Ukraine to put best face forward for Euro 2012 . . . Their women that is

For the first time in history, male football fans will actually WANT to be pulled over at the airport and given a thorough pat down while making their way to Euro 2012 this summer.
The staff checking passports at Ukraine's Borispol airport, near Kyiv, are nothing like the stereotypical border guards that one imagines at an Eastern European checkpoint.
Indeed, they are unlike any border guards at any airport - with their manicured nails, perfect make-up and not-a-strand-out-of-place hairstyles.

Hopefully male football fans WILL not be "thoroughly frisked" - when making their way out of EURO 2012 - by Ukraine's male border guards

Believe me, the last impression I got on my first trip to Russia is one that will live with me forever.  I had been given the third degree by a policeman in one city about why my registration dates were not consecutive, and he threatened to have me fined when I left Russia.  When I left I was therefore a bit apprehensive!
 
At Domodedovo (having been greeted by an 8+ when I arrived in the country) I couldn't believe that the official who would have my fate in her hands was a 30-something absolute smokinhotkova who was at least a 9.5 on the same scale!      Anyway, she looked at my passport, then at the registration card, then at me (obviously having seen the gap in the dates) - then she stamped my passport, pushed it back to me and said (in perfect English, but of course in the standard sexy Russian accent) "I hope you enjoyed your stay in Russia."

Their women notwithstanding, Ukraine will fail miserably in this effort of hosting the Euro 2012 event.

No understanding of the importance of comprehensive planning  through execution, too much money stolen from the construction projects, the consistent Russian belief that the Laws of Supply and Demand translate as "steal everything possible since memories are short and people should expect to be screwed anyway".

The people will shrug it off with the usual "Ah well, it's Ukraine." The politicians will blame it on European dislike of Ukraine. The oligarchs will head off for Nice to swill some vodka and count the hundreds of millions of $$$ they stole. And Ukraine will continue to muddle through another decade of selling and reselling properties and infrastructure while continually touting that they are making progress towards EU membership, higher FDI and a chicken in every pot in only another year....or two.....or three.
