lbs)

Cloth dipers were used. They came in just a plain square, as what shown in the photos in the above post, and in shaped ones that were thicker in the center section to hold nore liquids and were easier to use.

They were washed and used again, made out of cotton.

They did not add to the landfill.

The biggest advantage to cloth dipers were that the baby got toilet trained much sooner, because the parent got tired of washing the dipers.

Then why did they not use diapers for infants?

Cloth dipers were used.

And some parents still prefer to use cloth diapers  :)

Cloth diapers were used way back before the "pampers" era. Some years prior to the Great Patriotic War there was a somewhat famous trial of factory collective leaders. They were so far behind Stalin's mandated five year plan production levels that factory leaders lied to inspectors about the number of cloth diapers produced and claimed that millions had been "lost" in the distribution sector. The leaders were brought up on charges and imprisoned.

The big stink: what happened to all that poop since the diapers were "lost" in the system?

One difference did emerge because of chronic shortages...Russian babies were often potty trained much earlier than in the West, usually as soon as the baby began to learn to walk.
