Teaching in USA
« on: May 14, 2011, 08:39:30 AM »
Not really all that far along in communication at this point, but a woman I've been doing some Skype with is an English teacher in Ukraine and is wondering about teaching in the USA.  I investigated what it would take for a doctor to practice here in the past, and it was quite complex, requiring fairly extensive study in the USA pretty much regardless of diploma and experience.  Wondering if anyone has an idea about teaching, or whether requirements vary from state to state for certification.  It seems quite important to her, so thought it might be worth posting that question here.

Thanks.

XMan much of that would be determined by what she would teach and where. Chances are she won't be teaching english in the US but, if she has excellent english regardless of her degree she might find a job teaching foreign language in a private school without any further certification. Even some public intermediate or high schools. Most public schools do require at the very least a teaching certificate where many private schools do not. My daughter was offered a job teaching spanish at a private school a year before she received her degree and passed it up to finish college. I think most state universities required certification but many private universities are much more lenient in that regard. Much depends on her ability and the need. Supply and demand thing

Before the massive teacher layoffs this year, it was fairly easy to get a teaching job - any college degree, less than a year of training (about $3000), and passing test: (see middle of page)

We've got a lady that's been here for a number of years from Ukraine. In  Ukraine she was an interpreter for a large company and is certified. When she got here she decided she would like to teach Russian. With the degree she had from a school in Russia in this field all she had to do was go back to college here and get a teaching certificate. If I remember correctly it took her a year to accomplish this and she now teaches ESL at small community college near us.
