Where is the best source for buy tickets?
« on: March 24, 2011, 05:48:30 AM »
After all these years, I thought I had this figured out. I called my travel guy and he quoted me a price of $1899 per person. I know it's summer, I know it's a certain flight, I know fuel is higher, but that seems a little high. The wife and both kids are going back to Ukraine to stay for a month. They will be there for the birth of her nephew. I think her staying for a month will be good for her. I'm also looking at maybe some options for buddy passes on Delta. If you all have a go to guy that never lest you down as far as buying tickets then do share. Thanks

A Russian friend told me last night that Aeroflot is having a big sale through March. Too late for me  :(

I presume they'd be traveling from Atlanta? Where in Ukraine are they going, and what are the dates of travel? What are the ages of the kids?

As for where to buy tickets--I have used Vayama.com several times and there are other such sites that can also be quite good.

Usually, flights tend to be cheapest on either Tuesdays or Wednesdays, by the way--those are the least-traveled days of the week.

Unfortunately, I know of no single airline or travel site that is consistently cheaper than the others--but some tend to be among the lesser expensive on a consistent basis. The direct airline sites, too, can be quite good. However, that also depends upon your departure and destination points.

As I say, give a little more information and let's see what we can find...

Mother-in-law is traveling on June 15th from Atlanta on Delta Flight 28...I would be needing 2 tickets for G4 and wife, B1 will be doing the lap thing so I know there's some airport taxes involved. I may have her convinced on maybe flying on June 28th with my exchange student that will also be flying into Kiev. We're really flexible on the return. Anywhere from 25- 35 days will be acceptable. It will be tough traveling with 2 kids but it's not something others dont do everyday.

I check pretty much everywhere known every time I travel. So far, the best deals I get have been consistently from a company called Brand New Travel at ticketstokiev.com

One thing I *dislike* about this site is that they require a fax prior to final confirmation (containing your ID, CC used for purchase, and a paper form to be filled out).  Now that I am used to it, the big deal about that aspect has kinda worn off and generally that extra 10-15 minutes work saves about $150 - $200 per ticket in comparison with other sites or agents I've used (one time they were about $400 less - my record "best").

Hmmm, I just went to the site and it appears to have changed since my last purchase (12/2010) and is now listed as GoTravel 123.  Perhaps someone bought them out. The look and functionality of the site appears to be the same but the name is different.  Perhaps they have done away with that fax step as well.  It'd be worth throwing into your comparison and see how they rank.

Greg,

A healthy sign.

:) :) :) :)

By the way, some airlines can not be booked via Orbitz, Expedia, et al.  You must contact them directly via their website.  I do not know the case with airlines flying into Ukraine.  It is the case for Transaero if one is going to Russia.

Since the OP did not say when he is planning for his family to make the trip, just for fun I plugged in a two-week period in June to the site Daveman suggested above. I compared travel between Kyiv and Dallas as well as between Atlanta and Kyiv.

I found it interesting that the Kyiv-Dallas-Kyiv itinerary was over $300 cheaper than the Atlanta-Kyiv-Atlanta one on the same dates.

In the past, I have found that originating in Ukraine was often a bit more expensive than originating in the U.S. I was surprised indeed to find that the longer trip was cheaper in this instance by such a considerable amount ($1022 vs. $1348 or thereabouts).

It still pays to search rather intensively--and some of the European fare competition that has been going on for several weeks ends today, by the way.

A very quick search finds JFK - Kiev at $ 740. There are some really great fares but they might all be gone. Did not have more time to look further. Used May and June as dates.

try these www.bookingbuddy.com and www.glavs.com.  Booking buddy checks many different booking sites at once and Glavs is a Russian speaking travel agency in NYC.  Have had good luck with both.

Thanks Sailor, will do.

However, I really want Chicagoguy's info of $740. The cheapest I have found for similar time frame is $1120.

Yep, just did a search for JKF - KBP  and the "cheapest" was with Aeroflot for $1108.

Just loooked at only one date and found on Aeroflot web page New York to Kiev roundtrip was $ 625. May 26 - June 14.

Other dates may vary but I did not want to spend too much time on this.
