Belarus hotels allow online reservations

Alexander Lukashenko, the man who told German media that he admired Adolf Hitler and wished that the world had more leaders like him, has finally decided to allow the tourism industry in Belarus to modernize.

So over the weekend the government announced that hotels in Belarus are to be linked to international tour operators via internet online reservation systems.

That is quite a step for one of the last Soviet dictatorships. Some hotels have offered limited access for individual tourist reservations online but the government has in the past declared that allowing international tour operators to automatically reserve hotel rooms in Belarus could be misused by groups opposing the government.

The national system which will be monitored by the government, will make online booking possible. The system was designed for Belarus based on the software known as Travel Suite, used in 17 countries worldwide. The system enables online booking via credit card. Payment will be made either directly upon arrival or through prepayment options online.
