Between 1991 and 2010 the GDP of Ukraine doubled from $1,490 to $3002 per person, whilst over the same period the GDP of Slovakia, a country with far less industrial resources grew 6.4 times from $1,490 to $15,906
 
In real terms the Ukrainian economy has retrograded consistently every single year for the past 20 years… there has been no real growth.
 
According to the World Bank
 
78% of the Ukrainian population now live in relative poverty…
that’s 35.5 million people,
 
12.5 million of which now live on less than $3.00 per day…
 
This is on par with many sub Saharan states.

In reality the Ukrainian national psychology coupled with the apparent failure of the public vision of democracy has created a political vacuum that has enable the current president and parliament to come to power and to seek to revive the systems of the former Soviet Union.
 
This too will fail simply because it does not have the backing of the people and many now see emigration as the only alternative.  6.6 million Ukrainians of working age have already left, that’s 14.8% of the available work force and a further 34% have said they would leave if they could.

Any country that is ruled in the interests of a narrow group of people will collapse.

In Ukraine, there is no "brain" left in the country that understands the concept of a nation.  Everything is about self interest.  The interests of the populace have not been included in the intrigues of the ruling class. 

There is a very small middle class, and it's not growing.  There are fabulously wealthy (those who steal), and the rest.  The one and only reason Ukrainians run for political office is access to the goodies.

This breaks my heart.  I had high hopes for Ukraine.   My husband, OTOH, predicted this from the day of the collapse, and always told me I was "hopelessly naive".
