New European Credit Card standards
« on: January 15, 2012, 05:56:23 AM »
Guys,
In the lastest Consumer Reports Money Adviser Newsletter, they mentioned that our credit cards may not work in parts of Western Europe. Europe is using a more secure credit card system, the EMV smart card (Europay Mastercard Visa). You will need to contact your credit card company to see if they have upgraded yet to this new system.

Cards with chips are everywhere here now, but the card readers usually have dual chip / magnetic stripe readers so can go both ways.

I would not worry too awful much.. yet..

Must admit how surprised I was to be shopping in the US yesterday with magnetic strips and signatures.

Nice if you got a new pin no. that you left at home, though.   ;)

with the double chip / strip readers, there is a way that merchants can defer to the magnetic strip if the customer doesn't have his pin.

Happened to me.. was surprised this capability exists.
