I have read a lot of books on the FSU and have been there several times. A new book I highly recommend is "Putin Country." It covers so many topics going on in Russia, particularly in the Chelyabinsk area.

it used to be nicknamed Tankograd, several ex-employees of mine came from there, a pretty tough region, similar to Pittsburgh in the USA
